“They insert a candle in the vagina, fingers are inserted (in the vagina) and tortured, and if children don’t relent even then, they put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. “I used to be sexually abused repeatedly, and when I screamed in pain, they hit and threatened me with more violence,” says Priya (name changed), a rescued child sex worker. Priya was abducted by traffickers and sold into a red-light area house before she was rescued by Guria led by Manju. For over two decades, Manju has been rescuing young girls forced into prostitution across the country. She has been shaken to the core seeing some of the most horrifying crimes that young girls have to undergo. “You can’t imagine the state of girls forced into sex work. The girls are given electric shocks and burnt with cigarette butts just to get kicks out of it. And if they get pregnant, the "owners" kick them repeatedly in the womb so that the child inside dies…If you want to see hell, it is here on this planet where young girls are sexually abused,” says Manju.Manju needs your help to rescue more young girls from forced prostitution and reunite them with their families. Donate now.Guria’s work over the yearsBased out of Varanasi, inarguably the holiest place in India, Manju and her organisation Guria, fights the sexual exploitation of girls, especially minors, by taking on the traffickers head-on, and rescuing and rehabilitating them.Started in 1993, Guria has rescued over 5500 persons from slavery, sex trafficking, and child prostitution so far. It has also been instrumental in shutting down hundreds of places that housed trafficked girls and putting scores of traffickers out of business and in jail.For instance, in 2005, a Guria-led rescue operation in Varanasi's red-light area led to the freeing of 49 women and girls, including minors. Many of them were kept against their will. Some of the traffickers were also arrested and tried. Since then, Guria has rescued thousands of young girls.Manju and her husband, Ajeet Singh began rescuing girls from Varanasi’s red-light areas and then working to stop the sex-trafficking of young girls within Uttar Pradesh and outside. The organisation’s aim is to eliminate the sex trafficking of women, especially minor girls, end second-generation prostitution and child prostitution, and rehabilitate women and girls who are rescued from the trade. Manju has faced violent backlash from the traffickers and other vested interests, but it has not deterred her from carrying on rescuing young girls from trafficking. Rescue and rehabilitationBesides rescuing girls trafficked for sex, mostly from low-income families, from across the country, Guria fights on their behalf in courts and also provides education, food, vocational training, and other facilities until they are united with their families. But because of a lack of funds, Guria is finding it difficult to rescue more girls and also take care of them once they are away from the clutches of the traffickers. Take the case of Sameena (name changed), who was abducted from Uttar Pradesh all the way to Telangana. Guria took it upon itself to rescue the girl with the help of its own work and also the authorities. After months of rehabilitation, Sameena went back to her family and even completed her education. <a href="http://www.buzzwomen.org/" rel="noopener noreferrer nofollow" target="_blank">Buzz Women</a> enables underserved women by making knowledge, skills and tools available at their doorsteps towards economic, social, personal and ecological empowerment through various training. The programs are built on the foundation of the 5 Cs - Cash, Care, Climate, Community, and Confidence. Buzz Women wishes to aid in combating poverty not only through a change management process that deals with the economical aspect of poverty, but also the ecological, psychological, and sociological aspects. The program is divided into multiple interventions that are contextual and meaningful. Buzz India, through its program aspires to achieve the 1st SDG of ‘No Poverty’ and 5th SDG of ‘Gender Equality’. The women who go through our intervention have inculcated a savings habit (79%), participate in household decision making (69%), demonstrating confidence (67%), expand their enterprises (69%), and actively participate in community discussion (28%).  From 2012 to-date Buzz Women has reached 5,00,000 women, and has more than 10000 volunteer Community anchors in its network across 11 districts of Karnataka. We have also been able to franchise the model to The Gambia and Georgia. We aim to reach 1 crore women by 2030 in all 30 districts of Karnataka.

The United Nations Commission on Environment and Development (UNCED) released the Brundtland report that establishes a basis for sustainability that rests on three related disciplinary dimensions, or pillars: environmental/ecological, economic and social. The same paper also argues that if the social dimension is addressed by making individuals participate in decision making and help communities continuously find near solutions then the economic and ecological will follow. It is with this in the backdrop that our Community anchor/Gelathi program has to be looked at. 
 We believe that social change, especially that pertaining to behavioral change is a long-term process. Therefore, long-term community owned engagement is important to achieve our goal of changing mindsets and attitudes. Post our first level of intervention the batch of trained women are asked to identify their ‘Gelathi’ or Community Anchor. She becomes the point of contact between Buzz and the community. We envisage that the role of Buzz Volunteer Community Anchors as local women leaders who will be coaches for the community women. We offer training along with a printed kit to the Buzz Volunteer Community Anchors that involves lessons on courage, confidence, communication, community building, problem solving and taking ownership. This is called the Spoorthi fellowship (Inspiration fellowship) which focuses on bringing community anchors of neighboring villages together where 10-15 women community anchors form a circle and attend the fellowship together. This formation of women into a collective also helps women to learn from each other as they embark upon the journey of becoming the leaders of the community who problem-solve for the welfare of the entire village. The Volunteer Community Anchor also shares a few stories, if need be, in the monthly circle meetings among other Volunteer Community Anchors. This is to build an ecosystem around the community anchor towards community problem solving. Community Anchor facilitates monthly Beehive meetings in their villages among the Buzz trained women where they share knowledge, skills, and tools that they have received during the Spoorthi Training. During the Beehive meetings, smaller modules of Spoorthi training will be used to help the other women learn and grow. The attendees also share their personal and community issues with their peer group and together they try to come up with solutions. The community women will also gather at these meetings to effectively organize community dialogues that will lead to problem solving for the community.
