“The abusers insert a candle or fingers in the vagina of children torture them. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. While Lalitha has also helped many women escape the clutches of being forced into sex work, the SPID is focused on rescuing children and giving them a better life.Sadly, many more children need to be rescued and need a loving home. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. India has over 8000 orphanages (CCIs) that house over 3 lakh children. As per government rule, every child is required to leave their CCI once they turn 18 years old. These orphan youth are called “Careleavers”. As they venture out on their own, they have to face many problems as they live independently for the first time in their lives.CLiC (Careleavers Inner Circle) is India’s first social impact start-up founded by some of these orphan youth raised in the orphanages of Rajasthan.Our mission is to create a network of careleavers and provide them with all the support they need to become self-reliant. We are developing a unique tech-based platform to create the network. We provide them with peer support, especially between the ages of 15 to 25 years. To help their smooth transition into mainstream society we provide Housing support, Education, Skill Development, Legal guidance, Financial Education, Jobs, and Psychological and emotional support. Who Are Careleavers?Children who are compelled to leave their orphanages post turning 18 years of age (as per government rule). Their journey after leaving the orphanage is often disrupted, unstable, and full of challenges. They do not have basic identity documents which makes it difficult for them to find secure housing. Most of them have not completed their education and are compelled to do odd jobs like labour, guarding, etc.They struggle to cope and are often socially excluded, go through depression and have phases of uncertainty and unemployment, and do not know whom to depend on. Additionally, they lack access to counselling on mental health, career guidance, financial literacy, legal guidance, and other resources that can help them succeed.These factors push careleavers into a life of extreme hardships and poverty. We are amongst the most vulnerable sections of the youth population, but we have immense potential and with little support, we can become resilient and independent citizens, who will not only live a better life with dignity but also give back to society.Vision:Our vision is to make every CareLeaver self-reliant.

Every year, 50000 children are compelled to leave their Orphanage in India. In Rajasthan, following 2 years, 275 children are going to leave the Orphanages. 70% Children are orphans, 20% of children have single parents, and 10% of children have relatives. At this tender age, they have to find their own way of living without any family or financial support. This can make the transition to independent living even more challenging, especially if they lack some essential items needed to get started.Some of the items that care leavers may need when they move out include a bag to carry their belongings, a lunchbox, a water bottle to stay hydrated and nourished throughout the day, and a phone to stay connected with their support networks, including their CCI. These items may seem small, but they can make a big difference in helping care leavers feel more comfortable and prepared as they begin their new lives.Careleavers are also scared at the time of exiting their orphanages. They generally try to hide their identity due to fear of non-acceptance in society. They lack the confidence to interact with outsiders and fear being judged by people due to their identity.<ul><li>Only 37% of the children have completed their school education, they get to work only as guards, waiters, etc.</li><li>52% of the children are still studying in class 8th - 10th and will have to work as laborer to survive.</li><li>Many boys and girls cannot manage life alone at this age, which makes them resort to drugs or crimes or face some abuse.</li></ul>We decided to have an Aftercare ceremony for them so as to:<ul><li>Create awareness about care leavers / aftercare. </li><li>Build confidence of careleavers as they will be interacting with many others like them at the event.</li><li>Celebrating this big milestone of their life will also motivate them and gear up for the next phase of their life.</li><li>They will get the initial support required for them to easily transition into independent living.</li></ul>We plan to organise the Aftercare Ceremony every quarter which all the careleavers going to be turning 18 in those 3 months will be invited. At the ceremony, we plan to do the following:<ul><li>Distribute the Care Kits (phone, backpack, shoes, CLiC T-Shirt, tiffin, bottle, personal hygiene kit).</li><li>Distribute a Guidebook prepared for careleavers.</li><li>Give the documents like PAN, Aadhar, and Voter ID (pre-prepared by the team) as well as get bank accounts made for them.</li><li>Enroll the careleavers in skilling courses as per our assessment.</li><li>For the careleavers wanting jobs, get them appointment letters from companies.</li><li>Enroll them in the Aftercare program of Government – Samarth Yojana (Aftercare) so that they can avail benefits of the program.</li><li>Providing care kits to care leavers can be a great way to support them as they transition out of childcare homes and into independent living. By providing these basic necessities, help care leavers feel more prepared and confident as they begin their new lives.</li></ul>We visited 33 districts of Rajasthan and had one-on-one interaction with children and Careleavers. We identified 275 children who will be turning 18 soon and going to leave their orphanage.India’s First aftercare ceremony was held in Udaipur to celebrate care leavers and provide them with the support they need to thrive in independent living. This kind of event can have a powerful impact on care leavers, helping them feel valued and supported as they begin their new lives.Care Kit Distribution:Providing care kits to care leavers can be a great way to support them as they transition out of childcare homes and into independent living.
