“We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. If they don’t receive education, they will remain uncared for. They will continue to be ignored by not just their families but even by society at large. Whatever I am today is only because of the education I received. But sadly, every blind girl is not as fortunate. Children with mental disabilities can be with mental retardation, speech and hearing impairment, autistic, multiple disabled of with cerebral palsy. The family and the society take them as a liability. They only see their disability. They are not interested in training these children. 
 At BWC Dahod we are looking at their ability or their strength so we develop them. We have started with Day care center, Residential school, vocational training center for the children with intellectual disabilities. We have about 100 children with mental retardation, including downsyndrome, cerebral palsy, multiple disabilities, autism etc. We have about 10 class rooms and 4 trades for vocational training. About 10 students are also trained for computer operating.Here they are educated for pre primary and primary section. They are also trained for activities of daily living, social behaviour, festivals training, special olympics and all kinds of sports and extra curricular activities.We have about 20 specially trained teachers. They have either diploma or degree in special education. 
 The children are found to be confident, having self respect, having a feel that they can do something for themselves and for their family. They are independent in their daily living activities. They can read and write simple words. They can sing poems and tell stories. They take part in district, State and National level sports competitions and win medals. In vocational trainning they are able to make paper dish, candles, chalks, files, handicrafts article. They are now able to copy and type simple words and numbers on computers.
