For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. Bal Asha Trust runs a home for children found abandoned on the streets of Mumbai.  We are in urgent need of your support due to the COVID pandemic and lockdown in the city. We currently have 36 children both boys and girls from few months to 11 years living in the centre in Mahalaxmi, Mumbai.  We have 16 paramedics and caretakers who are living inside the home during the COVID lockdown to take care of children and keep them safe from the virus. We, at Bal Asha, have been facing difficulties since the COVID lockdown came into force in India.  We need funds as due to the lockdown and social distancing as a precaution against COVID our community donations have reduced.  We require funds to ensure we go through this period without any hardships for our projects.  
 We need funds to provide nutrition and medical care (including gloves, masks and hand sanitizers) to our children and caregivers.  We have children with special needs who require continuous medicines and child care support. We need to buy  regular supplies of medicines and medical aid for the children like medical tests, hospital admission charges, conveyances to hospital, optics and OPD charges.  This will now include masks, hand sanitizers and gloves for COVID protection. We need funds to buy groceries, milk, vegetables etc for children's nutritional needs. 
 The funds will help us to run give our children important support during this COVID crisis. As this is a humanitarian crisis which is affecting our vulnerable children living in communities we plan to use part of the funds to give children and families Nutritional Support.

Urgent support to Bal Asha orphange during COVID

More than 12 million destitute children in India. These children are found abandoned by the police in toilets, railway stations, religious places, hospitals and dustbins. These children are often left to mercy of stray animals, insects, anti-social elements and unhygienic conditions. The children are rescued by Police, Citizens, NGOs and are in immediate care and protection. There are also children who are surrendered by their birth parents due to social and medical reasons. The children need shelter, food, medical, education, development, counseling and rehabilitation. 
 Bal Asha Trust gives children love, care, medical attention from the best pediatricians and the required treatment is provided in top hospitals. We have committed team of trained professionals including pediatricians, social workers, para medical, speech &amp; occupational therapist, psychologists, teachers and care takers. We care for healthy children with many others with special needs, physical or mental challenges and those who suffer from conditions like heart issues, CP, Hep. B &amp; HIV etc 
 We believe that every child should grow up in a family and make concerted efforts to reunite runaway missing children with their families across India. Children are placed with loving and caring Adoptive Families through a legal process. The Trust has been successful in placing many physically mentally and medically special needs children in Adoption. Every child deserves quality life while in a home and a chance to socially get integrated in a family by finding a loving forever family. The trust will also create awareness on the issue.

RESCUE AND CARE OF DESTITUTE CHILDREN

Children are extremely vulnerable in any emergency and COVID is a crisis around the world. The financial implications are far more devastating in many families at grassroot level as it affects many areas of their basic survival. This has already impacted the beneficiaries we are serving. We are also gearing up to support many more who will now suffer from the pandemic.Bal Asha Trust’s projects have always been structured to support the most vulnerable children. We have the experience, knowledge and capacity to scale up these programs, if we receive the funds.   
 Financial implication of COVID will hamper the future of Education of children. Food and shelter are usually the priority in families which are from a low income group. The children, if not provided finances for their school fees and educational expenses might miss out on their Education in their prime years.We support more than 40 children on a yearly basis for education. We will be supporting more children this year, so that education of these children is not halted by COVID19. 
 It costs Rs. 6,000/- to support one child for Education for one year. We plan to support children to complete their education so that they can take care of themselves and their families in future.

Fund Education of a Child

There are many families who are homeless in Mumbai. Many are going hungry due to lockdown. There are many children too living on the streets with their families. These families who are daily wage earners, domestic helps, hawkers and people do small jobs, but due to lockdown all of them have lost jobs or livelihood. They are in urgent need of food for their families. The extended lockdown has caused severe difficulty to these families. 
 Bal Asha Trust is supporting the homeless by serving them hot meals every day. We are serving meals to more than 200 individuals. We plan to support these families with ration, essential and safety kits. These families are affected by economic difficulties caused by COVID19 pandemic. We are supporting these families through ration, basic essentials and safety kit.  We are supporting these families through the provision of ration, basic essentials and protection kits (masks and hand sanitizers).Each kit will include items such as:Food items like: Rice (5 kg), Wheat Flour (5 kg), Tur Dal (500 gms), Moong Dal (1 kg), Chaana Dal (500 gms) Cooking Oil (1 litres), Salt (1 kg), Sugar (1 kg), Turmeric Powder - (100 gms)<ul><li>Coriander Powder – (100gms), Chilly Powder (100 gms), Mustard Seeds – 100 gms, Mix Masala – 50 gms, Poha – 500 gms, Tea Powder – 100 gms</li></ul>The contents of the kits will suffice for a family of 4 persons for a period of about 21 days.The funds will be utilized towards Bal Asha Trust’s initiative of providing vulnerable families with cooked meals, Ration kits, Essentials and safety kits. 
 During the last few months Bal Asha Trust has already distributed 578 kits reaching out to more than 2500 families. We wish to provide families with cooked meals and ration kits in the coming months due to extended pandemic.
