This has become a practice in today's society that money comes first and everything else later,” says Winnie whose Maitri India, rescues widowed mothers from the streets of Vrindavan.Many widowed elderly mothers often end up living a lonely life and begging to survive on the streets. “We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. Atma Swabhiman was established in the year 2009 and registered under the societies registration act 21,1860 to address the challenges of people affected by leprosy living in the self-settled colonies.  We focus on helping individuals and families to rise above the stigma associated with leprosy and to live healthy, productive lives through access to education, medical care, livelihoods, and community development. Our work extends to 30+ colonies in Jharkhand reaching 7,000+ individuals.  We work to build the skills and self confidence so that individuals and families can live with dignity in an inclusive society. These include:●       Education support for children to enter government schools and after school support. ●       HealthCare including cleaning and enhancement of hygiene in the colonies and water provision.●       Organizing skills training, livelihood and employment opportunities for youth and women in and outside the colonies.●       Provision of government entitlements, through lobbying and networking, such as: Strengthening and expansion of self-help groups, especially of the women.●        Acceptance of leprosy affected with disabilities, Pension provision, Land Housing provision. Our most recent and impactful programs have been:  I. Community Kitchen, a unique women-led initiative that provides free and low cost meals to vulnerable people, often securing lives in danger due to hunger. The kitchen allows for meals to be provided with care and dignity to excluded individuals who are poor and hungry, without family, single elderly and people with disability, within a leprosy colony - dependent on others for food.In these kitchens, groups of 4 women have come together to set-up the space, find community contribution of utensils, storage units, kitchenware and other required items - followed by cooking, serving and maintaining the kitchens. The units build a sense of participation, responsibility and ownership within the colonies, the nominal cost of the meals also encourages dignity of food, and message of care within the society at the difficult times post Covid pandemic.Three community kitchens help provide food for 200 individuals daily which include leprosy-affected and elderly people at Rs 10/- per meal.II. Continued Medical Care for Leprosy Affected People - Ulcer care program for leprosy affected established in Dhanbad &amp; Jamtara districts also uses volunteers to step up for medical care within the community. 200+ people receive care and training in the management of ulcers and wounds, 350 ulcer care kits distributed at the leprosy colonies of Dhanbad and Bokaro  III. FOUR Bal Panchayats established in four colonies with 200+ children promote leadership, conduct many activities &amp; after-school support for children by children IV. Food banks started in 2 colonies are a simple yet huge source of support within colonies to maintain a storage area with dry rations. Possible quantities of ration donated by the colony members (and any other donors) are collected and utilised when need arises within the community in times of natural calamities, family emergencies or on occasions such as weddings etc.  V. Water Connection was rebuilt at Ballagudda leprosy colony along with the community members building a sense of ownership and dignity.120 People now have access to safe drinking water VI. Covid Relief and Support - We joined hands to support many leprosy colonies during the Covid pandemic. A population of 18,000+, 4,000 families in 43 colonies of Jharkhand reached to provide relief materials. 10 state leaders linked together for relief support covering 300+ colonies. 2,000 nutrition packs distributed to children in slums and leprosy colonies.

Hope is all some people have. For men and women suffering from leprosy in India, feeling a sense of belonging or acceptance is a rare event. They are shunned, treated like animals, and forced to live in the most drastic conditions because of no fault of their own. Atma Swabhiman is the only thing standing between them and complete abandonment. Here are some of our key achievements in FY 24-25 - <ul><li>Provided 25 pairs of footwear to individuals afflicted with leprosy.</li><li>Organized an eye-screening camp and treated 8 visually impaired individuals with leprosy.</li><li>Provided emergency care to 2 individuals with significant leprosy-related injuries by facilitating their hospital visit and covering their medical costs.</li><li>Provided medical care to over 150 individuals affected by leprosy at their doorstep. </li></ul> Leprosy is a terrible disease that is accompanied by massive physical and mental pain. The social exclusion that those suffering from leprosy face only adds to their torment, and without Atma Swabhiman, these poor souls are abandoned and forgotten. Atma Swabhiman requires funds to rebuild the lives of people affected by leprosy, through program interventions such as: a) Mitigating hunger through community kitchen and relief; b) Medical Care/ulcer care for elderly-without family and with a disability; c) Children’s education; d) livelihoods and e) Inclusion of people affected.More immediately, we seek funds for a “Community Kitchen”.Focus:Our focus is on “Rebuilding communities affected by leprosy” and continued reaching out to remote tribal and rural areas in the North East states of India which suffers from development neglect. “Public participation at all levels - school children, college students, company employees is required for social inclusion and help us provide services to persons affected by leprosy, persons with disabilities, and vulnerable communities at the right time. We look forward to supporting from all.  
 Intervention detail: The “Community Kitchen” program will address hunger, and serve poor and vulnerable people affected; without money; single elderly and people with disability in the leprosy colonies; who are dependent on others for food.The women affected by leprosy will be motivated and engaged and will ensure that people affected by leprosy, with disability and single elderly will receive cooked meals throughout the year within and from their own people with dignity. (Generally, people affected by leprosy are not welcomed in dhabas, hotels and food is given to them in their hands instead of utensils. Hence they suffer and find it difficult to get meals with dignity)﻿Actual Need: There are 750+ identified isolated self-settled colonies in India. In many of them, people are living in extreme poverty and vulnerability with dependency on alms and begging. Other than that, as an estimate, India is home to 3+ million people with disability due to leprosy living in colonies, tribal and neglected geographies of India. (Annually, India contributes approx. 60% of the world's new leprosy cases) Note: In the last few years, many of the people affected with leprosy (especially the elderly and with disability) lost their lives due to a lack of food, nutrition and care. Therefore, this intervention is important to secure the lives of people with extreme vulnerabilities. It is difficult to reach out to all the people with vulnerabilities. Therefore, we propose to cover 600 individuals living in 29 self-settled leprosy colonies from Jharkhand state with at least one meal (Lunch) per day throughout the year. Subject to funds/resources availability, we will aim to ensure all three daily meals. 
 <ol><li>Establishing 6 community kitchens to ensure mitigating hunger by providing meals to 600+ vulnerable people affected by leprosy (elderly, with disability and other disowned) </li><li>Support to One Community Kitchen will enable meals every day for 100 to 120 individuals in need and 3,500+ meals monthly (Annually over 42,000 meals will be served in every kitchen).</li><li>Indirectly every community kitchen established will also provide a livelihood to at least four women in leprosy-affected affected colonies.</li><li>We want more let more people affected by leprosy (elderly, with disability and vulnerabilities) lose their lives due to hunger.</li><li>The program will also provide food to wandering children in the colony, whose parents are going out for rag collection or begsingle-parentg single parent children. </li><li>Within the Community Kitchen model, we will promote and establish a Dry Ration Bank with Relief and Supplies (dry ration, medicine, ulcer care kits)along with the community kitchen (*All donations will be kept at a common place and distributed to the most vulnerable with colony inmates consensus managed and operated by the colony committee with the guidance of the Atma team) build the decision-making ability, sense of ownership and care within the community leading to lives with dignity.</li></ol>
