"My son used to kick me when he was in my womb. Why make an issue when he kicked me in my old age?" reasons a very forgiving Shakti Dasi. The widow travelled 2300 kms from Tripura to Vrindavan after her only son violently beat her with a burning plank of wood and broke her knee one evening. She had to leave behind the business she had built with her husband who had died a few years back. Shakti ended up on the streets of Brindavan begging for food and shelter. But when Winnie Singh of Maitri saw Shakti in a frail state in tattered clothes, she brought her to the shelter home where Shakti gets food, care and medicines. What more, with Maitri’s intervention, Shakti reconciled with her son - and daughter-in-law, and now travels home to Tripura twice a year to spend time with her grandchildren. But she is not leaving Maitri, as this has become her family.Not every elderly widow who comes to Vrindavan after being abandoned by her family gets as lucky as Shakti. Many of them often end up living a lonely life and begging to survive on the streets. After being thrown out of their often abandoned by their own children and are forced to beg for food and shelter. “Through Project Jeevan, Maitri houses aging widow mothers in two ashrams in Vrindavan and Radhakund (Mathura), providing them with wellness and well-being. The programme also reaches out to widow mothers beyond the ashrams with fruit, milk and healthcare services,” explains Winnie Singh, co-founder and executive director, Maitri India.Save homeless elderly widows from begging on the streetsMost widows who make their way to Vrindavan are abandoned by their families, often after years of abuse. They come here hoping they will spend the rest of their days in prayer and devotion. But most live in impoverished conditions on the streets and in dingy rooms. “They insert a candle in the vagina, fingers are inserted (in the vagina) and tortured, and if children don’t relent even then, they put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), in course of talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas.In over three decades, the SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas, many from clutches of sex trafficking.Sadly, many more children need to be rescued and in need of a loving home. Radha Kumari's (name changed) journey at the Blind Welfare Society (BWS) in Delhi is a story of unwavering determination and resilience. Hailing from the Kaimur district of Bihar, Radha became completely blind at the age of 6. Despite the darkness that enveloped her world, her spirit remained unbroken, and her ambition to succeed undimmed. In 2021, Radha Kumari joined BWS, a sanctuary for visually impaired girls and women, where she pursued her graduation from Delhi University. But her aspirations didn’t stop there; she aimed for a position in government service, a dream that required not just hard work but extraordinary perseverance. BWS provided her with the necessary tools for her journey – a laptop, DVD player, and screen reading software – to ensure that her disability would not stand in the way of her dreams.Radha's journey was not without its hurdles. Despite several attempts at competitive examinations, success initially eluded her. But her resolve never wavered. With each setback, her determination grew stronger, eventually leading her to pass the Multi Task Employee exam conducted by the Staff Selection Commission. Her story is a beacon of hope and an example to others at BWS and beyond, embodying the message that perseverance can overcome the greatest of challenges. Radha Kumari is not just a beneficiary of BWS's support but a testament to the strength and potential of the human spirit when given the right opportunities and support. Today, BWS faces financial difficulties that threaten its ability to continue supporting girls like Radha. Your support has truly made a remarkable difference, we can't wait to share the incredible impact of your donations! 🏡💖 Field Visit Date: 16/08/2023Field Visit by: Nehal Negi, Sr. Associate, Online Giving Delivery Team - Give Visit Report:We visited the hostel for the visually challenged girls run by Blind Welfare Society at Swaroop Nagar, Delhi. There are currently 29 girls residing in the hostel. They come from different parts of India, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Delhi, Haryana, Odisha, Punjab, and West Bengal. These girls come from the most marginalized and poorest of the poor families, with little or no family support. These girls come to BWS to pursue their higher education. Along with lodging, girls are also provided three times meals, snacks, medical aid, as well as financial support. The hostel has a kitchen and an office on one floor, where the warden stays along with two other cooks. Each floor has six rooms and two common washrooms. Three to four girls are accommodated in one room. During our visit, we had the opportunity to interact with some of the girls. One of the girls, Usha, is from Ghaziabad and her parents are laborers. She has three sisters and two brothers and is currently studying at PGDAV college, pursuing Hindi Hons. She aspires to become a teacher.&nbsp; We also visited BWS's office in Nihal Vihar, Delhi, where the dedicated admission and office staff work tirelessly to provide safe home to these young girls. BWS ensures that only the most deserving girls find their way here. To be eligible, they must have secured admission to a nearby college, have a local guardian, undergo in-person meetings with parents/guardians, and hail from financially disadvantaged backgrounds. Once admitted, they receive laptops and mobile phones, vital tools for their education. These girls can stay in the hostel throughout their educational journey. BWS goes above and beyond, providing career counseling and employment assistance to ensure they thrive in life. Though the life was difficult for Anil before pandemic, still he was able to feed his family by selling toys in the local trains at Delhi Railway Station. He and his wife Anita both are fully blind.There are many most unfortunate blind people across Delhi, who used to sell toys, sing songs and beg in trains or at the bus stops. Since the pandemic, their income has gone down to zero. These blind people are starving daily without food and don’t even have sources of income to buy Grocery which can help them to sustain themselves for a few weeks.  
 Their families are suffering from hunger. With the pandemic situation worsening, they’re doubtful of a better future as well. These people need our help. The pandemic has left them in the lurch, but we shouldn’t. We wish to reach out to the needy at this extremely difficult time. We will help these blind people who need us more than ever.
