The extent of the struggles here was beyond my imagination. These villages had no connectivity to the outside world, no healthcare, no education, there was absolutely nothing”, says Bipin Dhane founder of the school. Bipin, who grew up in the small town of Satara in Maharashtra, faced countless financial hardships. Despite his struggles, Bipin secured admission to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, and then went on to take up a job in Singapore. This pedagogy reduces teacher dependence and enables collaborative learning among students. Over the past 10 years, we have shown that our students outperform the most expensive after-school programs in the country at less than one-fourth the cost.Inspired to solve the problem of educational inequality and disparity, our founders took the first steps towards fighting this injustice by providing appropriate tools and agency to determined students to help transform their lives. To date, 463 students have been placed in the top 100 colleges in India with the after-school support of Avanti Fellows. Avanti seeks to decrease the educational inequity in India by addressing the systemic bias, which exists against low-income students seeking admission to India’s premier universities. A STEM undergraduate degree leads to a 4-fold increase in daily wages for rural students. STEM graduates are twice as employable as non-STEM undergraduates in well compensated professional jobs. Furthermore, admission into the top 10% of elite colleges leads to a 10-fold increase in wages. However, students from government schools are severely under-represented in India’s top engineering colleges. Students from low-income homes have less than a 1.5% chance of qualifying for the national entrance exam, IIT-JEE making them more than 7-times less likely to gain access to India's top colleges. India’s most marginalized must be represented in the leadership of India’s technology, professional services, and research sectors. Due to the lockdown measures, thousands of students across our country are trying to continue learning as the pandemic disrupted their regular education. Their progress is severely compromised without access to digital devices that would let them keep learning online. 
 Our pedagogical program aims to create a level playing field for students of Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV) aspiring for STEM careers. The JNVs are a system of 638 central residential schools run by Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti, an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Education, for talented students predominantly from rural areas.Our program provides academic support and career guidance needed to be accepted into India’s top STEM programs. Conduct online test preparation programs for high-potential students from disadvantaged backgrounds in rural India for competitive exams to gain admission into India’s premium Engineering and Medical institutes.Due to Covid necessitated school closures, about 7,500 government school students switched to learning via Avanti’s digital content, workbooks with online facilitation via Zoom live classes, WhatsApp-based doubt solving, and live assessments. Avanti’s online learning program covers:<ul><li>3 hours every weekday of online after school training, which will aim to cover ~500 core STEM topics </li><li>2 hours of self-learning / after-class revision and practice assignments each day in line with the materials covered in-class via WhatsApp</li><li>Active engagement with students on doubt solving via calls and over 250 WhatsApp groups </li><li>300 hours each year of audio-video content, worksheets, and assessments </li></ul> 
 The Covid-19 necessitated school closures have suddenly and deeply impacted students and learning patterns. The JNV schools were worse hit due to their residential education system. While the JNVs have been efficient in their teaching process, they lack the infrastructure and bandwidth to address a large audience on online platforms. However, Avanti Fellows continued its efforts towards providing competitive test preparation during this period via live classes on Zoom. The JNV Samiti appreciated our efforts and has requested us to extend this program to other JNV schools.Our core program in 10 schools across 4 states and 1 union territory in early 2020 has now expanded to 211 schools in 17 states and 5 union territories with an overall total of 7,500 students in grades 11 and 12. Our decade-long pedagogical experience coupled with a technology-enabled online learning program in the last six months provides a strong proven model to extend the online facilitation program to 7,500 students to have equitable access to quality subject content. In the program’s 10-year history, 60% of our students have been placed in the top 10% premier institutes in India - the highest acceptance rate of any test-preparation program in the country. In 2020, 62.6% of Avanti’s students qualified for IIT-JEE Main (national average was 27%) and 50.63% qualified IIT-JEE Advanced exam.Avanti Fellows with its other learning programs runs among the largest digital learning initiatives in India for government school students with over 2M monthly active learners.Please note: We are not accepting donations from international donors for this campaign.

Transform the life trajectory of gifted government school students from low-income families

There are ~300,000 seats in the top 15% professional STEM undergraduate programs each year in India. National entrance tests like JEE act as gatekeepers to admission into these colleges. These entrance exams require a strong foundation in advanced Math and Science and are biased towards students who can afford expensive test preparation and study in premium private schools. In-person coaching for competitive exams costs ~ INR 100,000 and online courses cost ~ INR 60,000.Unable to afford test preparation, most students, especially girls from low-income families opt out, or some times forced to drop out of STEM-based careers. Girls from marginalised backgrounds studying in Government Schools are more than 7 times less likely to get admission to top-15% of STEM Courses based on JEE Advanced Statistical Analysis, 2018.Girls continue to be severely underrepresented in the top 15% of STEM colleges.  Girls make up 51% of Science high-school graduates (Source: 2020, Examination Results, MHRD)  but only 30% of the applicants to Engineering colleges as per results published in the JEE Mains 2022 Press Release. Worse still, women who apply are more than 2 times less likely to qualify into the top 15% of STEM courses. 
 Avanti Fellows seeks to create a level playing field for girls in Grades 11 and 12 from low-income communities studying in government schools and aspiring for careers in STEM. Avanti is addressing the Problem through its academic partnership with the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Education running 661 rural residential government schools across India (Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas or JNVs), which hosts academically bright students from rural areas. More than 75% of the students studying in the JNVs are from disadvantaged backgrounds. Avanti is providing ENABLE  Competitive test preparation program and test series across 150+ JNV schools that provide every girl in Grades 11 and 12, access to a low-touch online test preparation program. The Top performing girls in each school also get the opportunity to participate in small group online classes run by Avanti Master teachers every day with a focus on helping them clear the JEE and NEET &amp; gain admission into India’s premium Engineering and Medical institutes and transform their life trajectories.Avanti’s ENABLE Competitive test preparation program and test series would provide the following:<ul><li>3 hours every weekday of online after-school entrance test preparation coaching to girls across 18 states and 4 Union territories</li><li>Instructional videos and learning materials for Math and Science</li><li>Regular practice assignments in line with the materials covered in-class </li><li>Active engagement with students on doubt solving</li><li>300 hours each year of audio-video content, worksheets, and assessments</li></ul> 
 Avanti’s programs have amongst the highest success rates at national competitive exams in India. 35% of all enrolled students qualified for India’s highly competitive entrance examination JEE (Indian Institute of Technology-Joint Entrance Exam) Main 2022, compared to a national average of 4% for government school students and over 61% qualified for the NEET ( National Eligibility cum Entrance Test), compared to a national average of 24% for government school students.Avanti Fellows is seeking funding to enable 100 academically bright girls from low-income families studying in grades 11 and 12 to build pathways to careers in STEM. The program will provide two years of online coaching and mentoring support for India’s highly competitive national &amp; state-level college entrance examinations. The program will run across Maharashtra, Gujarat, Telangana, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Tripura, Assam, Nagaland, Sikkim, Meghalaya and Manipur. Atleast 30% of all participants will secure a position in professional STEM colleges, offering placements with average monthly salaries of INR 25,000, thereby helping transform the cycle of poverty in a single generation.Please note: We are not accepting donations from international donors for this campaign.

Avanti Fellows, is an academic partner to the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS), an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Education. NVS runs 661 rural residential government schools across India (Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas or JNVs). These schools attract the most academically gifted rural students with only 1-2% of all applicants being admitted into the schools in Grade 6. Once admitted, students receive free residential education till Class 12. More than 75% of the students studying in the JNVs are from disadvantaged backgrounds. Bright students from disadvantaged backgrounds choose to study in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya due to high-quality teaching at no cost. Though the teachers are good at teaching CBSE, they are not trained to teach for competitive exams. Students lack access in rural areas and can't afford expensive coaching classes provided in metros.Unable to afford test preparation, most students from low-income families opt out of STEM-based careers. Students from Government Schools are &gt;7x less likely to top 15% of STEM Courses (Source: <a href="https://jeeadv.ac.in/reports/2018.pdf" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" target="_blank">JEE Advanced Statistical Analysis, 2018</a>). In 2022, &lt;10% of all students across JNV system cleared exams like the JEE Mains, which is very low in comparison to the CBSE board performance of students in the JNV system. 
 Avanti’s programs aim to create a level playing field for students from low-income communities studying in government schools and aspiring for careers in STEM by providing them coaching to be accepted into India’s top STEM programs and succeed during their years in college. In addition, Avanti provides intensive career mentorship allowing them to select pathways that match their academic learning level and interests to college courses they have a high chance of qualifying for.Avanti is running three test preparation models across 200 JNV schools. <ul><li>ENABLE: A low-touch online test preparation program. Top-performing students from each school participate in small online group classes run by Avanti master teachers every day with a focus on helping them clear STEM entrance examinations</li><li>Nodal Schools: Avanti places 3-4 teachers in the top-performing JNVs. All students in the school receive in-person instruction for STEM entrance examinations </li><li>Centre of Excellence (COEs): “Magnet” programs where the top performing students in each state/region migrate to a single school and receive special in-person instruction from Avanti master teachers. Unlike the ENABLE and Nodal model, this program focuses on maximising the number of students qualifying for elite colleges like the IITs, NITs and Medical colleges.</li></ul>
