For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. After undergoing years of medical treatment and therapy at Ashadeep, Preeti has seen substantial recovery. She feels glad to have finally found a safe home.Dr Anjana Goswami along with her husband Mukul, started Ashadeep Day Rehabilitation Centre four decades back and since then, the couple have rescued over 1,200 mentally ill homeless from the streets. Without a safe shelter, they are subjected to constant sexual abuse on the streets,” shares Dr Anjana while shedding light on the extreme difficulties faced by homeless mentally ill patients. The ageing population in India with terminal and incurable medical conditions is rising at a significantly high rate (60+ at the rate of 326% and 80+ at the rate of 700%) and so is the need for specialist caregiving. Until a couple of decades ago family members would be able to provide the required care. But due to urbanisation and fragmented family structure, caregiving is becoming a stressful role. Also, there is severe dearth of well-qualified professionals with the necessary skills to provide the required comfort and care to the patient. Professional caregiving is not a desirable career as well, because there is an inadequate dignity of labour and inadequate compensation in this area.  
 Our Solution: Training Academy for Caregivers (home-based care assistants). Our objective is to create a pool of specialist caregivers to address the rising caregiving needs for incurable or terminal illnesses and thereby also create employment opportunities for those who seek financial independence (specially women). We aim to train caregivers from marginalised background (urban poor) and help them upskill their caregiving capabilities, improve their digital literacy and ensure employability. 
 In  a highly populous  country with  constrained resources, aggravated by professional caregiver burnout, the strain on the healthcare system  is very high. Our health care system faces a high demand for family caregivers to take care of people suffering from terminal illnesses. In India, family members prefer to take care of their own beloved ones and statistics indicate that 80% of women carry out this responsibility, irrespective of what socio-economic condition they belong in. They tend to put their lives on hold for their caregiving responsibilities. Apart from the psycho-social and mental health implications, this impacts their ability to be financially independent and find meaning and purpose once the caregiving journey is over. They need respite, financial independence, digital literacy, knowledge on available government schemes, time and contemporary skills to find purpose, meaning and rehabilitation from the secondary trauma that they carry.  Our academy aims to rehabilitate such experienced caregivers by providing them an opportunity to get psycho-social support, financial and legal aid, an opportunity to build skills and build financial security for themselves.

Due to the 2nd wave of Covid 19, India is gripped with a healthcare crisis especially in terms of infrastructure and medical facilities. We have already lost nearly 3 lakh lives due to our ill-preparedness. COVID has taken a psycho-social and emotional toll, with feelings of anxiety and isolation being common. Several others have felt pain and loss over losing a loved one. This is a crisis that will outlast COVID, and the group that is directly impacted by the pandemic is that of family members i.e the primary caregivers of COVID affected patients. There are many ways in which these caregivers are challenged and they also need care, emotional support, understanding, easy access to information, guidance from experts and wisdom from others who have similar experiences. Caregiver Saathi was founded 3 years ago with the mission of supporting Caregivers of patients so that together we can improve the quality of their lives, their well-being and those that they care for. Currently, the problem we are trying to address is a lack of information and emotional support system for families dealing with grief and loss from COVID through a network of volunteers and experts who provide access to reliable and verified information, mental and emotional first-aid and access to grief counselling and support groups. 
 The areas where we would be working are - <ul><li>Support to families and caregivers battling COVID and post-COVID care - Our verified database https://cs-covidhelp.com/ is being extensively used by 30+ NGOs and volunteer groups.  We have a network of 500+ volunteers as of May 2021 who support hundreds of people in need across 15 cities on data verification and consolidation across various other databases. We will expand our network of volunteers to provide mental, emotional first aid and bereavement support and cover 6400 families. </li><li>Support to persons who have lost near and dear to COVID - Our network of 200 volunteers will support 6400 families by providing comprehensive hand-holding and grief counselling which are free of cost. We will also provide access to professional services of financial planning, inheritance needs and employment agencies on a need basis at a subsidised cost. </li><li>Support groups - We have created and will expand, a safe platform for persons taking care of COVID patients or dealing with loss to express their grief and support each other.</li><li>Webinars and education sessions - Being conducted for caregivers of patients and well-wishers of caregivers.</li></ul>Our services are available in Hindi and English and are open to all. 
 India has seen more than 24 million people suffer from COVID so far and there are fears that we might face the third wave as well. There is a real and urgent need to build community-based capacity in order to provide adequate support to the caregivers in the family and support family members deal with the loss with professional support. This capacity would not only help us provide support to ~7000 families in the aftermath of the current crisis but also build the infrastructure which would ensure that never again would a caregiver feel alone in the important role they play.
