“The major problem in society today is the stigma against mentally ill or mentally disabled people. Families feed and care for men who are mentally ill and keep them at home. But no one wants to help women with mental illnesses,” says N Vanitha Rengaraj, chairperson of Sharanalayam.Sharanalaym’s ‘Jothi’ is a sanctuary for over 100 women facing mental challenges. Many women were rehabilitated by the NGO, thanks to its facilities.Sharanalayam needs urgent support to take care of over 100 women. “We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. If they don’t receive education, they will remain uncared for. They will continue to be ignored by not just their families but even by society at large. Whatever I am today is only because of the education I received. But sadly, every blind girl is not as fortunate. Bhartiya Netraheen Kalyan Parishad is a registered NGO. for the all-around development of visually impaired boys &amp; girls. This NGO has helped visually impaired people for a long time. Bhartiya Netraheen Kalyan Parishad is a registered NGO. It came into existence on 28 February 1996 with its registration under Societies Registration Act. Right from its inception, it has been working perenially and unhindered for the holistic and all-round development of persons with special needs, especially the visually impaired. We have set up a goal of making every person with special needs self-reliant and instilling in him/her a feeling of self-dignity, pride, and aplomb so that all of them can be capable of associating themselves with the national mainstream and they can contribute to the development of the nation. Education is the pivot around which the development of a country takes place. In other words, we can say that it is education alone based on which the human development index of a country depends. So, in this direction, we are making significant efforts. Our Parishad is undertaking a residential bridge course for visually impaired children under the age group 6-14 years. It is being done in collaboration with Bihar Shiksha Pariyojana under SSA. These centers for residential bridge courses are located in Bhagalpur, Shekhpura, Lakhisarai, and Begusarai districts of Bihar. These children are getting education in life skills, elementary academics, mobility instruction, and daily life experiences. Our main motto is to include these children in social life after this basic instruction so that they can have the feeling of being an integral part of society. In the hostel, BNKPRI is also running a library for the visually impaired. This library has brail books on various subjects and audio CDs. Every year BNKPRI organizes a plethora of events like marriages of visually challenged couples, Hellen Keller Day, White Cane Day, World Disability Day, Kavi Sammelan, Dance Program of the visually challenged, etc.

Take the case of Reshmi (name changed). Unfortunately, she went blind at age thirteen, and her family was ill-equipped to deal with her struggle. She was forced to drop out of school and had no prospects of living independently and with dignity. But when she contacted BNKPRI for help, her situation permanently changed. We helped her complete her higher education, and she is happily working as a PGT teacher with a post-graduation degree from Delhi University.
