The extent of the struggles here was beyond my imagination. These villages had no connectivity to the outside world, and very limited access to healthcare and quality education”, says Bipin Dhane, founder of the school. Bipin, who grew up in the small town of Satara in Maharashtra, faced countless financial hardships. Despite his struggles, Bipin secured admission to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, and then went on to take up a job in Singapore. Owing to his childhood experiences Bipin was always inclined towards helping the less fortunate, and he believed in the transformative power of education. It was in 2016 that Bipin left his lucrative career abroad and moved to Majuli, to provide the children from this inaccessible river island education they were deprived of.“Whatever little money I had saved, I gave it to my parents. I had no money to start the school. It was then that villagers came together to build bamboo huts. Each family donated bamboo, wood, and whatever little they could. We are working for the children in our region (central India) who do not have access to quality education, mainly due to a lack of good schools, socio-economic conditions, or the remoteness of the region. We identify ourselves primarily as a research and resource organization and we believe that it is through human resource development and collaborations that we will be able to work most effectively for our children. We have two important programs, a teaching fellowship, intended to develop leadership/quality human resources in the region, and second, reaching more children through supporting the other organizations in the region. We are working with over 700 children every year directly through about 20 learning centers and over 35 teachers/educators. Our fellowship alumni are working with 11-12 organizations in the region, reaching over 11,000 children. Over 15-16 organizations in our region and throughout India have reached out and used pedagogy and people development resources developed at Learning Companions.
