I also lost my eyesight as a child but today I am a senior officer in a public sector company. Arvind Foundation is a charitable organization for special needs children (children with cerebral palsy, Autism, ADHD, ADD, Down's syndrome, muscular dystrophy, mental retardation, epilepsy, hydrocephalus, microcephalus, spina bifida, chromosomal disorder, neurological disorder, dyslexia).Inspired by their son Arvind who is blessed to be a Cerebral Palsy child, Arvind Foundation was started by his parents in 2004 with the aim to help special needs children and their parents from underprivileged backgrounds. Our mission is to enable children, young adults, and adults with special needs to become independent through curative education, therapies, vocational training &amp; livelihood programs. From a humble beginning with 2 special needs children in 2004, today we serve about 140 such children and young adults through our 5 centers in Tamilnadu : KK Nagar - Chennai (2 centers) / Kolappancherry - Poonamallee / Chengelpet / Mannavanur ( Kodaikanal ).

Our society, including the parents of economically underprivileged special needs children lack awareness about mental disabilities. The acceptance of such children in society and in families is low due to lack of awareness. We have noticed that such children also do not receive a balanced diet due to poverty. Lack of education and poverty also hinders the capacity of parents of such children to carry forward the training and education back home. The drive to send or bring such children to our centers is also very low. Therefore, in order to build up awareness, to keep our students healthy and to bring them to our centers and provide them with education, therapies, training and livelihood, we are in need of regular financial support. 
 Our key actions include:-Identify children and young adults with special needs and train them to be independent. -Focus on prevention as part of awareness building, early intervention, rehabilitation, vocational training and provide economic support by creating livelihood opportunities. - To provide curative education to underprivileged special needs children and young adults. - To provide age and capacity specific vocational training to our students - To develop contributory talents like field sports, cultural eventslike dance, stage play etc - To provide training on livelihood projects like kitchen masala products,toiletries, jewelry making, tailoring, gardening (which are also healing and therapeutic); restaurant training in cooking, selling and serving dishes at our internal restaurant – Arvind’s café. - To generate revenue for our young adults through our various livelihood projects 
 1. Changes like independence, acquiring tailoring, cooking, carpentry, gardening, socializing skills, sports, placements in jobs are regular schools are few of our achievements.2. Our students conduct a CAFE program exhibiting their culinary, administrative and social skills through our ARVIND'S CAFE, exclusively organized for them in their Institute.3. Our special needs children regularly participate in special sports activities and win several medals. 4. They make ornaments and sell them for a living.5. Few of our young adults have found jobs with Chennai Corporation &amp; Corrugated factory. They have been trained in telephonic communication and visitor handling.6. We have budding tailors and they have started stitching clothes for their family members.

The special needs young adults at Arvind Foundation make and sell products such as arecanut plates and cups, agarbathis, fancy jewelry, masala powders among others. We sell them at various stalls at corporate events and other public events. We also have opened a store recently to display and sell these products made by them. Now, we are trying to reach out to many more people who will be willing to buy these products. To achieve this we are looking forward to more avenues for the sale of products made by our special needs young adults and provide a livelihood to them. We therefore want to have a ‘store on wheels’ which will be stationed at various areas to sell the products created by our special needs young adults. 
 Our special needs young adults and children are provided with vocational training with the goal of making them independent. We have established Arvind Store in (month 2019) in K K Nagar, Chennai. We also try to reach to more people at every opportunity that presents itself. However, this is not sufficient for us to sell enough to provide the stipend that we promise our special needs young adults. We are trying to make our children as self-sufficient as possible and Arvind Store on Wheels is one of our projects towards reaching that goal. The institution provides them with the requisite skill to take on the challenges that they face with being independent. With the help of vocational skills that they are being trained in, they gain self-confidence and their self-esteem boosts up that ultimately provides them security. 
 The “Arvind Store on Wheels” project will benefit 35 special needs young adults and adolescents for now and will continue to benefit many more as and when our younger children grow up to be adults (we have about 120 children at our centres). Our young adults have undergone necessary training to produce the products that the store on wheels will be selling. The mobility of the store will also enable our children to meet many people and build the confidence in them to interact with others. It is a good source of engagement as repetitive work calms down hyperactive and autistic students. The outcome of the Arvind store on wheel will be a beautiful integration of self-confidence and self-esteem in our special needs young-adults that will ultimately push them to be independent. The store will also become a good source of livelihood in the future for them.

ARVIND STORE ON WHEELS

As special needs children grow up into young adults, their abilities increase and also their restlessness and hyperactivity. They are unable to focus and sustain themselves in specific activities.A healing and rhythmic creative world is what is the need of the hour. The self – satisfaction that they derive from producing things which can be made use of by others and the feeling of being a part of the society gives immense joy to them and helps them to move on further.As they move into adolescence and later into adulthood, the frustration of the family members become more pronounced as their needs are more demanding and behavioral issues crop up and meeting it especially in an under privileged family becomes very difficult. A sustained vocational skill provides them a day-to-day work and to top it all a decent remuneration (stipend) based on their productivity in something which can help them to get settled in life. This method alone can help alleviate the problems that arise out of the adulthood development of special needs people.The ECO-FRIENDLY PAPER PENCIL MAKING PROJECT of Arvind Foundation is thus a unique one which serves as a boon to special needs people. 
 The covid and post covid scenario is very difficult for our underprivileged special needs students ‘s family as many of them are daily wage laborers. With no fixed family income in sight, the parent’s feel the responsibility of the special needs people as burdensome.Enrolling the special needs students in a project that will fetch them a reasonable income will help mitigate the grave situation back home to a certain extent.Arvind Foundation’s dream project ‘PAPER PENCIL MAKING’ aims to target such students who have the ability to do things under guidance and also keep their hyper activeness and restlessness under check.This unique project is not only Eco-friendly (thereby contributing to the wellness of the society) but also a simple and learners friendly one. This project also aims to target self-help group for mothers of special needs students who are not employed anywhere.Raising a team of responsible special needs youth who can find a meaning to their life is the main focus of this project.Hand holding them and taking them step by step to achieve fulfillment is the road to success. 
 The impact that this project will have is something unique.·        It imparts the requisite training in an easy and simple manner.·        Provides stipend to the participants.·        Gives a boost to their confidence·        Helps them to earn respect in the family and society.·        Help in physical fitness and mental alertness. ·        It’s a healing activity which helps calm them down·        They derive immense self-satisfaction and joy·        Identifying themselves as a team of sharing and caring for each other·        Gives them the much-needed focus and attention to a certain extent·         Learning of task completion which will help them in their day-to-day life·        It provides employment opportunities for special needs adults

Arvind's Eco Friendly Pencil Making Unit

Livelihood opportunities for many special needs young adults are minimal and unreachable in spite of acquiring certain skills after years of intervention and training. Safe, conducive and viable projects to use their training for productive livelihood are minimal and inaccessible to many of them.THE ISSUE is linking trained and prepared young adults to sustainable livelihood opportunities through viable projects. 
 As a SOLUTION, we provide such livelihood opportunities through our 3 vocational training projects (Arecanut-leaf products / Masala powder / weaving) and one in the pipeline (Sanitary napkin)45 of our young adults undergo vocational training under these projects and 20 of them earn a stipend under our livelihood scheme. We plan to include another 20 young adults under this livelihood scheme during 2020 - 2021.For this to run successfully, we are in need of uninterrupted supply of raw materials and a dedicated project coordinator.
