For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. But most people walk past them without a second glance. “Like this”, Dr. Bhagat explains, “many elders die on the roads.”Since 2003, SHEOWS (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) has rescued over 10,000 elderly people from the streets and given them a home with care and support. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. Dr. Bhagat prioritizes the health of the seniors and ensures that they receive three balanced meals a day based on their precise health requirements. Need for the fundraiserThe humanitarian mission of SHEOWS is making an impact in the area, as more and more people are being rescued and brought to Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. Canara Bank Deshpande RSETI was established in the year 2004 in Haliyal of Uttar Kannada District. The institute is co-sponsored by VRDM Trust and Canara Bank, functioning under the guidelines of the National Center for Excellence of RSETI (NACER), a monitoring cell is established under the aegis of the Ministry of Rural Development.The institute is constituted with the Board of Governors and Governing Council to monitor and guide the activities of the Institute. District Commissioner, CEO of Zilla Panchayat of Uttar Kannada District, LEAD Bank Manager, and Officials from NABARD and Canara Bank were the members. Senior Manager of Canara Bank is deputed as Director of the Institute to administrate day-to-day activities. The main objective of the Institute is to make rural youth able and capable of earning a livelihood with self-respect and creating their own identity through short-term self-employment courses thereby bringing technology training, discipline, and credit within their reach.The Institute is imparting various Self-employment Trainings free of cost along with free food and boarding facilities. Apart from Self-employment training, the Institute is actively engaged in Integrated Development at the village level. Institute with this objective of assisting rural poor families to bring them above the poverty line by ensuring an appreciable sustained level of income through the process of social mobilization training and capacity-building activities through its extension centers at Mundgod, Dandeli, Haliyal, and Joida by the formation of SHG &amp; credit linkages and promoting of livelihood activities through collective participation of the community. The institute has formed 1400 SHGs involving more than 15000 members. Desilted More than 100 tanks in Haliyal and Joida taluks of Uttarkanada District in the field of water conservation, Organized Mega Health check-ups and treatment camps for the poor community, etc.So far Institute has trained more than 22000 youth in different skill-based self-employment trainings. Out of which more than 15000 trainees were settled with self and wage employment. More than 5,000 trainees have started their ventures with Bank Finance.The institute has been awarded the Best SHG Credit Linkage Award for 2009-10 from NABARD.AWARDS:On the occasion of ‘RSETI DIWAS’ being organized by the Ministry of Rural Development, New Delhi, the Institute has been awarded First Prize under Category ‘B’ of RSETIs during 2014-15.The Institute has been awarded the ‘Second Best Performing RSETI’ for its outstanding performance during FY 2017-18. The award was presented by Shri Narendra Singh Tomar, the Hon’ble Union Minister of Rural Development, Panchayati Raj and Mines. Government of India during the Ajeevika and Koushalya Mela in Ranchi on 05.05.2018.The institute has also achieved an ‘AA’ grade monitored by MORD for the years 2013-14 to 22-23.
