“What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. The COVID-19 virus impacts people differently. The primary victims are those infected by the virus and the secondary victims are those affected by the consequences of the pandemic, especially the national lockdown. The numbers of secondary victims are exponentially higher than the primary victims and the consequences are also more severe and long-lasting for them. The impact has been devastating for the secondary victims who are migrants, daily wagers, farmers, traders in the informal sector, who lost their livelihood and income; whose families are left to starve because of the lockdown. In response, Don Bosco Network has been distributing grocery packs, cooked food, toiletries, sanitary items, and masks, especially to these people. It has been creating awareness of the infection, providing counselling support, healthcare and other services. As the lockdown continues, there are lakhs of people yet to be reached. Don Bosco Network aims to save and sustain these people for at least 10 days with provisions. 
 Don Bosco Network will distribute provisions to the vulnerable families who have lost their incomes and livelihood.  Each package will contain: <ul><li>Rice (5kg),Dal (2 kg)</li><li>Atta (5 kg), Oil (1 kg)</li><li>Sugar (1 kg), Salt (1 pkt)</li><li>Biscuits (5 pkts)</li><li>Bath soap (3 nos)</li><li>Washing soap (3 nos). </li></ul>The items will be procured from wholesalers, packaged and distributed to the vulnerable people in their locations by our dedicated volunteers. Don Bosco Network will secure necessary permissions for distribution and passes for the vehicles. Necessary safety measures such as physical distance, masks, protective gloves, etc. will be ensured. Photographs/videos and individual beneficiary details will be documented and reported. 
 Don Bosco Network -South Asia so far (7th May20) has served 98,900 families with 4,06,800 individuals for dry kits.Don Bosco has distributed 2,05,300 cooked meals, 28,180 sanitary kits, 3,63,000 face masks.Our initiative will prevent starvation of more vulnerable families, will have food, at least for 10-15 days. Immunity is the primary guard against COVID-19 infection. Starvation would reduce the immunity level and improve the chances of infection. Provisions of food will save these poor families, particularly the children, and sustain them through improved immunity during the pandemic. This will have a ripple effect on the wellbeing of society and the nation in general by containing the virus and promoting good health.

Essential Relief Kit for Migrant/Daily Wage Workers Affected by the COVID-19 Lockdown

In these seemingly distressing times, it has become a reality that the most important aspects of human life are food and nutrition. Low-income households tend to eat less nutritious foods than other households. People with insecure / inadequate food and low-income are vulnerable to poor nutrition, low immunity, and high-risk of infections. For example, though food and nutritional insecurity were prevalent in rural areas even before COVID-19, the pandemic has made it more severe.At this juncture, we are pressed to think of a sustainable solution to ensure food security at least household level. Kitchen garden is one such cost-effective and sustained solution. Kitchen gardens are very useful in reducing the malnutrition levels as well as make sure availability of food. In rural or urban areas, the daily wagers and the migrants have lost their income and earning opportunities due to the COVID-19 pandemic – kitchen gardens can ensure a healthy diet or macro and micronutrient-rich food.Vegetables are important constituents of Indian food and a source of nutritional security due to their short duration, nutritional richness, and economic viability. They are the vital sources of proteins, vitamins, minerals, dietary fibres, micronutrients, antioxidants, phytochemicals and anti-carcinogenic principles in our daily diet and more crucial in improving our immunity to fight against the COVID-19 virus infection.This project proposes “integrated kitchen gardening” as a practical, cost-effective and sustainable solution to ensure regular supply of vegetables and addresses nutrition issues that the poor and vulnerable households are facing during the COVID-19 crisis.Aligning with the UN Framework on Responding to the Socio-Economic Impacts of COVID-19 and the UNSDG Socioeconomic Framework, including protecting people, supporting economic recovery and helping to meet people’s most immediate food and other basic needs BOSCONET intends to ensure household food security by training and supporting developing kitchen gardens. 
 The programme aims to ensure food security while in assisting the vulnerable people to be self-sufficient, and practice healthier eating during this COVID-19 crisis; to facilitate the people to grow their own vegetables in the open space available or on the roof top.<ul><li> To increase in savings on food purchases at household level.</li><li>Access to wide-range of food, leading to health benefits by improved immunity</li></ul> The strategy1.      Households that have space (on the ground or terrace, etc.) to grow vegetables and rear chickens will be selected.2.      Seeds and seedlings (assorted) (Rs. 250), Vermicompost 10 kg (Rs.15 per kg), and 10 UV stabilized plant-grow-bags (Rs.75 * 10 bags) will be freely distributed to the selected households as a starter kit.3.      Five country chickens also will be distributed to the selected households towards an integrated home farm, towards additional income and also for self-sustenance and better nutrition (eggs and chicken meat).4.      A booklet on kitchen gardening practices in the local languages will be developed and distributed to the selected households with self-explanatory pictures, providing step- by-step guidelines right from sowing, fertilizing, watering, maintaining, and to harvesting.5.      The beneficiary household members, particularly women, will be informed about the methods of creating and maintaining a vegetable garden; chicken rearing, recycling of household organic wastes and faeces of chickens into manures for the garden. 
 1.      Self-sustained vegetable production throughout the year for the household.2.      Escalation in per capital consumption of vegetables, eggs, and chicken meat.3.      Provides nutritional security through fresh green vegetables and chicken products and provides a tangible security to vegetable production.4.      Women empowerment through indirect economic contribution.5.      Farm-at-Home is financially rewarding to the soaring vegetable prices today.6.      Contribution towards invigorating the environment.

Integrated Farm for Food and Income

1804 identified underprivileged children residing in the underserved district of Palghar, Maharashtra &amp; Ramnathpur, and Tamil Nadu are deprived of quality primary education due to various complex reasons – school closure in the past two years, seasonal family migration, understaffing in public schools, no alternative learning avenues and unaffordability to learn in private schools. All these reasons result in a high dropout of these underprivileged children. In the absence of non-schooling, i.e., remedial education, the vulnerable children may be subject to substance abuse and trafficking, as generally, the non-schooling are forced into child labouring, which scatters their aspirations &amp; dreams of a bright future. 
 The issue of school dropout has to look holistically at the ground level. Thus BOSCONET is strategically fixing this issue by providing remedial education through 60 centers comprising of 60 learner per center. - In the remedial education centers, our teacher plays a pivotal role, providing one-on-one coaching to every child to improve their abilities to achieve the expected level of competency in core academics like literacy &amp; numeracy.- Besides learning, the children were also provided an enabling environment by providing indoor &amp; outdoor games.- Awareness is given on various child abuse &amp; its prevention mechanism 
 In the year 2022-23, the children are attending our 60 remedial education centers:- 96% attained minimum learning levels- 85% showed improvement in grades- 60 request letters filed by the Child Parliaments made representations to their respective panchayat offices to redress their grievances.- 98% have a functional understanding of child abuse
