“They insert a candle in the vagina, fingers are inserted (in the vagina) and tortured, and if children don’t relent even then, they put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. And the worst affected are the children who grow up in red-light areas and are subjected to constant abuse and violence. “The sight of a 12-year-old girl being gang-raped by a group of men near a house l haunts me to this date. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. Priya, a bright and spirited young girl from a small village in Salem district, has lived through challenges that would test even the strongest. Her father, a lorry driver, passed away when she was just four years old, leaving her widowed mother to raise Priya and her two siblings. Her mother, a daily wage worker at a snack-manufacturing unit, worked tirelessly to meet the family’s basic needs and support her children’s education. Life for Priya became even more difficult when she fell seriously ill in December, battling a viral fever that kept her out of school for months. Coupled with her hearing difficulties, the long absence made her fall behind in her studies, and she began to lose interest in attending school altogether. Priya struggled to find motivation and often felt out of place in the classroom, worrying her mother deeply. Amid these struggles, however, Priya discovered a glimmer of hope in the group sessions at Buds of Christ. These sessions became a sanctuary for her, where she found joy and purpose. Priya eagerly participated in crafts, dance, and interactive activities with younger children, her natural talents shining through. Her enthusiasm and active involvement even surprised her mother, who found solace in seeing her daughter thrive in this supportive environment. During school holidays, Priya learned the skill of basket weaving from her mother. What started as a way to pass time turned into a meaningful contribution to her family’s income, as Priya began making one basket a day. This newfound skill not only eased her family’s financial burden but also gave her a sense of accomplishment and pride. Taking charge of her health, Priya embraced a leadership role within her family by preparing nutritious Moringai (drumstick leaves) soup every day. She credits the soup for her improved energy and well-being, affectionately calling it her “secret to health.” Her proactive approach inspired her family and even encouraged neighborhood children to adopt healthier habits. Priya’s journey is one of courage and transformation. Despite the odds stacked against her, she has found strength in her creativity, resilience, and the love of her family. Her story is a beautiful reminder that hope, when nurtured, can light the way forward even in the darkest of times. Priya is now not only a source of pride for her family but also a beacon of inspiration for her community, proving that challenges can be transformed into stepping stones for a brighter future.
