“We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. But no one wants to help women with mental illnesses,” says N Vanitha Rengaraj, chairperson of Sharanalayam.Sharanalaym’s ‘Jothi’ is a sanctuary for over 100 women facing mental challenges. <ul><li>Started in 1992, Arushi is a not-for-profit organization actively engaged in working for people with disabilities and issues related to them. Since its inception, the organization has been making concentrated efforts for the social mainstreaming of people with disabilities. Thus in its pursuit of working as a facilitator in the overall process of development. Arushi strives to achieve objectives like inculcating self-confidence in Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) through education and training, linking them with various developmental schemes, creating a forum to express their concerns and advocate their rights, disseminating information to them on various aspects of rehabilitation, developing a cadre of trained professionals to work with PWDs for their integration, creating awareness in the society to foster a positive attitude towards them and undertaking research-based activities to complement these objectives.</li><li>Several activities are undertaken by Arushi to achieve its goals to provide training for livelihood like computer training, confidence building, and talking book library. Along with these, annual campaigns are organized to spread awareness on disability issues and to promote inclusion. Blind Challenge Car Rally, Ek Taal Ek Saal are the two unique annual events organized by Arushi. Since 2014, Arushi is a registered charity with Mumbai Marathon, organized annually as the biggest charity event.</li><li>Advocating the creation of a barrier-free environment, Arushi also believes in taking more and more people along in its pursuit. It has thus partnered with organizations like Archaeological Survey of India, Indian Railways, Accessible India Campaign, Education, Govt. of M.P., Banks, and Educational Institutions, amongst others, to work towards identified goals and has also motivated them to incorporate accessibility in their new construction and make necessary arrangement in their existing environment for inclusion of PWDs. </li></ul>
