Help Disabled Children with Shelter & Care

For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. But most people walk past them without a second glance. “Like this”, Dr. Bhagat explains, “many elders die on the roads.”Since 2003, SHEOWS (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) has rescued over 10,000 elderly people from the streets and given them a home with care and support. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. Dr. Bhagat prioritizes the health of the seniors and ensures that they receive three balanced meals a day based on their precise health requirements. Need for the fundraiserThe humanitarian mission of SHEOWS is making an impact in the area, as more and more people are being rescued and brought to Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. Amar Seva Sangam (ASSA) is a premier Organization in the field of disability management focusing on rural areas across all ages and all disabilities, located in Ayikudy Village, Tenkasi District. Its approach is to establish a centralized resource center in the development of physically and mentally challenged. In the last 40 years ASSA has very successfully implemented several bold and innovative programs and received several State, National, International and other awards. ASSA caters to over 20,000 Persons with Disabilities in over 900 villages in the districts of Tenkasi, Tirunelveli, Tuticorin and Virudhunagar by way of rehabilitation, education, employment and empowerment to enable the PwDs become economically productive citizens and join the mainstream society.About the President &amp; SecretaryPadma Shri S. Ramakrishnan, established Amar Seva Sangam in June 1981 with just 5 rural poor children under a thatched roof. In 1975 Sri Ramakrishnan met with an accident during a Naval recruitment exercise and severely injured his spine and became quadriplegic. The Secretary, CA S. Sankara Raman, also a wheelchair person diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy, a prolific Chartered Accountant with gold medal, joined the Sangam in 1992 after leaving his lucrative practice in Chennai. Their sheer grit and determination was eye opener to many and help poured in from across all sections of society which is a testimony of wherethe Sangam now stands.Their dream is to establish a Valley for the physically challenged in a 30+ acre land at Ayikudy, as a Rehabilitation and Development Centre and developing models for self-help initiatives by integrating the disabled individuals with the society for improved living conditions.Vision of Amar Seva Sangam:To establish a valley for the Disabled, whereby physically / mentally challenged persons live in a pro-active society where equality prevails irrespective of physical, mental, or other challenged with the rest of the society. Institution based Rehabilitation

Our medical testing unit is a complete physiotherapy centre, set up in 1998 with aid from the Government of Japan with a single trained physiotherapist. It acts as a nerve centre and is extensively trusted by families of the physically challenged. This is quite a popular centre where not only the physically challenged, but also other rural population affected with orthopaedic problems, strokes and other neurological issues, come to avail the services offered by Amar Seva Sangam. Initially, due to poor awareness about physiotherapy among people and shortage of equipment, the service users were few. Now there are six qualified physiotherapists and one occupational therapist delivering their services at the centre. Owing to the increased awareness and availability of new advanced exercise and electrotherapy equipment, the number of service users has shot up. 
 1. Institution-based Rehabilitation Amar Seva Sangam has started many initiatives over the years to rehabilitate physically challenged people in a lot of ways. 2. Rehabilitation• Home for physically challenged poor children with free accommodation, food, clothing, medical care, appliances and education• Day-care centre for special-needs children to train them on self-care, hygienic activities and necessary literary skills. Early intervention programs to identify such children at a very young stage and then to rehabilitate them using modern techniques are also being carried out. Their parents are also being trained to help the children after they are discharged.• Calliper making unit to make mobility aids to the needy free of cost.• Medical testing unit to evaluate persons with disabilities, offer physiotherapy services, refer where necessary to specialised hospitals for corrective surgeries• Post-acute care centre for the spinally injured, offering rehabilitation and medical intervention along with vocational training. Spinal cord Injured Post-Acute Care Centre Paraplegia and Quadriplegia patients are provided Post-Acute care like physiotherapy, medical support, nursing and counselling. After ensuring mobility, they are given vocational training for skill development depending on their physical condition and educational background. 3. Education• Running an integrated Nursery, Middle and High school where local needy children, as well as physically challenged children staying at ASSA, are provided with quality education.• Running an exclusive study centre of IGNOU and Alagappa University for higher learning to conduct diploma, degree and postgraduate courses. • Running an institute to conduct diploma programs in rehabilitation.4. Skill development of the disabled through vocational training• Free vocational training for skill development in the areas of Computer operations, Advanced Information Technology, Typewriting, Notebook making and book binding, Tailoring and garment making, Handicrafts, Cell phone servicing, Servicing of home appliances and Soft skill training.5. Village-based rehabilitation• Our activities extend outside our premises too. Mainly, it is in the form of village-based rehabilitation initiatives where we have formed self-help groups and also established Respite centres in villages for daycare of physically and mentally challenged. 
 The expansion of the current facility along with the additional equipment has become very important to provide quality care to the increasing number of patients. We are also focusing on making modern technologies of rehabilitation accessible to the poor rural community and serve a larger population of patients with orthopedical and neurological issues.

Expansion of Medical Testing Unit (MTU)

Interventions promoting child development should address physical, social, emotional, language, and cognitive areas of development. Services targeting these domains of development are termed, “Early Intervention therapy” and can encompass physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language therapy and special education.Early Intervention has a significant impact for children who have delayed development in physical, cognitive, emotional, sensory, behavioral, social and communication domains of development. With quality early intervention services children can reach their potential, live a meaningful life and integrate into their communities. 
 Through our continuous research and development over the past several years we have developed a model called Enabling Inclusion that leverages on technology for the rehabilitation of children with disabilities. The Enabling Inclusion is a pre-programmed rehabilitation app that helps deliver rehabilitation at the doorsteps of the Children with Developmental Delays with high fidelity and quality at 25% of the cost of conventional programs. This has won several national and global awards including the United Nations on two occasions and the State Government of Tamil Nadu has recognised it as an efficient model and we are collaborating with them to reach out to more than 2000 Children with Disabilities in the state of Tamil Nadu. 
 Through our Enabling Inclusion model, we wish to reach 100,000 Children with Disabilities in India by 2030 and have presence in at least 10 states. Our focus will be on children in their early childhood development where the intervention would substantially help the child to overcome challenges and start their life journey in a positive note. We are establishing a separate Center for Excellence in Rehabilitation and Development of Children with Disabilities through which we are scaling the impact of our program by networking with NGOs and governments. Our dream is to see that no children is denied of schooling experience in India because of lack of rehabilitation opportunities. We are planning to scale t0 1500 more Children with Developmental Delays in this year through this initiative. Rehabilitation, technology and training and knowledge building are the three major components of this program.

Early intervention scaling the impact program

a.      Persons with Disabilities are the most marginalized among any marginalized group. Traditionally disability is considered as a result of the individual’s sin and so the individual with disability and their family members have to take the ownership of their situation. b.      Due to the continuous advocacy efforts of Persons with Disabilities at various places and the supporting international guidelines, we have a disability law (RPDA 2016). c.      But Persons with Disabilities and their family members are not aware of their rights due to poor accessibility of infrastructure and information, Understanding about access and rights of Persons with disabilities is very poor among the decision makers in public and private sector. D.    Despite the supporting legal situation, Persons with disabilities are denied of accessibility and       opportunities. 
 Persons with disabilities in rural areas are hard pressed to get themselves protected along with their families. They are not able to go out and caring their disabled persons in the family for a parent is always most challenging particularly in a situation where there is a complete lockdown and nobody is allowed to go outside. Even after the lockdown it is going to be an enormous economic challenge for these families to get back to their regular spending life as they are hard pressed for cash for their daily living. With whatever little money they will be having in their hands they would rather spend it for buying rice, dhal and vegetables rather than spending it for their hand sanitizers or masks. People with disabilities are more susceptible to viruses like covid 19 relative to others. We take “hand washing” as a normal precaution, but pwds face serous limitations to follow this practice frequently. Besides, there is a lack of public toilets for them and then social distancing, but most Pwds depend on others due to physiological constraints and most of the PWDs are largely dependent on the care givers. PwDs face serious barriers in getting jobs. Unequal access to education and training programmes is a major challenge that needs to be resolved a priority. Then they need to be able to learn about and obtain jobs, which they can physically access and work at despite their disability. They also face social and psychological barriers - ignorance, myths, prejudice, stereotyping and misconceptions about their capacities, acceptance by fellow workers, and low self-esteem, fear and over-protective families. 
 The project will address health, awareness, and unemployment and livelihood problems of PWDs during on covid 19. The project will address service required on a daily basis for pwds are suspended. Access to aid and devices for the disabled and recommend the pwds who don’t have disability certificates for will get the government benefits during on lockdown period and that will improve accessibility and encourage to involve the self-business and employment.
