If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. While Lalitha has also helped many women escape the clutches of being forced into sex work, the SPID is focused on rescuing children and giving them a better life.Sadly, many more children need to be rescued and need a loving home. In the dark and dingy alleys of red light areas, injustice, pain and suffering run rampant. And the worst affected are the children who grow up in red-light areas and are subjected to constant abuse and violence. “The sight of a 12-year-old girl being gang-raped by a group of men near a house l haunts me to this date. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. He has further supported over 20,000 children with a better life.Sadly, 250 of the children rescued from abuse and exploitation are HIV positive. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. Gradually more and more mothers started coming to me and asked me to take their children away, even if it was just for a couple of hours,” he further adds.The work that Girish started in his youth gradually grew to become a movement, with many more joining his cause. His NGO Snehalaya to date has transformed the lives of millions. Girish’s work is crucial for the survival and safety of vulnerable children of sex workers. Centre for Autism and other Disabilities Rehabilitation Research and Education (CADRRE) is a not-for-profit organization founded in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, in December 2016, with the aim of transforming the lives of people with Autism through best practice principles and family-centered holistic care across the lifespan. As a first step towards realizing our vision, we started our operations with CADRRE - The Autism School in September 2017 offering an intervention program in a school setting to children from the age of 2 years to 16 years by an interdisciplinary team of speech language pathologists, occupational therapists, psychologists, educators, art and music teachers, a pediatrician and an Ayurveda physician. We also offer free assessments for autism by a team comprising of a pediatrician, occupation therapist, speech language pathologist and psychologist. At the end of academic year 2019-2020, we had 36 children on our rolls; and 32 professionals and 8 support staff working with these children; our free autism assessment clinic had done around 230 detailed assessments; we have also started a pilot project on Skills Building for our older children aged between 12 to 16 years. We had also offered our services to the Government of Kerala initiatives on disabilities such as the Innovation for Youth with Disabilities program.Our operations have been supported thus far by the CSR funds of two IT companies headquartered in Trivandrum – SunTec Business Solutions and UST Global. We have also received contributions from Trivandrum International School and the Malayala Manorama. We do collect fees from the children and also offer upto 50% scholarships to deserving families our operational expenses are more than 3 times the fees we collect, so we depend heavily on funding from well-wishers.In 2019, we had enlisted the services of KPMG as part of their CSR initiative, to draw up a 5-year project plan for CADRRE. The project that worked out to be Rs 501 crores envisioned a 25 acre campus on the outskirts of Trivandrum city, offering services for autism through the lifespan, from assessment and diagnosis, early intervention, primary and secondary schooling, higher education and capacity building of professionals to research and assisted living. We have approached the Government of Kerala for allotting us land for the campus, however, the Covid-19 crisis has delayed this. The CSR funds that we were banking on for our regular operations for the 2020-21 academic year are suddenly not forthcoming and so we have to shift gears to fundraising for the smaller projects that we know we have to definitely start this year to meet the demands that we have experienced in the three years of our operations.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a neuro-developmental disorder of variable severity, is characterized by impairments in social interaction and communication, and restrictive or repetitive patterns of behavior, signs of which begin during early childhood and last throughout the lifespan. It is much more common in today’s society than we realize, with almost 1-1.5% of children falling in the autism spectrum. Though the Indian Academy of Pediatrics recommends screening for ASD at 18 and 24 months since early detection is key in helping a child with Autism live a more normal life, it is not being done due to lack of awareness and time in a busy pediatric clinic. Hence there is a substantial delay in identifying ASD.Research suggests that early intervention and autism-appropriate education at key developmental stages are required for autistic children to gain essential social skills and live more productive lives; it also helps parents learn early-on how to help their child to communicate, learn skills, form friendships and manage behaviours. But, the professionals required to provide intervention services are few compared to the number of children who need intervention. Hence many children do not get adequate and timely intervention, and the child’s developmental lag worsens. 
 Our 3-year project envisages universal screening for children below 6 years in Thiruvananthapuram district, Kerala, and training for the parents to be the primary therapists for their children.We want to increase the awareness among health professionals to identify the “red flags” of ASD and do a population screening to identify children “at risk” who would otherwise be missed in a pediatric clinic. 6 medical camps will be organized across the district, where children below 6 years of age who show symptoms suggestive of ASD based on parental report or after assessment by a health professional would be administered ASD specific screening tests. This will be followed by a detailed diagnostic assessment by a team of pediatrician, occupational therapist, speech pathologist and psychologist.Parents of the children confirmed to be autistic would be enrolled for a 3 to 4-weeks of intensive training on parent-mediated intervention delivered by an interdisciplinary team of occupational therapist, speech language pathologist, psychologist and special educator. This training will be followed by mandatory monthly 1-day follow-up sessions for a year. A medical social worker will connect to the parents regularly. Children who need more intensive training would be given additional intervention. 
 The early detection of ASD, followed by the implementation of evidence-based interdisciplinary intervention comprising of occupational therapy, speech therapy, behaviour therapy and autism-appropriate education will result in progress in all domains such as language and communication, sensory symptoms, activities of daily living, behaviours, motor skills and social skills. The sessions at the 3 to 4-weeks intensive training on parent-mediated intervention will be held for 3 hours per day - the therapist demonstrating for 2 hours and parents emulating the therapist for 1 hour. Parents will thus be empowered to train their children in all these domains and hence the progress will be faster, more sustained and will help the children to generalize their skills.3 interdisciplinary teams of professionals will be conducting the parent-mediated intervention program simultaneously; each of the 3 members of a team will train a group of 5 parents each. Thus, 45 children will be undergoing the intervention program at any point. Assuming we will be able to do 10 such sessions of the 3-week program in a year, 450 children will benefit from the program every year for the project duration of 3 years.
