The second wave of the pandemic has hit all sections of the society but the migrant and other daily wage workers who are still coping from the first wave's effects on their livelihood and family's health are still struggling. 230 million people have slipped back under the poverty line, years of progress done by the families have been reversed by a few months of the pandemic and the lockdown followed by it. This has resulted in most migrant workers struggling to reach home or provide safe shelters for their families. The families are living hand to mouth and some are not sure when they would receive their next meal. Along with this most workers are living in stress and uncertainty in this health crisis and do not have the necessary protective tools to ensure the safety and well-being of their families, practice Covid safety methods or detect early signs of Covid infection and find timely medical help. 
 Indus Action and Bhumi aim to support the most vulnerable families of migrant workers &amp; daily wagers through cash transfers to support<ol><li>Home isolation - Ensuring they have access to nutritious meals for their family - provide dry ration kits that will sustain them for 4 weeks</li><li>Enabling Covid-19 appropriate behavior- Provide face masks, soap, and thermometer to monitor any fever during the early stages of the infection.</li><li>Educating the families of migrant workers through our Helpline - We will raise awareness regarding safe community practices, vaccination, and its benefits and reduce reluctance towards vaccination. Our helplines will enable us to identify the unique needs of each family we reach out to and give them customized support and access to locally available resources.</li></ol> 
 Through this effort, Bhumi and Indus Action will provide stability and ensure no migrant worker or daily wager family sleeps hungry or is uninformed, or is unable to protect their family in these times. Our work on the ground will help us map the specific needs of each vulnerable family and build interventions required to support them until they can rebuild their livelihoods and protect their families. We aim to support 5,000 migrant workers' and daily wagers’ families so that they can survive the anticipated lockdowns and lack of livelihoods.

We believe that going to school is the first step towards education, which later helps in building self-esteem, confidence and leadership qualities among children. These qualities are important for children as they can help in providing them with better employment opportunities and also in breaking out of the cycle of poverty. Many disadvantaged parents recognise education as the promise of a better future for their children, but struggle to send them to good schools as they are too expensive. In fact, 80% of Indian children go to state run schools where the often poor quality of education they receive leaves them with little hope of competing with better privileged students later in life for jobs, college education or even in completing their school education. There is, therefore, an urgent need to improve the resources at hand for these children and mentor them to build their skills and self-esteem. 
 Bhumi's volunteers work amongst orphaned and underprivileged children in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, New Delhi and other parts of the country with the aim of providing children with quality supplementary education that will enable them to become responsible and productive citizens of the future.Our educational programme includes teaching English, Computer Literacy, Mathematics, Science, developing extra-curricular talents and individual mentoring.

Hundreds of children live in shelter homes where sometimes even basic necessities are seen as a privilege. Having spent most of their time in such institutions, these children have low self-confidence and very few social skills.Nakshatra aims to provide a platform for the children to ‘Dream’, exhibit their talents, get competitive exposure, ‘Discover’ their potential, 'Dazzle’ in an atmosphere of healthy competition and enrich themselves with much needed perspective about their inherent potentials; thus, we contribute to their holistic development through the promotion of extra-curricular activities. 
 Nakshatra has an array of competitive activities to ensure that children of all age groups from children’s homes participate and gain immensely from competing against their peers. Fifty different competitions in arts – including flower arrangement, pot painting, clay modelling, elocution, dance and song - and athletic and sporting competitions like sprint, high jump, shot put, volley ball and chess are conducted to facilitate maximum talent discovery. The event is peppered with entertainment, games, workshops and a science exhibition to keep the children busy even while they were not competing. 
 In Nakshatra’s first year, approximately 800 children from over 25 orphanages of one city participated. In 2013, Nakshatra’s fifth edition the number has risen to over 5,800 children from 110 orphanages of five cities.At this year’s festival we expect at least 6,500 children to participate from different orphanages in Chennai, Tiruchirapalli, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune and New Delhi. “ASER” states that India’s literacy rate is about 74% - leaving a quarter of the population without basic reading and writing skills. In nearly 60% of schools, there are less than two teachers to teach Classes I to V. A meagre 34.7% of Class VI could perform basic arithmetic calculations like subtraction and division. A dismal one out of four children were clearing Class VIII without acquiring fundamental reading skills. Only 40% of India’s youth is employable.  
 Bhumi believes that every under-privileged child deserves quality education. Thus, Bhumi’s transformational education programme is delivered by change-facilitators for the underprivileged children at shelter homes, community centres and low-income schools to bridge the lack of foundational literacy/numeracy skills, STEAM education and minimise rote learning to encourage holistic development, contributing to enhancing 21st century skills such as critical and cognitive thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration, problem solving, ethics, social responsibility, and digital literacy that advocates and equips the underserved children to thrive in today’s world.   
 We envision our 25,000 beneficiaries that are benefited through the programme with increased opportunities for college and future employment which contributes to their financial and social stability thus, leading to an enhancement in the quality of their life by uplifting them from the vicious cycle of poverty through educational equity and quality education. To date, we have impacted 1,26,545 children across Bhumi’s educational programmes and we aim to impact 1,00,000 such deserving children by 2023.

Disaster Relief

Chennai has been paralyzed by the worst flooding in a century. All the water reservoirs around the city have also been overflowing flooding the city and displacing thousands. The government machinery is unable to fully manage the scale of the tragedy, while the army, navy and NDRF are helping the situation, there is a strong need for citizens like us to step in and help save Chennai and Chennaiites 
 Bhumi along with a consortium of non-profit organisations and individuals has been working for the immediate relief of flood affected individuals. Since, the tragedy has struck our volunteers have been collecting and distributing tonnes of relief material and thousands of food packets every day. We have been careful about avoiding duplicating the efforts of the government or other organisations and only supplementing existing efforts. 
 Thousands have been forced to abandon their homes and displaced into relief camps and other temporary shelters. The money will be used to faciliate their immediate relief like food, drinking water, clothing, mats and blankets. When people start returning to their homes there is also a requirement to provide for long term relief and rehabilitation including prevention of communicable diseases. The money will also be used to support shelter homes and orphanages affected by the flooding.

Support flood victims in Chennai

Disasters like floods, pandemic, earthquakes have become a frequent part of our lives now and when these strike, we hardly have any time to react. The impact of such a calamity, however, does not remain confined to its physical components but transcends beyond and impacts the socio-economic life of the people affected. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought to light the impact of a disaster can have on the lives of the underprivileged.  
 Our volunteers are among the first responders providing immediate relief directly and through a network of partner non-profits. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Bhumi’s disaster helpline 99997-13542 has been receiving hundreds of calls every day from people in need. After validation, they have been supported with groceries and direct financial transfers.  
 Bhumi’s strength lies in mobilising hundreds of volunteers for citizen led action during times of need. Since 2015, our volunteers have mobilised relief for thousands of people and supported over 100 partner organisations and educational institutions. During the COVID-19 pandemic Bhumi has supported direct financial transfers and groceries for over 10,000 daily wagers and groceries for 1,000 children in shelter homes.

Over 25,000 people (civilians, security personnel and extremists) have died in the Left Wing Extremism violence (commonly known as ‘naxal violence’) since 1980 with at least one life every single day over a 38-year period, beginning 1980 and the majority of those killed were civilians. Violence because of naxalism affects 25% of India. Sukma southernmost Adivasi (tribal) district of Chhattisgarh infamous of the frequent encounters between naxal forces and security forces, is one of the most backward region of the country witnessing some of the worst tragedies of modern day India in terms of human rights violation, conflict linked deaths , displacing villagers. In Sukma alone because of the conflict:1.	schools at 36 locations were destroyed 2.	basic education services got affected for 50000+ children 3.	Over 300 school are completely/partially inaccessible for the 50000 children in Sukma aloneWhile delivery of services are delayed and inaccessible, destruction of property happens, human rights violations are often heard of, it is the children who have been the most vulnerable forcing problems that might exist for generations to come. 
 Bhumi, through Project Shiksharth, will be supporting and addressing the problem of access to quality education and improving the education status for naxal affected tribal children who are either enrolled in government schools but lack quality education or children who are out of school because of the naxal conflict.Project Shiksharth is undertaken with the 3 approaches:a) Creating safe spaces for children b) Develop contextual education solutionsc) Collaborate with government In alignment with the above approach, Project Shiksharth has undertaken the following interventions since 2015 while working in Sukma on ground with the children, communities and government:a) Gyanodaya – A project designed to bring back out of school children and take them through a bridge course learning program for 1 year and get them enrolled in a nearby safe school. This year we will be working with over 5000 children by re-opening schools that have been closed for over a decade because of the conflictb) Multi-lingual education and contextual pedagogy – Action research-based work to improve quality of education by developing contextual teaching learning resources in schoolsc) Technical support to local government – Working in designing and implementing various quality interventions for local administration. 
 While in regions like Sukma, concrete impact can only be seen after 8-10 years of intervention yet we have had our moments of achievement since 2015. A glimpse of the impact:1.	Over 1000+ out of school children back to schools because of Project Gyanodaya in collaboration with local administration.2.	Directly served 3000+ children and achieved 1.5 times growth in learning level of the children in our classrooms through our work on Multi-Lingual Education and Contextual Pedagogy.3.	15+ localized science modules developed using low cost resource and 150+ workshops done over 300 hours impacting approx. 2000 children as part of the Science Education Program with 70% knowledge retention rate.4.	6th standard tribal students Roshan Sodi being awarded by Honourable President of India for his idea in handling EVM machines during elections as part of IGNITE competition and 6 students selected at national level for final round5. It’s estimated that 10% of Indians have some form of kidney ailment and nearly 1 lakh new patients suffer advanced kidney diseases every year. But these numbers are only the tip of an iceberg. While the lack of access to specialized facilities kill most patients, the lack of information and poverty kills the rest. Only 2,000 in 2,00,000 patients get Kidney Transplant each year, causing the death toll to double in the last 10 years.Although government schemes make dialysis available at no cost, it can only prolong life but not cure the ailment. Only successful Kidney Transplants can save the patient from death. 
 Our mission is to reach underprivileged patients and provide Comprehensive Kidney Transplant services, right from Medical Evaluation &amp; Legal Committee approval to Transplant Surgery and follow up thereafter. Our vision is to provide uncompromising world class quality of care at least possible cost (or free of cost) at private hospitals of their choice. This mission is possible if both you and our team of dedicated doctors come together – while you donate for quality medical care, the doctors will do what they are best at – improve the quality of living for thousands. 
 Kidney Transplant is a simple, safe and life-saving treatment option. The cumulative cost of dialysis is far higher than transplant. Furthermore, the patient can get back to routine life in just 2-3 months, whereas dialysis confines the patient to 2-3 days a week of life-long care in the hospital.Transplant not only cures the disease but also saves lot of money and time – most importantly, brings back near normal life to the patient.

Support underprivileged patients for Kidney Transplant

As many as 97% of the graduating engineers seek jobs either in software engineering or core engineering. However, only 3% have the skills and only 7% can handle core engineering tasks. The major challenges are outdated curriculum, lack of quality teachers, lack of skill-based education, lack of English language skills and the growing disregard for essential soft skills. 
 It is evident that we need to invest in a child’s holistic development (mental, physical, intellectual and emotional). Bhumi’s Ignite Programme at Schools provides comprehensive quality education by making the classroom a collaborative, peer-supported, fearless environment for children to foster in. While the capacity of the school and its teachers is built through personality development workshops, the children’s social emotional skills are developed by imparting life skills such as self-esteem, mindfulness, empathy, managing relationships, and handling conflicts. Every classroom is also given additional manpower support, leveraging technology to provide children access to individualized content. As the programme progresses, the children will be encouraged to identify and design solutions to challenges faced by their community, hence making them the changemakers of tomorrow. 
 Our approach is whole school transformation, and we partner with teachers, HMs, and parents for children’s overall development. We have grown from working with over 3,000 children last year to over 5,000 children this year.One of the key focus areas of the program is improving foundational literacy and numeracy skills of children who study in grades 2-4 at government and low-income schools.We believe that a conducive learning atmosphere is essential to build a child’s knowledge, self-esteem, confidence, and leadership – qualities that will mold these children to be responsible and liberated citizens in the future.

The loudest echo in every household of urban slums is possibly parents wanting improved standards of living for their children. These parents, usually minimally educated, see their children receiving quality education as a path to break out of the poverty cycle in the future. However, the learning levels of children across most low-income schools are low. This reduces the chance of the child crossing key milestones and getting higher education. Furthermore, the children also lack the stimuli for holistic development, a significant part of which comes from the environment they live in. Personal safety, positive influences, exposure to opportunities, role models to help imbibe good values and choices, and access to learning resources are some of the essentials these children miss out on. 
 Bhumi addresses the problem by setting up community centres/spaces at these slums.The programme is run through the week by volunteer tutors from the same community, who engage with the students and parents with the focus on providing basic literacy and numeracy skills (in Mathematics, English and Tamil) for the children who are in need of this support. They also trigger social consciousness and nurture talent through periodic activities and events.The tutors are trained to provide individual attention to children and make the academic delivery centred around the children’s learning level through activities. The aim is to foster these young minds in a positive learning environment and constantly connect with the parents to ensure their involvement in the learning and development of their children. 
 Bhumi has received support from community members who understand and believe that every child coming to Bhumi’s learning centres gets the opportunity to learn, grow and discover their talents. We hope to pursue this to catalyse the children of today into becoming change agents in their own communities in the future.The tutors and some of the parents have become community champions who strive to achieve Bhumi’s vision to build social consciousness in the young minds to contribute towards their own community, so that the effort continues, and support becomes community owned, self-reliant and self-sustainable.Over 800 children are benefiting from the programme in 26 slum communities across Chennai.By contributing, you can help Bhumi bridge gaps in education and provide a better and secure future for these children from slum communities.

Impact Being a first generation learner from an underprivileged background, Sheela didn't have strong fundamentals in subjects like science and maths to help her continue her academic pursuit. Most children in Grade 2 are unable to recognize alphabets while Grade 5 students fail to write 3 letter words. Bhumi believes, that with the right kind of skill training, these children will become aware of letter-sound relationships. They will comprehend the manner in which they read and hear and express themselves effectively within a time span of 2 to 3 years. An interactive platform targeted at children from underprivileged backgrounds helps them with their listening, reading and writing skills. Each volunteer from Bhumi is assigned a group of 4 to 6 students. The students are engaged in 2-hour long weekend classes that focus on helping the students recognize alphabets using interactive tools. The progress of the children is assessed through baseline, mid-year progressive and year-end assessments to monitor every child's progress. Fulfil Little Desires of Underprivileged Children living in Shelter Homes Across India

As the cities deliberately prepare themselves for unlock phases of the COVID-19 pandemic, “sustainability post crisis” has been brought to the fore. One can see MSME businesses, street or mobile vendors back to earn their means of living. Whilst the unprecedented situation has pushed various companies/industries to adopt new approaches and take necessary viable measures to sustain their profit flow post the lockdown, people belonging to low-income communities whose profit margins are already low face further challenges. Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation states that “there are approximately to 10 million street vendors in India” contributing to the country’s savings and GDP. According to data available with the National Urban Livelihoods Mission, state governments have identified only 15 lakh vendors and issued IDs to fewer than 10 lakh vendors. Although PM SVANidhi Scheme (providing a capital loan of up to Rs. 10,000 for street vendors via http://www.pmsvanidhi.mohua.gov.in/) has several lakh applications with a 10-20% approval rate. 
 The need of the hour so far has been to supplement the health safety measures and provide financial assistance to daily wagers and people of low-income communities meet their basic living expenses as they were affected from the nationwide lockdown since March 22, 2020. As the unlock phase is in effect across various cities, Bhumi’s COVID relief project has stepped in to bridge the need for aiding the street vendors to cope financially and get their livelihood to progress post the lockdown. We aim to directly support these businesses by providing financial assistance and ensuring they get back on their feet at the earliest. 
 Life post lockdown would be a fight for survival for everyone especially for the street vendors as they have to sell their goods on a daily basis to provide and sustain their families.To revive their livelihoods and succor post the unprecedented situation we aim to support and impact the lives of 500 such vendors.

Underprivileged children have desires apart from food, a few clothes, and a safe place to learn and stay. They are grateful for what they are given and maturely understand their lives. The ‘Joy to the World’ program aims to satisfy some of their small wishes during this festive season.  
 Children living in orphanages write wish cards which are collected by Bhumi volunteers. The initiative connects the children with the employees of several leading companies to purchase and distribute them to the children.How this initiative works:• The Bhumi team helps children write their wishes on wish cards and collects them.• After collecting the card, Bhumi’s team purchases the gifts as per the child’s wish.• The gifts are distributed in person to each child (just like secret Santa during Christmas) where the children joyfully receive the gifts they wished for. 
 A child’s smile is a thousand times brighter than the Sun, and the initiative – “Joy to the World” by Bhumi does just that by fulfilling the wishes of underprivileged children in shelter homes/low-income communities The wishes of these children are not luxuries but are necessities. Joy to the World

Impact Chandra is a poor young girl from Chennai who lives in an orphanage. The orphanage could not afford much for the children they sheltered and only looked after their basic necessities. **Although she didn't have much, Chandra never asked for anything more as she was aware of the tough reality of her situation.** Just like Chandra, all the children at the home knew that their wishes had to be limited. They did not even think of things apart from food, a few clothes, and a safe place to learn and stay. **They were all grateful for what they were given and had a mature understanding about their lives.** The organization Bhumi decided to surprise these children with a change in routine. They gave each child from the orphanage a card to scribble a secret wish on. Chandra wrote that she wanted a new school bag. Bhumi collected these cards and bought gifts for each of these children. A simple bag lit up Chandra's face as she'd never gotten a gift before. She now carries her books proudly in it and thinks of it as one of her most precious possessions. About The Program Bhumi runs an annual initiative called 'Joy to the World' where they visit children from underprivileged backgrounds living in orphanages and attempt to fulfill desires and wishes they may not have been very vocal about. These children are encouraged to jot down their unfulfilled wishes on Wish Cards. The team from Bhumi then collects these cards and communicates the wishes to their donors. The children are underprivileged and live in orphanages. Their most common wishes are for books, school bags, shoes, and games to play, either indoor or outdoor. This year, incessant rainfall has deluged various states of the country to the grim situation of floods.The wrath of Mother Nature continues as heavy rainfall causes floods in the state of Bihar, throwing normal life out of gear. Over 30 people have lost their life to the calamity and IMD has retained its 'red colour' warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in the state in the coming days. NDRF has evacuated 4,000 citizens from flooded areas in Patna and as many as 19 teams of NDRF have been deployed in Bihar.[News courtesy: Times of India, Video courtesy: Hindustan Times] 
 Railway traffic, vehicular movement, healthcare services, schools and power supply have been disrupted in the state, and the cuty of Patna is said to be hit the hardest.Bhumi is a PAN India volunteer based organisation working to educate underprivileged children. Since the tragedy struck, our volunteers have been collecting relief funds to contribute effectively to needs. These funds will be used for flood victims to provide shelters, food, medicine, water,first aid etc to the needy people. Our volunteer will be in action and we will try to reach/help as much people as we can.  
 The money will be used for the immediate relief for shelter homes, schools, and those displaced into relief camps and temporary shelters. We shall be providing basic necessities such as food, clothing, mats, and blankets. Impact A group of girls from Madras Seva Sadan Higher Secondary School in Chennai showcased their fashion quotient at the fashion show event in the Bhumi Ignite Fest - an annual inter-home talent fest for less fortunate children. By using products of everyday use like newspapers, colored paper, and charts, this bunch of girls made items that they exhibited on the ramp. Nisha, a standard 9 student made a crown using a Chinese hand-held fan while Nikita made one using rolled colored paper. Girls like Nisha and Nikita, who participated in the fest were extremely shy and reserved only until volunteers from Bhumi intervened, motivated them about their skills and brought them to the forefront. About The Program Ignite' is an after-school program run by Bhumi for 2800 underprivileged children. This program provides an opportunity for children from low-income families to be up-to-speed with the education standards of their age. These classes are held by volunteers on weekends with modern, interactive tools. Their progress is tracked through parameters like improvement in their scores from Baseline Assessment Tests. These children go to state-run schools during the week where their learning is debatable. The curriculum is put together to meet regional needs and undergoes periodic revision. Learning itself is activity-based to engage children on weekends. In addition to primary academic subjects, the supplementary education programme is designed to competently supplement academia, while building life skills. Children who are a part of Ignite also get opportunities to participate in Nakshatra, a talent development programme by Bhumi to exhibit and develop their talents in arts and sports. About The NGO Three like-minded friends in the year 2006 related closely to the need for quality education and believed a solution that creates educationally empowered youth capable of active participation and development of the community they belong to will make them self-reliant, and self-sustainable. Thus, Bhumi – India’‘s largest independent youth volunteering organisation was established in the year 2006 with a vision to help build a more influential, equal and socially conscious society and a mission to drive social change by fostering an environment where young adults &amp; children learn, lead and thrive. Bhumi as a platform enables over 20,000 volunteers in over 12 cities across India for causes like education, environment, animals and community welfare. With an aim to render quality education, Bhumi provides comprehensive educational support for over 25,000 underprivileged children across India to help them break the cycle of poverty. Overflowing reservoirs, flooding cities have displaced thousands. With government machineries being unable to fully manage the tragedy, the army, the navy and the NDRF are helping with the situation. Citizens have also stepped in to support those deeply affected by donating in-kind or by volunteering on-ground. 
 Bhumi, along with a consortium of non-profit organisations and individuals has been working for the immediate relief of flood affected individuals. Since the tragedy struck, our volunteers have been collecting relief funds to contribute effectively to needs. We have been careful about avoiding duplicated efforts of the government or other organisations and only supplementing existing efforts.

A Metro ride is considered a luxury by the poor children. Just a simple ride will make them happy beyond our expectations. So, all we wish for is joyousness of these orphan and destitute children.

They are grateful for what they are given and maturely understand their lives. The ‘Joy to the World’ program aims to satisfy some of their small wishes during this festive season.  Children living in orphanages write wish cards which are collected by Bhumi volunteers. The initiative connects the children with the employees of several leading companies to purchase and distribute them to the children.How this initiative works:• The Bhumi team helps children write their wishes on wish cards and collects them.• After collecting the card, Bhumi’s team purchases the gifts as per the child’s wish.• The gifts are distributed in person to each child (just like secret Santa during Christmas) where the children joyfully receive the gifts they wished for. With several hundred thousand people being affected everyday India's social and health support system is overwhelmed.  As of May 29, 2021 we have enabled support worth 4.1 crores that has either reached or is in the pipeline for over 420 hospitals across India. Equipment includes Oxygen Plants, Oxygen concentrators, flowmeters, monitors, digital X-ray machines and supplies like NRB masks, oxygen masks are being procured and provided to these hospitals. Low-Income communities are also being supported with masks and oximeters for better management of the pandemic at home.

Hundreds of children live in shelter homes where sometimes even basic necessities are seen as a privilege. Having spent most of their time in such institutions, these children have low self-confidence and very few social skills.Nakshatra aims to provide a platform for the children to ‘Dream’, exhibit their talents, get competitive exposure, ‘Discover’ their potential, 'Dazzle’ in an atmosphere of healthy competition and enrich themselves with much needed perspective about their inherent potentials; thus, we contribute to their holistic development through the promotion of extra-curricular activities. Nakshatra has an array of competitive activities to ensure that children of all age groups from children’s homes participate and gain immensely from competing against their peers. Fifty different competitions in arts – including flower arrangement, pot painting, clay modelling, elocution, dance and song - and athletic and sporting competitions like sprint, high jump, shot put, volley ball and chess are conducted to facilitate maximum talent discovery. The event is peppered with entertainment, games, workshops and a science exhibition to keep the children busy even while they were not competing. In Nakshatra’s first year, approximately 800 children from over 25 orphanages of one city participated. In 2013, Nakshatra’s fifth edition the number has risen to over 5,800 children from 110 orphanages of five cities.At this year’s festival we expect at least 6,500 children to participate from different orphanages in Chennai, Tiruchirapalli, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune and New Delhi. Give the Gift of Change

Children in shelter homes are managed and looked after by the warden(s) or caretakers. Usually, the ratio of warden to children is 1:40. This large ratio makes it difficult for the children to receive the individual care, education, and attention they need for their development. Furthermore, most of these shelter homes are technologically underequipped to facilitate an environment that is conducive to the growth of the children. We have identified the problem in four major domains: <ul><li>Shelter Homes are Under-resourced: The shelter homes are under-resourced and this affects the quality of life and adult outcomes of the children.</li><li>Lack of Skill &amp; Emotional Support for Children: There is a lack of educational access, inadequate support in developing life skills, and no emotional support to cope outside the shelter home</li><li>Bad Habits: Children who have grown up in shelter homes often take up menial jobs or get trapped in alcoholism, violence, and drug abuse.</li><li>The Cycle of Poverty: Elder children (11th/12th std) often lack guidance and the necessary support to prepare them for life after 12th std. They enter work right after high school to support the family, unable to take up a stable career.</li></ul><img src="https://cfstatic.give.do/eacc1c5e-c653-4997-9219-3eea809be5c4.png" /> 
 Bhumi’s transformational education program is delivered for the underprivileged children at shelter homes to bridge the lack of foundational literacy/numeracy skills and minimize rote learning and encourage holistic development contributing to enhancing 21st-century skills such as critical and cognitive thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration, problem-solving, ethics, social responsibility, and digital literacy that advocates and equips the underserved children to thrive in today’s world. Bhumi volunteers through this program render quality supplementary education for underprivileged children of classes 1 – 12; through weekly supplementary education to bridge the lack of fundamentals while focusing on increasing their academic skills and bridging the gaps in their learning needs. The projects covered are English, Mathematics, Science, Computer, Robotics, Life Skills/Mentoring, Arts, Dance, and Sports. Our vision is to provide sustainable livelihoods to underprivileged children in shelter homes. To achieve this, we provide holistic education and life-skills support to them through trained volunteers.

In 2023, our Animal Welfare program has made significant strides. Fueled by the dedication of 200 volunteers, we've carried out 22 feeding drives, providing sustenance to over 2800 animals. The pandemic took a heavy toll on the strays, with over 45 million suffering from severe starvation due to the sudden unavailability of human food waste they previously survived. Our cities have pockets of beauty, but they also have pockets of neglect. Beaches strewn with trash, rivers clogged with debris, parks littered with waste - these are common sights. But at Bhumi, we believe in making a difference, one cleanup drive at a time.To keep our environment clean, we organize several initiatives, including beach, river, lake, and park cleanups and regular cleanups of specific locations. We even have blogging events where fitness and cleanliness go hand-in-hand.<img src="https://cfstatic.give.do/8ac322be-aef4-46dc-ad01-a7ba09c1741b.webp" />From April 2022 to June 2023, thousands of volunteers joined our mission. Our beach cleanup saw 2238 volunteers come together to collect 24,634 Kg of debris. The regular cleanup drive engaged 1153 volunteers, resulting in the collection of 4,010 Kg of waste. <img src="https://cfstatic.give.do/76c2e0e5-932e-429f-995a-f20bd7d55edd.webp" />Our river cleanup drive was another significant effort, with 3425 volunteers clearing 12,257 Kg of debris. But our commitment didn't stop at these. We engaged more volunteers during our campaigns.In Daan Utsav 2022, we saw the biggest turnout with 7518 volunteers, resulting in 12,159 Kg of debris collected. During Bhumi's Upcycling Month campaign in 2023, 6,910 volunteers helped collect 2,056 Kg of waste. “ASER” states that India’s literacy rate is about 74% - leaving a quarter of the population without basic reading and writing skills. In nearly 60% of schools, there are less than two teachers to teach Classes I to V. A meagre 34.7% of Class VI could perform basic arithmetic calculations like subtraction and division. A dismal one out of four children were clearing Class VIII without acquiring fundamental reading skills. Only 40% of India’s youth is employable.  Bhumi believes that every under-privileged child deserves quality education. Thus, Bhumi’s transformational education programme is delivered by change-facilitators for the underprivileged children at shelter homes, community centres and low-income schools to bridge the lack of foundational literacy/numeracy skills, STEAM education and minimise rote learning to encourage holistic development, contributing to enhancing 21st century skills such as critical and cognitive thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration, problem solving, ethics, social responsibility, and digital literacy that advocates and equips the underserved children to thrive in today’s world.   We envision our 25,000 beneficiaries that are benefited through the programme with increased opportunities for college and future employment which contributes to their financial and social stability thus, leading to an enhancement in the quality of their life by uplifting them from the vicious cycle of poverty through educational equity and quality education. To date, we have impacted 1,26,545 children across Bhumi’s educational programmes and we aim to impact 1,00,000 such deserving children by 2023.

“UNESCO” estimates that 32 Crore students in India are affected due to COVID-19 school closures and almost 2.4 crore children are at risk of not returning to school next year due to the economic fallout of COVID-19 pandemic. The educational financing gap is also likely to increase by one third. Adding to that, girls and young women are likely to be disproportionately affected as school closures make them more vulnerable to child marriage, early pregnancy and gender-based violence. 
 At Bhumi, we identified the pressing need for quality education among the children from underprivileged families early on, and have been supporting the education of such children at shelter homes/orphanages and communities since 2013. We believe that going to school is the first step towards education, which later helps in building self-esteem, confidence and leadership qualities among children. These qualities are important for children as they can help in providing them with better employment opportunities and also in breaking out of the cycle of poverty. 
 Bhumi is striving to sponsor school and college education for as many children from underprivileged backgrounds as possible by providing them with scholarships. In the year 2019 – 2020, 3,971 children across India have been provided with scholarships (covering annual fees) and monitored for academic excellence. The programme has not just brought out school toppers but also helped shape engineering, medical and financial service professionals. Many disadvantaged parents recognise education as a promise for better future of their children, but struggle to send them to good schools as they are too expensive. In fact, 80% of Indian children goes to state run schools where the often poor quality of education they receive leaves them with little hope of competing with better privileged students later in life for jobs, college education or even in completing their school education. There is, therefore, an urgent need to improve the resources at hand for these children and mentor them to build their skills and self-esteem. 
 I'm Pooja, volunteering with Bhumi. It's my pleasure to work with Bhumi as they aid underprivileged children by educating them, making their future safe and bright. Our educational programme includes teaching english, computer literacy, mathematics, science, developing extra-curricular talents and individual mentoring. 
 Since 2006, Bhumi has consistently been improving the learning abilities of disadvantaged children through education as well as building their self esteem, confidence and leadership; qualities that will prepare them for future employment and help them break the cycle of poverty. The effort of Bhumi's volunteer force, consisting of over 1,000 students and young professionals under the age of 30, benefits over 12,000 children every year.
