For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. By then, Preeti had spent years of hardship as a homeless person. When Ashadeep found Preeti, she was malnourished and was diagnosed with severe mental illness. After undergoing years of medical treatment and therapy at Ashadeep, Preeti has seen substantial recovery. She feels glad to have finally found a safe home.Dr Anjana Goswami along with her husband Mukul, started Ashadeep Day Rehabilitation Centre four decades back and since then, the couple have rescued over 1,200 mentally ill homeless from the streets. The fate of women is even worse. Without a safe shelter, they are subjected to constant sexual abuse on the streets,” shares Dr Anjana while shedding light on the extreme difficulties faced by homeless mentally ill patients. They have been rescuing the homeless from the streets and giving them a safe home for decades now.A beacon of hope for mentally ill homeless"Our main objective is to provide the best treatment and psychiatric care to those we rescue so they can live active lives. We enable our residents to live a life of dignity through medication and different therapies. We also try to find the families of those patients who have lost their way home and reunite them with their loved ones. The Community Mental Health and Development (CMHD) approach was developed in consultation with all the key stakeholders to work in the community with peoplw with mental illness towards their re-integration. It's a comprehensive strategy to address mental health, economic empowerment, social inclusion and human rights aspects within their own communities involving all the related commununity and government stakeholders. It empowers and builds stakeholders capacities and also involves research in relevant areas to advocate for their own entitlements and rights.  BNI’s strategy in implementation of CMHD programs: •	BNI, along with its partner CBO, holds consultation meetings with the stakeholders including local community representatives, PWMI, their families, and the field workers. The discussions form the basis for evolving a relevant and meaningful CMHD intervention. •	BNI initiates activities that give the PWMI access to medical and psychosocial care and also focuses on their inclusion and economic rehabilitation.  •	BNI offers intensive field support to the partner CBOs, and offers specially designed training modules to facilitate an efficient implementation of the CMHD program. BNI also builds capacities of various community groups too like the Health workers, Teachers, Police, Faith Healers, Panchayat officials, Self Help Group Leaders etc., who are critical to the success of the rehabilitation and reintegration of PWMI. •	BNI has evolved systems of review and feedback, to maintain quality of programs and optimum utilisation of resources. •	As the program matures, BNI promotes the stakeholder groups to independently and actively engage in addressing their entitlements and rights issues with the public provider system and in the community moving towards sustainability and continuity of services.
