Heart disease in children is a common problem, much more common than generally perceived. In India, one out of every 100 children has a heart disease at birth. The heart ailments in children can be anything from a hole in the heart or a narrow valve or even an abnormal connection of vessels with chambers. There may be multiple co-existing problems in the same baby. A baby with heart disease at birth (congenital heart defect, CHD) may fall ill immediately after birth or show signs and symptoms of the CHD as she/he grows. The CHD may be immediately life-threatening or may present itself as repeated pneumonia. The good news is that if a CHD is detected and treated on time, the baby will recover well and have a normal life. Detection of CHD requires careful questioning of parents to elicit the symptoms followed by a thorough examination of the baby. However, the only sure way to tell is to perform an echo-cardiogram test (sonography of the heart). India has lagged in treating CHDs with a current deficit of many thousand children not getting operated each year because of multiple reasons. The chief reasons are lack of facilities for treatment and lack of funds with the affected families. 
 Over the years we have received many requests to fund children with congenital heart defects, and due to a lack of awareness, deficiency of funds from government and hospital facilities, these children were not being treated. The Foundation has been getting children with CHDs operated at the super-specialty chain of hospitals across the country since early 2013. The Foundation collaborates with other not-for-profit organizations which have a network at the block/taluka level, in order to detect patients affected by CHD. The Foundation has held CHD detection camps in various parts of India for the past two years, and over 1000 children have been screened. Treating CHD is a challenge, as an operation is the only way forward. A super specialized center is required for success. 
 As of March 2018, 1466 surgeries have been completed under the Little Hearts Program.Early detection of CHD is crucial for us to save more lives. Early detection is possible by screening newborns and infants (till the age of one year) using a few simple tools like pulse oximetry check, breastfeeding pattern, weight gain charting and a questionnaire about the number of cough-cold episodes.
