“We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. According to the nonprofit office bearer, “Many parents neglect their blind daughters and at times even sell them off for begging, etc. Even if the girl is from a well-to-do family, they feel providing education and care to a blind girl is a waste of money”. “What is the fault of an innocent child?”, she asks.Education, the only hope “These girls have no future without education. If they don’t receive education, they will remain uncared for. They will continue to be ignored by not just their families but even by society at large. Whatever I am today is only because of the education I received. But sadly, every blind girl is not as fortunate. “The major problem in society today is the stigma against mentally ill or mentally disabled people. Families feed and care for men who are mentally ill and keep them at home. But no one wants to help women with mental illnesses,” says N Vanitha Rengaraj, chairperson of Sharanalayam.Sharanalaym’s ‘Jothi’ is a sanctuary for over 100 women facing mental challenges. We believe deaf children have immense potential; they only need the right opportunities at the right time to emerge as contributing citizens as adults.Started in 2004, Anwesha has been always actively involved in creating an enabling environment for holistic development of children who are deaf or hard of hearing with their parents as equal partners through its early intervention and pre–school programme, counseling, guidance and parents training course, speech, language and grooming support to children. ·       Hearing loss is the most common birth deficit. It is considered a neuro-developmental emergency that needs to be addressed immediately after birth. Unfortunately, due to systemic gaps, universal newborn hearing screening is not an established protocol in our country. According to WHO, about three to four in every 1000 babies are born with hearing loss. It renders deafness as a huge unaddressed burden in our country.·       The effects of hearing loss in a baby are not visible; the baby suffers in silence. The deaf child will not acquire language and speech like a hearing child; communication will be disrupted causing delay in developmental milestones. The impacts of these are isolation, low level of education, livelihood opportunities and self-esteem.·       At the same time deaf children have potential to grow at par with their hearing peers and become productive contributing citizens if they receive appropriate early identification and intervention support.·       Early intervention and pre-school support, designed to prepare a deaf child for regular education through various stages of learning including development of language, communication, literacy, numeracy skills and auditory training can take a deaf child a long way. It is, therefore, important that the child gets introduced to habilitative intervention sooner than later. 
 Anwesha Kolkata has a three-tier approach. We work in a team of parents, special educators, and specialists to provide comprehensive services to meet the individual learning needs of every child.Early Intervention &amp; Pre School Programme: This program is targeted for young children with deafness and also critical to build the foundation for a deaf child. Based on utilizing residual hearing of a deaf child through use of amplification devices, a child develops listening skills, learns language and develops oral communications skills. Our aim is to equip a deaf child with vocabulary and language, literacy and numeracy skills so as to help a child achieve the desired competency for school readiness.Need based education and life skills programme : This programme is aimed to build capacity and confidence among growing deaf children, helping them cope in mainstream education, everyday issues and prepare them for the journey called “life”. Children receive remedial language and educational support, speech therapy, counseling, grooming and life skills.Parents training course helps parents cope with their emotional needs, accept their child, understand parental role and learn about the possibilities of their child, their rights and entitlements. This course helps parents to renew their dreams for their child and take charge of their own lives. 
 We aspire to create more successful role models out of deaf children. The school goers of our initial days have grown into young adults as successful role models in different spheres of education and work life and speak volumes of their abilities over dis-ability.We want to see parents as comforting support for other parents. An experienced parent can offer emotional support, strength, guidance, and linkage to a young parent. Hope and dream for the future of the child are the best comforts that a new parent can have.
