Malini is a 13-year-old girl from the slums in Chrompet, Chennai. Her fascination with computers inspired her to become a Software Engineer. However, even though there was a computer lab provided at her school, there were no trained teachers who could adequately instruct students on how to properly operate computer systems.

Luckily, Bhumi was at hand to teach Malini basic computer skills through a programme called "Kanini". Not only are students taught the basics, but those who show an aptitude and interest in more advanced areas are provided with specialised courses. 

With an enthusiastic dedication and through the help of an array of Bhumi volunteers, Malini is now equipped to easily operate and navigate herself around a computer as well as being adept at using Microsoft Office software.

Like most of the children studying at Bhumi centres, Ranjan is the first in his disadvantaged family to go to school. He lacked the confidence to engage with others in English and saw the language as an unnecessary way to communicate. 

Bhumi, aware of the importance of English, stepped in to change Ranjan’s opinion. We enrolled Ranjan into our English classes, where trained volunteers spend 2 hours every weekend with children teaching English using interactive, visual and listening aids following a Cambridge University Curriculum. The programme is designed to help every child’s personal development and language skills.

Today, the change in Ranjan is obvious. Not only is he progressing significantly in learning conversational English but he also loves to read. He has access to storybooks and English software on computers at the centre during the week and doesn’t miss an opportunity to greet new people in his newly learned language. His interest in reading books and daily newspapers stand testimony to this.

Tina is a 13-year-old girl living in an orphanage in Delhi. The young teenager was once a shy girl who enjoyed painting but generally kept her talent to herself and rarely interacted with other children. 

Last year, however, her reserved demeanor did an about turn. Tina attended the annual inter-orphanage festival organised by Bhumi and participated in the painting competition. Not only that but while doing so, she opened herself up to making many new friends.

Tina, choosing to explain the experience herself, said: “We have never had the opportunity to exhibit our talent in front of such a large audience; Bhumi’s support throughout the day was very encouraging and Nakshatra is definitely one of the best experiences we’ve ever had!”

We named this project Seyal - Creativity in Action.✨ Over the past year, Seyal has been running in Chennai Primary School, Maduvinkarai. 506 students from Grades 1 to 5 and 20 teachers have been part of this journey. Earlier, students had limited space for creative expression. Most of their time was spent on reading and writing. Seyal introduced weekly art, craft, theatre, and music sessions within the school schedule. So far, 19 sessions have been conducted using simple, low-cost materials and external facilitators.97.3% of students reported feeling more confident after participating.Teachers have also started using more creative activities in their classrooms. Many disadvantaged parents recognise education as the promise of a better future for their children, but struggle to send them to good schools as they are too expensive.In fact, 80% of Indian children go to state run schools where the often poor quality of education they receive leaves them with little hope of competing with better privileged students later in life for jobs, college education or even in completing their school education.There is, therefore, an urgent need to improve the resources at hand for these children and mentor them to build their skills and self-esteem.Bhumi's volunteers work amongst orphaned and underprivileged children in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, New Delhi and other parts of the country with the aim of providing children with quality supplementary education that will enable them to become responsible and productive citizens of the future.Our educational programme includes teaching English, Computer Literacy, Mathematics, Science, developing extra-curricular talents and individual mentoring.Since 2006, Bhumi has consistently been improving the learning abilities of disadvantaged children through education as well as building their self esteem, confidence and leadership; qualities that will prepare them for future employment and help them break the cycle of poverty.The efforts of Bhumi's volunteer force, consisting of over 1,200 students and young professionals under the age of 30, benefits over 25,000 children every year.By making a small donation of Rs. 500, you can help Bhumi provide a better and more secure future for a disadvantaged child. “UNESCO” estimates that 32 Crore students in India are affected due to COVID-19 school closures and almost 2.4 crore children are at risk of not returning to school next year due to the economic fallout of COVID-19 pandemic. The educational financing gap is also likely to increase by one third. Adding to that, girls and young women are likely to be disproportionately affected as school closures make them more vulnerable to child marriage, early pregnancy and gender-based violence.At Bhumi, we identified the pressing need for quality education among the children from underprivileged families early on, and have been supporting the education of such children at shelter homes/orphanages and communities since 2013. We believe that going to school is the first step towards education, which later helps in building self-esteem, confidence and leadership qualities among children. These qualities are important for children as they can help in providing them with better employment opportunities and also in breaking out of the cycle of poverty.Bhumi is striving to sponsor school and college education for as many children from underprivileged backgrounds as possible by providing them with scholarships. In the year 2019 – 2020, 3,971 children across India have been provided with scholarships (covering annual fees) and monitored for academic excellence. The programme has not just brought out school toppers but also helped shape engineering, medical and financial service professionals. Scholarships for Children from Low-Income Communities

Hundreds of children live in shelter homes where sometimes even basic necessities are seen as a privilege. Having spent most of their time in such institutions, these children have low self-confidence and very few social skills.Nakshatra aims to provide a platform for the children to ‘Dream’, exhibit their talents, get competitive exposure, ‘Discover’ their potential, 'Dazzle’ in an atmosphere of healthy competition and enrich themselves with much needed perspective about their inherent potentials; thus, we contribute to their holistic development through the promotion of extra-curricular activities.Nakshatra has an array of competitive activities to ensure that children of all age groups from children’s homes participate and gain immensely from competing against their peers.Fifty different competitions in arts – including flower arrangement, pot painting, clay modelling, elocution, dance and song - and athletic and sporting competitions like sprint, high jump, shot put, volley ball and chess are conducted to facilitate maximum talent discovery.The event is peppered with entertainment, games, workshops and a science exhibition to keep the children busy even while they were not competing.In Nakshatra’s first year, approximately 800 children from over 25 orphanages of one city participated. In 2013, Nakshatra’s fifth edition the number has risen to over 5,800 children from 110 orphanages of five cities.At this year’s festival we expect at least 6,500 children to participate from different orphanages in Chennai, Tiruchirapalli, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Pune and New Delhi.You can sponsor an enriching experience for a child from a shelter home, for as little as Rs.250! As the cities deliberately prepare themselves for unlock phases of the COVID-19 pandemic, “sustainability post crisis” has been brought to the fore. One can see MSME businesses, street or mobile vendors back to earn their means of living. Whilst the unprecedented situation has pushed various companies/industries to adopt new approaches and take necessary viable measures to sustain their profit flow post the lockdown, people belonging to low-income communities whose profit margins are already low face further challenges. Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation states that “there are approximately to 10 million street vendors in India” contributing to the country’s savings and GDP. According to data available with the National Urban Livelihoods Mission, state governments have identified only 15 lakh vendors and issued IDs to fewer than 10 lakh vendors. Although PM SVANidhi Scheme (providing a capital loan of up to Rs. 10,000 for street vendors via http://www.pmsvanidhi.mohua.gov.in/) has several lakh applications with a 10-20% approval rate.The need of the hour so far has been to supplement the health safety measures and provide financial assistance to daily wagers and people of low-income communities meet their basic living expenses as they were affected from the nationwide lockdown since March 22, 2020. As the unlock phase is in effect across various cities, Bhumi’s COVID relief project has stepped in to bridge the need for aiding the street vendors to cope financially and get their livelihood to progress post the lockdown. We aim to directly support these businesses by providing financial assistance and ensuring they get back on their feet at the earliest.Life post lockdown would be a fight for survival for everyone especially for the street vendors as they have to sell their goods on a daily basis to provide and sustain their families.To revive their livelihoods and succor post the unprecedented situation we aim to support and impact the lives of 500 such vendors.  The foreign currency donations raised for this campaign will be disbursed to Bhumi (a 501(c)(3) registered organisation) which works towards the same cause as the Indian nonprofit.
