Calcutta Metropolitan Institute of Gerontology (CMIG) was founded in 1988 with a view to rendering all possible help and relief to the aged and at the same time to instill in them a sense of confidence in their capability and worthiness as active citizens. During the last two decades, CMIG has been engaged in a movement to create a community where the inherent human values, experience, and expertise of senior citizens are respected and utilized. In CMIG, both the academics and the activists in the field of aging work hand in hand. We are purposively engaged in action-oriented gerontological research to improve the quality of life of our parental generation. Giving doles for sustenance is not our only motto. We offer much stress on the word Empowerment. Organization Vision and Objectives: Initiating and fostering programs that will help older people to remain active and share their valued experience and skills with other members of the community  Sponsoring training and educational programs concerned with the quality of life of older people  Promoting multidisciplinary research in the field of gerontology  Convening conferences, workshops, seminars and discussions for all who are involved in the field of gerontology  Publication of quarterly journals, research papers and books on gerontology for disseminating information regarding the elderly When we started CMIG in the year 1988 with the objective to promote research in the field of Gerontology and also to implement it into action, to rehabilitate the elderly belonging to different socio-economic groups and to fulfill the basic needs of downtrodden elderly, there was no model or precedence to follow. To run each &amp; every project we learn through trials and errors – norms set and infrastructure developed, tried and seen how effective they were. At present CMIG has three major activities. It promotes research, imparts training, and renders service to the downtrodden elderly.
