Why is an emergency hospital needed in Kinwat?The present scenario in Kinwat area is as under:•	Population in and around Kinwat: 3 Lakh•	The literacy rate of this area: 35 %•	Crude birth rate: 20.9 per 1000 •	Crude death rate: 7.5 per 1000•	Infant mortality rate: 48 per 1000.•	Tribal population: 45 %•	Nomadic tribes: 40%There are three rural hospitals and 15 primary health centres in Kinwat and Mahur taluka, but there is hardly any doctor available. 70% posts of specialist doctors and nurses, including that of the superintendent, are vacant. In Mandavi, where four doctors and eight nurses supposed to be posted, only one doctor and one nurse are available now. These Primary Health Centers are manned by BAMS doctors, who cannot treat emergencies. There is no availability of modern life-saving facilities also. On an average two patients, a day dies due to lack of medical facilities. As a result, a huge number of cases, as high as 487 in 2016, and 623 in 2017 were referred to various hospitals outside Kinwat. These cases range from simple food poisoning to serious accidents. This pretty much proves the urgency of the need for an emergency hospital here. 2.	Geographic situation prone to diseases:The total population of Kinwat taluka is nearly 3 lakhs. The Kinwat village itself has a large population of 30,000. The nearest city, Nanded is 150 km away, and another city Yawatmal is 145 km away from Kinwat. There is no national highway nearby. The nearest airport is Nagpur, which is 300 km away. It is a tribal area situated in a deep forest. Doctors are not ready to visit this area because of its proneness to anti-social intrusions. It is surrounded by Telangana of Andhra Pradesh on one side and river Painganga on the other. Most of the region gets flooded every year. Being a tribal and hilly region, the cases of cerebral malaria, high-grade fever, sun-stroke, asthma, pneumonia and borne diseases due to flood is very high, in addition to Myocardial infarction eclampsia, obstructed labour, acute appendicitis, acute abdomen, accidental injuries etc. City hospital is more than 145 km away from Kinwat. Therefore, facilities of Emergency treatment is absolutely necessary at Kinwat, to avoid delay in treatment..3.	Social Condition and illiteracy:It is predominantly inhabited by tribals (kolam, Gond, Andh, and Pradhan) and nomads. They are illiterate and still believe in superstition, witchcraft, black magic, sorcery, occult, age-old customs, taboos, traditions, apathy etc. They let a woman die at home but don’t allow a male doctor to do her health check-up. Convulsions in cerebral malaria are attributed to a God named Fersopan. It is believed that the god Fersopan has possessed the person. Instead of going to the doctor they go to the exorcist to treat the patient. They sacrifice goats &amp; cocks to get relief.Due to ignorance, they are quite often unaware of an existing medical issue. They still believe in the unprofessional method to treating ailments: like in case of stomach-ache, they go for oil massage on the stomach which leads to peritonitis as oil massage spreads the ache all over.Quacks, mediocre doctors, so-called educated people and government servants have exploited the ignorant tribals for ages. The tribals have many dreadful experiences of mediocre doctors who are giving them stitches without anaesthesia or unnecessary saline. Patients have to endure severe pain in such a situation without anaesthesia. In order to tackle this, we need to set up good alternatives in the form of emergency hospitals with modern equipment.4. Economic Condition:The economic condition of the tribals is awfully miserable. More than 80% of people are below the poverty line. Agriculture, which is the only source of livelihood, depends on rainfall because there is no irrigation. The money-lenders and other people exploit them. The tribals cannot afford to go to the cities to have expensive medical treatment. They cannot bear travelling and staying expenses in cities.
