“They insert a candle in the vagina, fingers are inserted (in the vagina) and tortured, and if children don’t relent even then, they put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. “I used to be sexually abused repeatedly, and when I screamed in pain, they hit and threatened me with more violence,” says Priya (name changed), a rescued child sex worker. Priya was abducted by traffickers and sold into a red-light area house before she was rescued by Guria led by Manju. For over two decades, Manju has been rescuing young girls forced into prostitution across the country. She has been shaken to the core seeing some of the most horrifying crimes that young girls have to undergo. “You can’t imagine the state of girls forced into sex work. The girls are given electric shocks and burnt with cigarette butts just to get kicks out of it. And if they get pregnant, the "owners" kick them repeatedly in the womb so that the child inside dies…If you want to see hell, it is here on this planet where young girls are sexually abused,” says Manju.Manju needs your help to rescue more young girls from forced prostitution and reunite them with their families. Donate now.Guria’s work over the yearsBased out of Varanasi, inarguably the holiest place in India, Manju and her organisation Guria, fights the sexual exploitation of girls, especially minors, by taking on the traffickers head-on, and rescuing and rehabilitating them.Started in 1993, Guria has rescued over 5500 persons from slavery, sex trafficking, and child prostitution so far. It has also been instrumental in shutting down hundreds of places that housed trafficked girls and putting scores of traffickers out of business and in jail.For instance, in 2005, a Guria-led rescue operation in Varanasi's red-light area led to the freeing of 49 women and girls, including minors. Many of them were kept against their will. Some of the traffickers were also arrested and tried. Since then, Guria has rescued thousands of young girls.Manju and her husband, Ajeet Singh began rescuing girls from Varanasi’s red-light areas and then working to stop the sex-trafficking of young girls within Uttar Pradesh and outside. The organisation’s aim is to eliminate the sex trafficking of women, especially minor girls, end second-generation prostitution and child prostitution, and rehabilitate women and girls who are rescued from the trade. Manju has faced violent backlash from the traffickers and other vested interests, but it has not deterred her from carrying on rescuing young girls from trafficking. Rescue and rehabilitationBesides rescuing girls trafficked for sex, mostly from low-income families, from across the country, Guria fights on their behalf in courts and also provides education, food, vocational training, and other facilities until they are united with their families. But because of a lack of funds, Guria is finding it difficult to rescue more girls and also take care of them once they are away from the clutches of the traffickers. Take the case of Sameena (name changed), who was abducted from Uttar Pradesh all the way to Telangana. Guria took it upon itself to rescue the girl with the help of its own work and also the authorities. After months of rehabilitation, Sameena went back to her family and even completed her education. In India, more than half of the rural women and young girls are living in poverty with a limited education. Illiteracy and lack of opportunities at village level hinders these women from finding quality jobs to support their families. They are often at risk of being trapped in dehumanizing professions as Kishanganj lies in the human trafficking zone in order to feed their children. This project will empower poor women and girls in rural villages of Kishanganj with valuable sewing skills and a sewing machine so they can earn a respectable living and help their families. 
 Azad India Foundation is working in Kishanganj which is one of the poorest districts of Bihar.The women and girls will attend Azad India Foundation's tailoring center and receive six months of training, where they will develop their sewing skills and learn about basic business practices. Once a woman /girl attains skills from the tailoring program, she will receive her own sewing machine. She will be able to start her own tailoring business from home and earn a daily income that can provide food and basic necessities for the whole family. 
 The project will empower 50 women and girls each year with sewing skills and provide them with a sewing machine to start their own self-sustaining tailoring business. These women will have an opportunity to use their skills to rise out of poverty and work toward a promising future for themselves and their families.The long term impact would help the poor families in living their lives with dignity.They will be able to break the vicious circle of poverty.

Sewing machines to 50 girls from marginalized groups 

Azad India Foundation is working in Kishanganj district of Bihar.The rural economy is dependent on agriculture and livestock rearing.Due to high population density the agriculture is unable to provide the livelihood support for the families.Many rural families are always indebted to local moneylenders and worst affected are the women especially single or widows who do not have any source of the income. 
 Rearing goats is one of the ways to enhance the financial independence for the poor women since goats are easy to raise and maintain. They do not require any particular care also their reproduction rate is higher (8 months) then other animals. They need less space in the home for the up keep. AIF also aims to provide training to the women for goat rearing. 
 Goat rearing will get 25 marginalized women a respectable livelihood that will lead to better life. They will be able to look after their families by selling milk and meat thus breaking the vicious circle of poverty. They will be able to educate their children.In the long run they can avail government loans as well to build their business.
