For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. Calcutta Rescue is an Indian charity providing health care and education to the people who are economically most disadvantaged and socially most disfavoured in Kolkata and West Bengal. British physician, Dr. Jack Preger, began his work on the pavements of Kolkata 40 years ago, and established Calcutta Rescue as a registered Society in 1991. Since then it has grown to over 180 Indian employees serving over 30,000 impoverished and destitute people through our health clinics and providing education and nutrition to over 650 children in our two education centres. In addition, our arsenic-free filters ensured that 12 villages could access clean drinking water; and our Handicrafts project provided a livelihood to 40 poor individuals.The particular strength of CR has been to focus on the people who are helped by none and to “rescue” people from the consequences of ill-health, illiteracy and poverty. This includes providing good healthcare, quality education for children and development of skills which would ultimately lead them to earn employment opportunities and a stable income.

 Calcutta Rescue supports 650 students living in the slums of Kolkata through 2 of its education centres. Calcutta Rescue provides educational support to the students from their pre- primary stage until they complete their education and start earning a living. The students are mostly first- generation learners, who come from difficult home environment and need utmost care at our centres so that learning is made joyful for them. In its effort to make learning holistic, emphasis is also on sports and music by design. For the academically unsuccessful ones, Calcutta Rescue makes provisions for vocational training so that they can earn a living via alternative avenues.Calcutta Rescue staff and volunteers work across 3 fixed primary care clinics, 3 mobile clinics, 2 primary and secondary education centres, a small employment programme for recovered patients, and facilitate WASH interventions in slums. Calcutta Rescue provides primary healthcare services to communities in 32 slum areas with a combined population of approximately 30,000 people.

Holistic development of slum residents

One third of the total population of Kolkata (4.5 million) lives in slums. Many children living in the slums and on the streets of Kolkata do not go to school. When they do, they often lack access to the necessary conditions - both material and social - to successfully start and continue their studies. They are mostly first generation learners and many are from single parent homes and many live in environments where alcohol, drugs, physical and sexual abuse are unfortunately common. 
 Our educational centres, provide not just remedial class support to the students to eliminate learning gaps, but other supports in the form of health care and nutritious and balanced diet; regular counseling, various therapy and involvement in extracurricular activities and vocational training. Above all a safe and sound environment where the slum children can sit and study. Calcutta Rescue acts as a guardian in the life of many hand holding them till they are self sufficient. 
 Enrollment of 100 students every year in formal schools Dropout rate reduced to 5% or below Students passing board exams with grade B and above.
