If they don’t receive education, they will remain uncared for. They will continue to be ignored by not just their families but even by society at large. Whatever I am today is only because of the education I received. But sadly, every blind girl is not as fortunate. “I would hear the footsteps of children from my village chirping and running to school every morning. I felt disheartened that I could not join them anymore. By then I had lost my eyesight completely due to a genetic condition. But even though I had lost my vision I never lost my dreams,” says Arti. Her father is paralysed and her mother is a daily wage farm labourer. Her siblings are also visually impaired. But Arti had dreams, and she couldn’t burden her family any more.“It was my fight to do something with the life I had been given that brought me to Blind Welfare Society (BWS) after school,” she says. A resident of BWS in Delhi for the last 3 years, Aarti is pursuing a career in teaching.BWS has not only provided her shelter and financial support but also counselling and guidance.BWS, has been a saviour for 40 visually impaired girls many of whom have been abandoned by their families and have nowhere to go. The NGO provides these young girls and women food, shelter and support their education so they can pursue a life of their dreams. But BWS is facing a serious financial crunch, and without your support, the NGO could be on the verge of closing and making its residents homeless. And it was in 2010 that I started BWS to provide shelter, food and educational support,” says Dheeraj.Dheeraj says that visually impaired girls are vulnerable to abuse and exploitation, and they need to be provided a safe home and family-like environment. “I had resolved to never let a visually impaired girl student feel like she was in an orphanage or a hostel but I wanted them to feel like they are living in their own house among family members”, he further adds.Difficult timesOver the last two years, BWS has been facing a severe fund crunch and has not been able to fulfil even some of the basic needs of its 40 residents and then there is the threat of eviction from the the rented property. “Most of the blind residents do not have a home to go back to if they are evicted and may even end up on the street. Though the life was difficult for Anil before pandemic, still he was able to feed his family by selling toys in the local trains at Delhi Railway Station. He and his wife Anita both are fully blind.There are many most unfortunate blind people across Delhi, who used to sell toys, sing songs and beg in trains or at the bus stops. Since the pandemic, their income has gone down to zero. These blind people are starving daily without food and don’t even have sources of income to buy Grocery which can help them to sustain themselves for a few weeks.  
 Their families are suffering from hunger. With the pandemic situation worsening, they’re doubtful of a better future as well. These people need our help. The pandemic has left them in the lurch, but we shouldn’t. We wish to reach out to the needy at this extremely difficult time. We will help these blind people who need us more than ever. 
 These grocery kits can help the needy blind people keep going for a month. It contains the essentials for healthy and nutritious meals. In our country, girls are usually not the preferred child. To this date, there continues to be discrimination between a male and a female child, for a variety of reasons deeply embedded in the nature of our social construct. The case is much worse for a girl child who is deprived of the gift of vision.It is often said that a visually challenged girl child bears the double burden of being a woman and being blind. She is seen as a burden on society and a drain on the family’s honor. Visually challenged girls who are born into poor families often face a very challenging life, which can drive them towards hopelessness. They do not have access to the same quality of life, education, employment or personal well-being when compared to someone without a visual impairment.Educational and employment opportunities available for blind persons are much fewer than those available for other people. Social and cultural barriers further prevent visually impaired women from taking up jobs that are distant or remote - there are few alternatives for sheltered employment or jobs that are conducive to visually impaired individuals.BWS does not perpetuate the discrimination faced by visually challenged girls in their homes and society. The girl children who are assisted by our organization come from various states of India such as Uttar Pradesh (UP), Bihar, Madhya Pradesh (MP), Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Punjab, West Bengal, Odisha as well as Delhi to reside at the hostel. BWS does not discriminate among visually challenged girls and works with the same vigor irrespective of their caste, color, creed, religion, class or family background.The visually challenged girls' hostel at Swaroop Nagar, Delhi, stands as a shining example of compassion and empowerment. By providing free boarding and lodging facilities, coupled with a clean, hygienic, and professionally managed environment, the hostel offers a sanctuary for 40 girls from some of the most marginalized and economically disadvantaged families from various states of the country.The thoughtful design of the hostel infrastructure reflects a commitment to providing a comfortable and homely environment tailored to the needs of residents with visual impairment. Radha Kumari's (name changed) journey at the Blind Welfare Society (BWS) in Delhi is a story of unwavering determination and resilience. Hailing from the Kaimur district of Bihar, Radha became completely blind at the age of 6. Despite the darkness that enveloped her world, her spirit remained unbroken, and her ambition to succeed undimmed. In 2021, Radha Kumari joined BWS, a sanctuary for visually impaired girls and women, where she pursued her graduation from Delhi University. But her aspirations didn’t stop there; she aimed for a position in government service, a dream that required not just hard work but extraordinary perseverance. BWS provided her with the necessary tools for her journey – a laptop, DVD player, and screen reading software – to ensure that her disability would not stand in the way of her dreams.Radha's journey was not without its hurdles. Despite several attempts at competitive examinations, success initially eluded her. But her resolve never wavered. With each setback, her determination grew stronger, eventually leading her to pass the Multi Task Employee exam conducted by the Staff Selection Commission. Her story is a beacon of hope and an example to others at BWS and beyond, embodying the message that perseverance can overcome the greatest of challenges. Radha Kumari is not just a beneficiary of BWS's support but a testament to the strength and potential of the human spirit when given the right opportunities and support. Today, BWS faces financial difficulties that threaten its ability to continue supporting girls like Radha. Your support has truly made a remarkable difference, we can't wait to share the incredible impact of your donations! 🏡💖 Field Visit Date: 16/08/2023Field Visit by: Nehal Negi, Sr. Associate, Online Giving Delivery Team - Give Visit Report:We visited the hostel for the visually challenged girls run by Blind Welfare Society at Swaroop Nagar, Delhi. There are currently 29 girls residing in the hostel. They come from different parts of India, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana, Odisha, Punjab, and West Bengal. These girls come from the most marginalized and poorest of the poor families, with little or no family support. These girls come to BWS to pursue their higher education. Along with lodging, girls are also provided three times meals, snacks, medical aid, as well as financial support. The hostel has a kitchen and an office on one floor, where the warden stays along with two other cooks. Each floor has six rooms and two common washrooms. Three to four girls are accommodated in one room. During our visit, we had the opportunity to interact with some of the girls. One of the girls, Usha, is from Ghaziabad and her parents are laborers. She has three sisters and two brothers and is currently studying at PGDAV college, pursuing Hindi Hons. She aspires to become a teacher.&nbsp; We also visited BWS's office in Nihal Vihar, Delhi, where the dedicated admission and office staff work tirelessly to provide safe home to these young girls. BWS ensures that only the most deserving girls find their way here. To be eligible, they must have secured admission to a nearby college, have a local guardian, undergo in-person meetings with parents/guardians, and hail from financially disadvantaged backgrounds. Once admitted, they receive laptops and mobile phones, vital tools for their education. These girls can stay in the hostel throughout their educational journey. BWS goes above and beyond, providing career counseling and employment assistance to ensure they thrive in life.
