For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. During the last two decades, CMIG has been engaged in a movement to create a community where the inherent human values, experience, and expertise of senior citizens are respected and utilized. In CMIG, both the academics and the activists in the field of aging work hand in hand. We are purposively engaged in action-oriented gerontological research to improve the quality of life of our parental generation. Giving doles for sustenance is not our only motto. We offer much stress on the word Empowerment. To run each &amp; every project we learn through trials and errors – norms set and infrastructure developed, tried and seen how effective they were. At present CMIG has three major activities.
