This has become a practice in today's society that money comes first and everything else later,” says Winnie whose Maitri India, rescues widowed mothers from the streets of Vrindavan.Many widowed elderly mothers often end up living a lonely life and begging to survive on the streets. “I used to be sexually abused repeatedly, and when I screamed in pain, they hit and threatened me with more violence,” says Priya (name changed), a rescued child sex worker. Priya was abducted by traffickers and sold into a red-light area house before she was rescued by Guria led by Manju. For over two decades, Manju has been rescuing young girls forced into prostitution across the country. She has been shaken to the core seeing some of the most horrifying crimes that young girls have to undergo. “You can’t imagine the state of girls forced into sex work. The girls are given electric shocks and burnt with cigarette butts just to get kicks out of it. And if they get pregnant, the "owners" kick them repeatedly in the womb so that the child inside dies…If you want to see hell, it is here on this planet where young girls are sexually abused,” says Manju.Manju needs your help to rescue more young girls from forced prostitution and reunite them with their families. Donate now.Guria’s work over the yearsBased out of Varanasi, inarguably the holiest place in India, Manju and her organisation Guria, fights the sexual exploitation of girls, especially minors, by taking on the traffickers head-on, and rescuing and rehabilitating them.Started in 1993, Guria has rescued over 5500 persons from slavery, sex trafficking, and child prostitution so far. It has also been instrumental in shutting down hundreds of places that housed trafficked girls and putting scores of traffickers out of business and in jail.For instance, in 2005, a Guria-led rescue operation in Varanasi's red-light area led to the freeing of 49 women and girls, including minors. Many of them were kept against their will. Some of the traffickers were also arrested and tried. Since then, Guria has rescued thousands of young girls.Manju and her husband, Ajeet Singh began rescuing girls from Varanasi’s red-light areas and then working to stop the sex-trafficking of young girls within Uttar Pradesh and outside. The organisation’s aim is to eliminate the sex trafficking of women, especially minor girls, end second-generation prostitution and child prostitution, and rehabilitate women and girls who are rescued from the trade. Manju has faced violent backlash from the traffickers and other vested interests, but it has not deterred her from carrying on rescuing young girls from trafficking. Rescue and rehabilitationBesides rescuing girls trafficked for sex, mostly from low-income families, from across the country, Guria fights on their behalf in courts and also provides education, food, vocational training, and other facilities until they are united with their families. But because of a lack of funds, Guria is finding it difficult to rescue more girls and also take care of them once they are away from the clutches of the traffickers. Take the case of Sameena (name changed), who was abducted from Uttar Pradesh all the way to Telangana. Guria took it upon itself to rescue the girl with the help of its own work and also the authorities. After months of rehabilitation, Sameena went back to her family and even completed her education. A period or menstruation is a natural, biological process of the female body. Unfortunately, it has become a source of suffering and illnesses for women and young girls from poor families as they can’t afford sanitary pads. “Proper menstrual hygiene is every woman’s right but has become a curse for many. No one should be denied this right, and sanitary pads should not be a luxury. ANEW - Association for Non-traditional Employment for Women, based in Anna Nagar, Chennai, is an NGO, founded in the year 1997,committed to the cause of upliftment of underprivileged women, providing free of cost non-traditional skills training and placement. ANEW is a registered, non-governmental, voluntary organization wherein young underprivileged women are selected and trained so that they can become financially independent. We have trained over 14,000 candidates since inception and currently target to train around 1000 candidates per year. Across all our courses, we have been successful in achieving 75-80% placement, consistently over the years. The training courses that we conduct include: Home Nursing (co-certified by Sundaram Medical Foundation), Basic Computer Applications (co-certified by NIIT Foundation), Advanced courses like TALLY &amp; Accounting &amp; Python (also co-certified by NIIT Foundation) &amp; e-Publishing and Autorickshaw/Car driving. Our target group is underprivileged women between the age group of 18 and 35, from govt. funded institutions, who are 100% first-generation literates/graduates, from in and around Chennai. All our courses have mandatory spoken English and counseling classes to improve their scope of employability. Internships are provided whenever there are corporate opportunities available.

The population of our urban underprivileged community is growing in metropolitan cities as rural people migrate for want of better livelihoods and education for children. Due to affordability issues, they tend to live in small tenements with poor hygiene conditions and no access to even the basic needs for a decent quality of life. There is a desperate need for the women of this society to support the family financially. Urban underprivileged women with minimum literacy levels are employed in informal job sectors involving hard manual labour, long working hours and r poor working conditions. There are several non-profit organizations and government funded initiatives training women in women-oriented, traditional job profiles. In 1997, ANEW was started to fulfil the need in society to provide an empowering environment for women which provides them with vocational training and finds employment opportunities in the organized job sector for urban underprivileged women, based on their levels of literacy. First generation literates with basic education lack direction and employability skills. To bridge this gap, all vocational training at ANEW is supported by a lifeskills program to make the beneficiaries career ready. 
 The target group for ANEW’s courses are the urban under-privileged women candidates who are 1st generation literates from corporation / government schools and colleges or young women who are high school dropouts. The project purpose is to provide good quality training, free of cost.Skill training at ANEW targets the educational qualification and personal capabilities of the beneficiaries. All training is supported with spoken English classes and a focused lifeskills and career readiness program to enhance employability.ANEW believes in working closely with all its stakeholders, namely the donors/sponsors, partner organisations, volunteers, teachers, the underprivileged community (students and their parents) which forms our target group, corporates who provide internships and employment and other NGOs with whom we share a symbiotic relationship. Relevant industry partners co-certify our programs. It is this inclusive approach that has helped us in providing the help to the needy, and has led to long term sustenance of our programs. 
 ANEW enhances the socio-economic status of young underprivileged women by empowering them with self-confidence and the required skills to enable them become financially independent and contribute to family and society. ANEW's programs have stayed relevant to market changes since its inception.ANEW has learnt and achieved much in the past 21 years in the cause of empowerment of underprivileged women. ANEW empowers underprivileged women, who find employment in the formal sector, become financially independent and use 100% of it to transform not just their lives but the lives of their families too, by providing them better education and healthcare.When ANEW started in 1997, it was one of the pioneers in identifying the skill vs market requirement gap and providing a solution for it. Since then for the past 21 years, ANEW has successfully trained for employment close to 10,000 women in various fields. It has a robust process starting from the identification of the right candidates to the 3 - 6 months exhaustive training schedule which includes lifeskill and career readiness along with the vocational skill training. ANEW has so far sustained this novel approach and is confident that it will continue to do so in the coming years too.
