Recently We have seen a huge crowd of migrant labourers walk on the roads during the national wide lockdown due to the covid19. One can imagine how terrific situation when labourer including their children has to walk for 500 km to reach their villages. Even they live in a very congested area in cities like Dharavi, which become a hotspot of spreading corona. When we try to find the root cause, unemployment in the rural area is one of the main reason which leads them to migrate to the city area. Nowadays, Unemployment and Urbanization are two major burning issues in India. Rural people migrate to the urban areas in search of livelihood and Due to massive migration, people suffer a lot of other problems like Overpopulation, pollution, Health Problems, Cleanliness &amp; hygiene, Traffic problems, Water scarcity and increasing slums etc.Traditionally Rural people always have some skills but do not have formal education, resources, business or management skill so unable to run their small business, unable to understand market demands and due to that getting failure in their small business and leave the traditional work. Those who fail in their business, start migrating to city areas, live in slums and work as a labourer in factories. Due to the migration, Rural tradition and culture have vanished. And also their children do not get a proper education. If Rural people get the livelihood at the local level, they do not need to migrate and it helps to overcome all these problems.

Due to the lack of education, resources, business management and design skills, the majority of artisans are not able to run their own business. And That’s why we have started the project- Kaarigar Clinic to support the artisans to develop their own business and business ecosystem.“ Kaarigar clinic” is a Rural Business Clinic, where rural artisan can come to diagnose their business problems. We work with talented artisans who are very keen to develop/strengthen their own traditional business, but unable to do that due to lack of education, resources, business and management skill. At Kaarigar clinic we diagnose their strength, weakness and potentiality to run the business. We figure out their USP’s and continuously help them to develop a strong and sustainable business model. So that they can generate livelihood for themselves, their families and other co-working artisans while preserving traditional arts and culture. Kaarigar Clinic helps rural artisans to strengthen traditional business, so that that they do not need to migrate to urban areas for work. 
 We want to develop micro entrepreneurs among rural artisans community, who can generate livelihood not only for themselves but also for the co-working artisans. We also encourage artisans to promote locals by using local technique, material and resources, which strengthen the local rural economy. The overall impact would be, No one should leave the village in search of livelihood. Each of Our artisan entrepreneurs is able to generate livelihood for at least 100 people in their village. Under the Kaarigar clinic project, we wish to develop 1000 artisans entrepreneurs in rural India, who will provide a livelihood to more than 1,00,000 families.

Upholding the Gandhian Philosophy of Rural Development, Kaarigar Clinic was founded by Nilesh Priyadarshi in 2016 as a Rural Business Clinic. They work with artisans to overcome challenges related to growing traditional craft practices into self-sustaining businesses for the contemporary market.Over the past few years, Kaarigar Clinic, a livelihood project of Banyan Tree Foundation has been working with the sole purpose of strengthening village economies in order to overcome deep-rooted issues related to rapid Urbanization and Unemployment.Due to the uncontrollable migration of rural people in search of livelihood, local economies are suffering and many traditional craft skills are on the brink of extinction. Vision : Develop micro entrepreneurs among kaarigar communities to create sustainable livelihood and strengthen their social and economic status, and empower them to make villages a better place to work, earn and live.Mission :Create strong and sustainable business for Kaarigars, who are very keen to develop their own business but unable to do so due to lack education, resources, business, management and design skill.Goal :Develop 1000 kaarigar entrepreneurs across rural India and create livelihood for 1,00,000 families.
