"My son used to kick me when he was in my womb. Why make an issue when he kicked me in my old age?" reasons a very forgiving Shakti Dasi. The widow travelled 2300 kms from Tripura to Vrindavan after her only son violently beat her with a burning plank of wood and broke her knee one evening. She had to leave behind the business she had built with her husband who had died a few years back. Shakti ended up on the streets of Brindavan begging for food and shelter. But when Winnie Singh of Maitri saw Shakti in a frail state in tattered clothes, she brought her to the shelter home where Shakti gets food, care and medicines. What more, with Maitri’s intervention, Shakti reconciled with her son - and daughter-in-law, and now travels home to Tripura twice a year to spend time with her grandchildren. But she is not leaving Maitri, as this has become her family.Not every elderly widow who comes to Vrindavan after being abandoned by her family gets as lucky as Shakti. Many of them often end up living a lonely life and begging to survive on the streets. After being thrown out of their often abandoned by their own children and are forced to beg for food and shelter. “Through Project Jeevan, Maitri houses aging widow mothers in two ashrams in Vrindavan and Radhakund (Mathura), providing them with wellness and well-being. The programme also reaches out to widow mothers beyond the ashrams with fruit, milk and healthcare services,” explains Winnie Singh, co-founder and executive director, Maitri India.Save homeless elderly widows from begging on the streetsMost widows who make their way to Vrindavan are abandoned by their families, often after years of abuse. They come here hoping they will spend the rest of their days in prayer and devotion. But most live in impoverished conditions on the streets and in dingy rooms. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. Gradually more and more mothers started coming to me and asked me to take their children away, even if it was just for a couple of hours,” he further adds.The work that Girish started in his youth gradually grew to become a movement, with many more joining his cause. Puthri's vision, an India, where young girls at the bottom of the socio - economic pyramid are able to rise to their fullest potential by breaking out of the domestic labor economy to graduate into the knowledge economy, thus, eventually being able to contribute directly to the GDP of our country. In a mission to make 10,000 girls career intentional every year, since 2017 we had so far enabled 5000+ girls into an intentional career trajectory however this pandemic has put many of our Puthri scholars` career pursuit in back foot and they are in jeopardy of dropping out of school to support their family financially. This is unprecedented and we need to keep them intact for the path waiting to be unfold vibrantly.  
 Project Puthri during these times, more than ever before, the purpose of Puthri is enormously relevant, very crucial and plays an extremely important role in creating sustainable livelihoods for the underprivileged community that we serve. As a first step, in the month of March, as soon as the first lockdown was announced we ported all of our training programs into their virtual versions with additional elements that allowed more effective mentoring via webinars. Then, we initiated outreach calls to thousands of Puthri scholars across locations and identified all students who have access to smart phones, Govt given laptop and Internet data to receive the Career Intentionality mentoring. Thirdly, we worked very closely with the teachers, Assistant Headmasters/Headmistresses and the Principals themselves to ensure that the school endorsed and supported the virtual delivery of programs, as also ensure attendance for the same 
 For the past 7 months– Project Puthri has had over 70+ virtual mentoring sessions for our beneficiary students, 2 teacher facilitation sessions with 125 participants and over 15 mentor training sessions. During this period, it is only the field of operations that has changed, but the purpose and delivery of Project Puthri remain unchanged.

With a unique Mission to make 10,000 corporation school girl students across Tamil Nadu &amp; Pondicherry ‘Career intentional’ every year, facilitate girl students into tertiary education and ensure they pursue a white-collar job upon graduation. Project Puthri had benefited more than 5000 underprivileged girls studying in more than 62 Government and Government aided schools in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry.This pandemic has put thousands of our Puthri scholars` career pursuit in back foot and they are in jeopardy of dropping out of school to support their family financially. 
 This is unprecedented and we need to keep them intact for the path waiting to be unfold vibrantly. To make this happen we needed your helping hand to support our Puthris with a basic smart phone that would allow them attend virtual school &amp; puthri sessions.	We dont know when &amp; how the 3rd wave would be and schools may get close down the once again. We need to act and equip them with adequate resources. To begin with we want to equip 1000 Puthris as an immediate step 
 We have made a list of the Puthris who requires support and had distributed 100 Tabs in the month of July and would be distributing another 200 Puthris by this month.

Project PUTHRI is India’s first-ever developmental project that seeks to promote career intentionality among underprivileged girl students. Our Vision is an India where young girls at the bottom of the socioeconomic pyramid are able to rise to their fullest potential and contribute directly to the GDP of the country by breaking out of the domestic labour economy into the knowledge economy.The dropout rate at government and Government aided school is alarmingly high. Just one per cent of the girls complete their higher secondary school education, which is the national average. The girls either get into an underpaid job or follow their parents into manual labour. They may also get subjected to child marriage. 
 At project PUTHRI, we follow a holistic approach of providing complete and wholesome education to every PUTHRI scholar. Our various intervention programs in collaboration with partners, help us and enable every PUTHRI to equip herself for a career intentional goal in life.What we provide through Project PUTHRI is as follows:•	Provide attitudinal training to underprivileged girls studying in government-aided/government-run/corporation/non-aided schools which cater to the disadvantaged sections of the society•	These pieces of training are provided by mentors, role models, and career coaches for over a period of 5 years, beginning from class 8th till class 12th The end-goal of this project is three-fold: - 1) To make 10,000 corporation school girls across Tamilnadu &amp; Pondicherry every year, career intentional, 2) Facilitate that they get into tertiary education, 3) Make certain they pursue white-collar jobs upon graduation. Implementation:Hundred girl students from each school are selected to be part of Project PUTHRI. They are called PUTHRI Scholars. These PUTHRI Scholars are exposed to 40 life skills training to build their personality, they are taught to work into different teams to build their interpersonal skills, they are taught to find solutions for practical situations there-by improving their problem solving and decision-making skills. thus they are handheld, inspired and motivated for the period of their critical phase at school. They are taught to be individualistic so that they grow into a career intentional professional. 
 •	The training (delivered through a combination of classroom sessions, games and corporate exposure) will help them understand their capabilities better, prevent drop-outs, build meaningful relationships and develop the necessary skills to be successful in their career.•	This will, in turn, give them an opportunity to reach tertiary education (Graduation) and get into white-collar jobs. •	This will enable them to rise out of poverty and also help their families and future generations.•	We will continue to provide CAREER INTENTIONALITY training till the age of 18 years and later till they complete their graduation. This mentoring will ensure that the girls choose to marry late, getting married to the right person, give birth at a healthy age to healthy children, therefore bringing down infant mortality rates, domestic violence, and sexual abuse.•	Malnutrition is a growing concern in our society. With education and good exposure, these girls will, at a later stage, be able to provide healthy eating habits and consequently contribute significantly, to healthier children. •	Entry into the knowledge economy and white colour jobs will mean that these girls will directly contribute to the increase in GDP of our country, which is expected to grow by an additional 2.9 trillion USD, by 2025, if we achieve Gender Parity.

Many of the girls who can potentially be part of the larger workforce are left out of the mainstream career as they dont pursue / complete their tertiary education. In most cases that loss of education is due to lack of financial support that will take care of their tuition fees. 
 Through Puthri Scholarship Program, our aim is to ensure our Puthri Scholar would not find finance as a obstacle to their career pursuit. 
 With the help of our certified career coaches, we have identified 50 Puthri scholars of the last academic year to be provided with scholarship support.In the previous year some of our Puthri scholars were supported with Scholarship and they are pursuing their 2nd year engineering courses.
