“We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. According to the nonprofit office bearer, “Many parents neglect their blind daughters and at times even sell them off for begging, etc. Even if the girl is from a well-to-do family, they feel providing education and care to a blind girl is a waste of money”. “What is the fault of an innocent child?”, she asks.Education, the only hope “These girls have no future without education. If they don’t receive education, they will remain uncared for. They will continue to be ignored by not just their families but even by society at large. Whatever I am today is only because of the education I received. But sadly, every blind girl is not as fortunate. “The major problem in society today is the stigma against mentally ill or mentally disabled people. Families feed and care for men who are mentally ill and keep them at home. But no one wants to help women with mental illnesses,” says N Vanitha Rengaraj, chairperson of Sharanalayam.Sharanalaym’s ‘Jothi’ is a sanctuary for over 100 women facing mental challenges. Many women were rehabilitated by the NGO, thanks to its facilities.Sharanalayam needs urgent support to take care of over 100 women. The Special Schools are meant to provide for residential as well as non-residential care with the end objective of bringing about varying degrees of improvement in the lives of the Intellectual disabilities. These may range from acquiring skills as basic as activities of daily living to their integration into regular institutions of learning and society in general. With reference to the children with Intellectual Disability, Cerebral Palsy/Autism Spectrum Disorder/Multiple Disabilities/Muscular Dystrophy, Deaf-blindness categories. The main objectives of Special Schools are:  i.	To undertake a proper assessment and diagnosis of each child.  ii.	To identify the psychological and therapy needs of the child.   iii.	To manage behavioral problems and to impart special skills, self-help skills, and cater to the therapy needs of children with Intellectual Disability/Cerebral Palsy/Autism Spectrum Disorder/Multiple Disabilities/Deafblindness/Muscular Dystrophy etc.   iv.	To manage the educational and vocational needs.   v.	To give special inputs for the improvement the communication/ language/motor/social/cognitive/adaptive skills of the children with ID/CP/ASD/MD/Db/Muscular Dystrophy, etc.   vi.	To Develop partnerships with donors, families, healthcare professionals, and community organizations to ensure comprehensive support.

Centre for Action on Disabled Rights and Empowerment – CADERE is a non-profit organization founded by a group of Persons with Disabilities in the year 2000 with an aim to empower the Persons with disabilities and most disadvantaged groups living in the urban, rural and tribal areas in the state of Telangana. The Mission of the organization is to create developmental opportunities for the most marginalized and deprived communities by building their capacities and capabilities to assert their constitutional rights and entitlements so that they can be self-reliant and live in dignity. Since the inception the organization has reached to 25000 persons with disabilities through its programs in the areas of skill development, livelihood generation and disability rights and empowerment. Further to this the organization has reached to more than 50,000 most deprived and marginalized communities through education, health, skill and livelihood promotional programs.
