“They insert a candle in the vagina, fingers are inserted (in the vagina) and tortured, and if children don’t relent even then, they put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. "My son used to kick me when he was in my womb. Why make an issue when he kicked me in my old age?" reasons a very forgiving Shakti Dasi. The widow travelled 2300 kms from Tripura to Vrindavan after her only son violently beat her with a burning plank of wood and broke her knee one evening. She had to leave behind the business she had built with her husband who had died a few years back. Shakti ended up on the streets of Brindavan begging for food and shelter. But when Winnie Singh of Maitri saw Shakti in a frail state in tattered clothes, she brought her to the shelter home where Shakti gets food, care and medicines. What more, with Maitri’s intervention, Shakti reconciled with her son - and daughter-in-law, and now travels home to Tripura twice a year to spend time with her grandchildren. But she is not leaving Maitri, as this has become her family.Not every elderly widow who comes to Vrindavan after being abandoned by her family gets as lucky as Shakti. Many of them often end up living a lonely life and begging to survive on the streets. After being thrown out of their often abandoned by their own children and are forced to beg for food and shelter. “Through Project Jeevan, Maitri houses aging widow mothers in two ashrams in Vrindavan and Radhakund (Mathura), providing them with wellness and well-being. The programme also reaches out to widow mothers beyond the ashrams with fruit, milk and healthcare services,” explains Winnie Singh, co-founder and executive director, Maitri India.Save homeless elderly widows from begging on the streetsMost widows who make their way to Vrindavan are abandoned by their families, often after years of abuse. They come here hoping they will spend the rest of their days in prayer and devotion. But most live in impoverished conditions on the streets and in dingy rooms. Over 250 million people struggle to make ends meet in rural India with the problem being even more acute in the remote mountain regions. This market access not only generates income for the women but also helps in preserving traditional art forms and fostering economic growth in the region.</li><li>With BGS’s help, Meena and Dipa from the Kirmola village have transformed themselves from housewives to independent business women, procuring their own raw materials and finding customers for their products. Another BGS beneficiary, Nirmala Devi of Gumaniwala, part of Vaishnavi Self Help Group (SHG), has emerged as a leader in her community providing encouragement, valuable support and part time employment to several women in her financially challenged neighborhood.</li><li>Moreover, BGS's emphasis on preserving local craftsmanship and utilizing eco-friendly materials contributes to the preservation of cultural heritage and ecological sustainability. By promoting these traditional art forms, BGS encourages pride in local traditions and craftsmanship, ensuring their continuation for future generations.</li></ul>

Meena and Deepa - Charting their own futureIt was heartwarming to see Meena and Deepa, close friends completing each other's sentences and thoughts as they recalled their decade old journeys with BGS. They were feeling quite proud of their current situation, where they no longer rely on BGS to market their products, and are now contributing towards the family's finances. We walked a small hill from the narrow market by the Laxman Jhula area to reach Kirmola village where all houses were tiny and super close to each other that it was hard to tell them apart.Just like hundreds of other women, they both got training in braiding Bhimal and Jute fiber several years ago from BGS. However, through their sheer hard work and enterprising skills, they are now independent business women collaborating with 3 other ladies from their family and neighborhood. All five of them have a routine where they meet in the morning at someone's 'Aangan' or 'Chhat' after completing their household chores and make Bhimal Chappals that they sell online and to the nearby tourist shops. They love socializing and dividing tasks so they could scale up to fulfill a big order. Their 3 day “assembly line” looks like this:<ul><li>Day 1 - Make braided rope</li><li>Day 2 - Stitch ropes to make sole of the slipper</li><li>Day 3 - Make top part of the Slipper</li></ul>Now they are not afraid to rent a truck and procure Bhimal fiber directly from Uttrakhand villagers as demand for their Bhimal Chappals has increased. This is hard work but it saves them on the cost of the raw material which they used to purchase from BGS.Seeing them happy and successful without was truly inspiring.
