Research has shown that over 2 million children, living on the streets of India, live a life deprived of the most basic rights and in appalling poverty. Of these, 80% of these children, have no form of a legal identity document, denying them access to social entitlements initiated by the State and Central Government such as free and compulsory education, health insurance and skill development. As a consequence of these alarming statistics, more than 69% of children on the streets are working and 80% of their earnings are spent on buying food.With the exception of the National Census conducted every 10 years, children in street situations find no place in national-level policies, laws, programs, and budgetary allocations. Instead, children in street situations are covered, in India, under the category of vulnerable groups in need of care and protection. Haphazard urbanization in India has completely overlooked the basic needs of children in street situations, including education, health, nutrition, shelter, food, and safeguards from child labor.The lack of convergence and coordination between various government departments also plays a crucial role in the inability to access social protection schemes established for the marginalized and children in need of care and protection. 
 Save the Children India will:<ol><li>Initiate mapping exercises to identify and list children living in street situations in 10 cities.</li><li>Link children in street situations with an identity document</li><li>Facilitate linkages for children in street situations by linking them with various Government and social protection schemes such as enrolment in Anganwadi Centres, enrolment in formal schools, linking children with health services and skill development, facilitating in the opening of bank accounts.</li><li>Strengthen inter-stakeholder capacity and government child protection mechanisms to ensure the care and protection of children in street situations.</li><li>Equip transit homes with child-friendly elements in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh (one per city) as a model of care and protection services for children in street conditions for the government to adopt and scale-up.</li></ol> 
 Impact:<ol><li>﻿An Education - Without an identity document, children are not able to enrol in government schools. This will change as those below 16yrs will be mainstreamed into formal education. The intervention will also train relevant partners on how to address the needs of the marginalized children who now have access to government schools, and monitor the provision of special training such that the children who have never accessed school can catch up.</li><li>Healthcare – Children will now be able to access health insurance schemes which will in turn throw open the whole range of healthcare services</li><li>Financial Inclusion – The provision of opening a bank account for those above the age of 10 years would become a reality, leading to financial inclusion and the practice of saving.</li><li>Employment and Upskilling – Children will have access to government schemes that ensure upskilling of youth as well as employment opportunities, thereby a life off the street.</li></ol>

She is undertaking the ‘Sandhakphu-Phalut’ expedition [11 to 19 March 2022] – an uphill trek in the Himalayas, spanning 80 kilometers in 9 days amidst thin air (low oxygen level), cold snowy conditions, surviving with only basic amenities, staying in tents/tea houses) and moving in sub-zero temperatures. Her trek will be organised and managed by TREKMUNK one of India’s popular, experienced , safety-abiding and eco-friendly trekking company.

Impact Aman Kumar is a resident of Puso village, 12 km from the Sisai block of Gumla district of Jharkhand. He is enrolled at Anganwadi Centre in the village, which lacked proper infrastructure, and pre-school activities were rarely conducted. However, with regular interaction, orientation and consistent handholding support by the project staff to the Anganwadi worker, the situation began to improve but with the sudden imposition of nationwide lockdown in the month of March 2020 due to COVID-19, the process of learning for the children at anganwadi centre came to standstill. Hence, project team had to re-strategize the project in line with COVID-19 by promoting home based learning through creation of learning corner using local resources at home followed by orientation of parents to continue engaging with children at their homes. These orientations were conducted using blended methods by regular phone call and via home visits. Aman's mother used to turn up for all of the orientations and participate in the activities with enthusiasm. The project team also urged Aman's mother to set up a learning corner at home in order to keep learning continuity. The learning corner featured artwork created by the children, such as drawings, clay work, and other crafts, all of which added to the children's learning, and parents were encouraged to participate in their children's activities. Aman now has a new learning opportunity thanks to this learning corner. Aman could only recognize a few alphabets in Hindi before, but now he is combining them to form words, he can also draw or write with a pencil or chalk.His mother noticed this gradual improvement in Aman, and she decided to keep the learning corner updated throughout with the help of project team in line with the development domains. His two older sisters also helped Aman create new things and display it in the corner. Aman's mother also inspired other mothers in the locality to establish learning corners in their homes so that the learning process of the children does not stop. Ms. Deepti Kumari, Aman's mother appreciated the initiative and quoted "The learning corner developed at home to ensure that Aman learns proved to be a boon for Aman's educational journey. Aman was ocuppied in learning different things in his corner. The Anganwadi Worker and the project team from Save the Children India continuously were in touch through regular phone calls and also visited my home even in difficult situations whenever feasible to encourage Aman to do new activities." About The Program Save The Children's Back to Basics project aims at improving quality and continuity in a child's experiences as they transition from early childhood care and education into the primary grade. This is being done by developing an ecosystem where continuum in educational experiences of children is prioritised at state programme and policy level. All the relevant stakeholders are targetted in Anganwadi Centres, schools, homes, and communities who enable each child to start early and complete their foundation learning. Efforts are being made to reach the most marginalised children (boys and girls) from diverse needs and backgrounds in Anganwadi Centres, schools and communities. This project envisages to empower boys and girls by creating a learning environment where all boys and girls feel valued and will have equal access to quality learning.Your monthly contribution of Rs.2920/- would support 5 children in their early educational journey and strenghthen the foundational skills. Skill Building of Grass Root level NGO's

The state of Assam has received more than 60% surplus rainfall in the pre-monsoon season starting from last week of April till date. This has led to massive inundation of low lying areas, breaches in the embankments of rivers due to swell in water levels, River bank erosion and landslides. One major part of the state in the south –east corners called Barak Valley remain cut off from rest of the state since 12th May 2022 as highways are blocked by sludge from landslides and in some places being washed away and Railways lines are snapped. Continuous rains in almost all parts of the state is making it difficult to restore surface connection with the Barak Valley. Army and Paramilitary have been deployed on search and rescue mission and air dropping of essential supplies by the State Govt. is going on. As of 20th May 2022, 29 out of the 33 districts of the state are affected by flood affecting more than 8 lakh people.  
 During the immediate response, the priority sectors are Hygiene, Shelter, Education and Child Friendly Spaces. Save the Children will initiate the response intervention in the relief camps with protection and hygiene essentials and will continue with other sectoral interventions as people start getting back to their homes.o  Shelter- Flood waters had washed away or caused damage to houses of the hundreds of the affected families. Many have taken shelter in temporary relief camps run by the district administration or run by the community themselves. With immediate input of shelter materials, we plan to improve the coping capacity of the affected people.o  Hygiene Kits- Poor hygiene, especially when in relief centres can result on outbreak of diseases. Even when people return to their houses, the poor sanitation conditions can lead to future health hazards. Therefore, we plan to provide Hygiene kits which has materials, that can help proper maintenance of personal hygiene.o  Child Protection- We create designated safe places for children with play and recreational materials as well as local volunteers as animators to look after the children in a Child friendly Space (CFS). It also acts as an informal education continuity and provide psychosocial support to children in increasing their cooping capacity to the trauma and stress caused by the floods.o  Education- We plan to distribute Education kits to the children of the most affected households to bridge the gap and compensate for their loss of school supplies. 
 Immediate life-saving and life-sustaining humanitarian assistance and protection to children, their families and communities impacted by the floods in Assam.

As India battled the onslaught of the Covid-19 pandemic, children fought yet another battle on a different front. They put up a fight against the “silent pandemic” which struck their lives due to the closure of schools. As many as 247 million children enrolled in elementary and secondary schools in India were impacted by extended school closures. School closures threatened to rob children of a childhood of learning, putting them at risk of Child Labour, Child Trafficking, Child Marriage, and Child Exploitation. Education is the single biggest tool that can empower children, give them a meaningful childhood and prepare them for a dignified life when they grow up into adults. In several parts of India, Save the Children has been working relentlessly to support the education of underprivileged children. 
 In collaboration with veteran cyclist Gagan Khosla, we will be raising funds to support children’s education.

Over the last 14 years, lakhs of children have benefitted through their work as they brought them into the fold of education, while reaching over 1.3 lakh children in 2021 alone. COVID has had a lasting impact on many families. In some cases, entire families have been wiped out, in others the sole breadwinner is dead, while in others, children have been left orphaned with both the parents succumbing to COVID. As per National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, close to 1800 children (163 children lost both parents) lost their parents either father or mother and leading a life with less access to fulfill their essential interest, entitlements, and rights. In rural pockets the situation is grim, relatives are quite ignorant on where to get death certificate, what the process of registration is, and how to avail the benefits and where to go for entitlements etc. Many schemes of Union &amp; State government introduced and implemented aiming to benefit those orphaned due to Covid-19, however support of community, Ccommunity Organisations &amp; NGOs is perhaps at low ebb, that needs to be magnified by media sensitization and engagement .India is a signatory to the convention on the rights of child therefore the country has obligation to take care of COVID-19 orphans and the project will foster various stakeholders’ commitment and concerted action to safeguard the covid-19 orphans especially of the vulnerable and marginalized community. 
 Strengthen accountability of the care givers, family members, Community Based Organization, media to ensure the entitlements and rights to 1800 Covid-19 orphan children to inspire accountability from Government that promotes dignified &amp; respectful childhoodACTIVITIES1.     WORKSHOP FOR MEDIA SENSITISATION &amp; ENGAGEMENT – Media will be sensitised on the entitlement and rights of the children with focus on covid-19 orphans. 30 nos. of media people of local, regional &amp; national print and electronic media will receive correct inputs on rights of children and sensitize with support of the output of the community score card on the ground realities and expected they highlight regular feature stories and article that generate awareness among stakeholders and ensure community partnership.  2.  COMMUNITY SCORE CARD- Community Score Card will be administered in two Blocks with community participation to generate empirical data for evidence-based advocacy to make system accountable for safeguarding interest, entitlements, and rights of the children.3.  ADVOCACY KITS FOR PRI &amp; ELECTED REPRESENTATIVES- facilitating the process for rational action plan for 1800 covid-19 orphans in the state in parting with Government, Development Partners, CSOs and Community representatives for respectful childhood &amp; to protect their rights and entitlements furthering wider scale advocacy at regional and National end.Impact (What is the impact that you wish to create? - Max 200 words)1) Empowered media personnel will have better insights and knowledge on child rights, highlight the issues positively that affecting the life &amp; livings of the orphan children that creates wider spaces for meeting children needs and issues.2) About 200 key /influential change makers at community end will be available with knowledge on various granted child rights.
