For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. But most people walk past them without a second glance. “Like this”, Dr. Bhagat explains, “many elders die on the roads.”Since 2003, SHEOWS (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) has rescued over 10,000 elderly people from the streets and given them a home with care and support. “What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. The Malsawm Initiative (A school for Children with Special Needs) a project by Centre for Community Initiative is a Centre-based unit under Malsawm Ability Resource Centre (MARC). The first of its kind school in the district, working towards education for special needs children. The school has up to Class VI standard and increases every year. More than 100 students could join our regular day school where students are placed according to their abilities in the Play Group, Pre-Academic group, Class I – Class VI and Pre-Vocational Group. The Malsawm Initiative School (TMI) currently accommodates 250 students with 18 staff. Home based care services were provided to more than 50 PwDs which limit their movement outside. In the school, Children with disabilities between 0-8 years are provided appropriate services according to their needs in the Early Intervention Unit.  Our issue is not being able to provide physical space for all the Children with disabilities between 0-8 years. The school is not even adequate to cater to the needs of the current set of beneficiaries, and therefore it is impossible to admit new beneficiaries despite wanting to enrol as many children as we can. We have been interchangeably using different rooms for class, therapy, vocational training, early intervention due to constraints and small sizes of the rooms. We also aim to provide informal and formal education along with different services and for that we need support material assistance for a proper inclusive education and development. We have made materials through scraps which don't last long and are not that effective. Lack of access to opportunities, including educational opportunities, play a vital role in limiting the development of children with seeing disability and eventually act as a major barrier to their participation in socio- economic process. However, given the ever-increasing number of children each year and considering the fact that the present school lacks space to accommodate them, Centre for Community Initiative (CCI) is unable to take all the children under the TMI school. And as we are a grassroot organization supported with empathy by the community in the area, we are not in a position to tackle the problem by ourselves as people mainly here are farming with basic income. While we have a story to tell of each individual student, we would like to highlight a story or two that make us believe that change is possible. STORY 1NEMLUNMAWI - The Beginning:Nemlunmawi, 5 years old, a remarkable child with Cerebral Palsy, has defied all odds and surpassed expectations in her development journey. Cerebral Palsy, a neurological disorder that affects a child's movement, motor skills, and muscle tone, has presented numerous challenges for Mawi. In January 2022, she took a leap of faith and enrolled at the prestigious Early Intervention unit under the Malsawm Ability Resource Centre in Pearsonmun, Lamka. This decision marked the beginning of an extraordinary transformation. Under the guidance of dedicated educators and therapists, Mawi embarked on a path of special education and therapy.&nbsp;Though the road was not always smooth, with numerous bumps and falls along the way, she never lost her determination.&nbsp;Overcoming the Barrier:First, Mawi conquered the milestone of standing with the support of a window bar. But she didn't stop there. In the following month, she amazed everyone by standing without any support for a remarkable 3 to 4 seconds. And then, in yet another month, she achieved the seemingly impossible - standing completely on her own! It was a moment of pure joy and celebration.But Mawi's progress didn't end there. She has shown tremendous improvement both academically and physically. She can now confidently identify both upper and lower case alphabets, effortlessly read simple words, and even walk independently from her classroom to the playground. This achievement is particularly noteworthy as the school corridor presents a tactile floor, which used to pose a significant challenge for her. But guess what? Mawi conquered that obstacle too! Even when she stumbles and falls, Mawi possesses an unwavering spirit. She can now pick herself up without any assistance, a feat that was once considered impossible for her. Her resilience and determination are truly awe-inspiring.Nemlunmawi's journey is a testament to the power of early intervention and the unwavering support of a dedicated team which includes her family. Her story is a beacon of hope for all those facing similar challenges. With each milestone she conquers, Mawi proves that anything is possible with the right mindset and determination. STORY 2:THANGSUANMUAN - The Beginning:Thangsuanmuan, a 7-year-old child with hearing impairment, has faced numerous challenges in expressing his needs. Being a shy boy, it has been particularly difficult for him. However, his life took a positive turn when he enrolled at the Home Base Care unit under the Malsawm Ability Resource Centre in February 2022. The services provided at his home have been invaluable, and this year, in 2023, he was enrolled at The Malsawm Initiative, A school for children with special needs.Overcoming the Barrier:The progress Thangsuanmuan has made is truly remarkable and has exceeded all expectations. Not only has he learnt sign language, alphabets, days of the week, and colors, but he has also surprised everyone by expressing himself and reading aloud using his own voice. This unexpected development has brought immense joy and excitement to everyone involved in his education.Furthermore, Thangsuanmuan has made significant strides in his socialization skills. Initially, making friends was a challenge for him, but he has now formed close bonds with Thangkhanlun, Liankhrist, and Ginmuansang. Witnessing this transformation has been nothing short of incredible, and it is a testament to Thangsuanmuan's determination and the support he has received from his teachers and peers.Thangsuanmuan's ability to express his needs using both sign language and speech is a testament to his hard work and the effectiveness of the educational programs he has been a part of. It is truly heartwarming to see him overcome his initial struggles and thrive in his learning environment.

Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) have long been removed from the mainstream, without any services, care, or attention in our district called Churachandpur, Manipur. This taboo has been culturally internalized and accepted into the social structure, oppressing PwDs regardless of their various abilities. In 2005, the founding director of CCI was blessed with a baby boy (L) Ginmalsawm, a firstborn, who was later found to have Optic Nerve Atrophy since birth, which made him visually impaired. In the process of finding the console, they learned that there was no single organisation to support PwDs in the district, not to even mention the state. It has been the experience of the hill district that the Persons with Disabilities community live in desperation, a frustration compounded by a sense of worthlessness and humiliation. This has been an eye-opener for CCI. Therefore, against all odds, parents of such PwDs were identified, mobilized, and encouraged to join hands in taking up the initiative of The Malsawm Initiatives: A School for Children with special needs (TMI). TMI is still at its nascent stage and function with basic facilities by constantly struggled to manage the initiative through well-wishers, local fundraising and few teacher support through from various donor. 
 The Malsawm Initiatives (TMI): A School for Children with special needs was established purely based on the irrefutable demand conveniently ignored for generations.Though TMI highly desired to provide maximum services with inclusive equal opportunity for all, it presently has an accommodation capacity only for 25 children. Therefore, the organization has procured some land and is incorporating a wider range of services like open-door service, early intervention, and home-based and village-based rehabilitation.CCI works at three layers. i.	CCI provides inclusive education and rehabilitative support to PwD children. ii.	It builds capacities of parents, siblings, family members of PwDs, staffs of CCI, etc. iii.	It sensitizes, mobilizes and advocates for building inclusive spaces with schools, health care centers, churches, other institutions. CCI mobilizes parents and has formed them into a group called Parents Support Group (PSG) who emerged as a strong advocacy body in Churachandpur district. Besides all the above supports, CCI believes that building capacities of their siblings is the most vital and effective approach to bringing sustainable intervention. 
 TMI is strongly determined in enabling inabilities and enhancing capacities of persons with disabilities and continue to contribute to making the world more friendly for persons with disabilities. Its impact continues to be visible and TMI believes that the initiative will continue to grow and sustain to a point where one day, it with be managed by the very contribution and participation of its students of today.TMI organizes advocacy, activism, and other activities for empowerment and awareness on disability in the district with limited available resources. Till date, parents, siblings, and family members are empowered with basic required communication skills to support them to communication between students with hearing/speech impairment and parents/siblings/staffs has been greatly improved or made possible.

 Children with disabilities between 0-8 years are provided appropriate services according to their needs in the Early Intervention Unit. Graduated students from this Unit joined regular classes at TMI. So, it is very important for children with disabilities start their school by going through Early Intervention class first. When the construction for the unit is done, the room will be equipped with all the necessary infrastructures required for the class. Also, awareness program will be facilitated among the community, parents and the children about the importance and necessity of Early Intervention in the school. 
 We wish to enhance holistic development opportunities for children so that in the future, the graduated students from this Unit can join regular classes at TMI. In this way, they will not miss out anything and have access to quality education which will enable them to enhance their potential for effective participation in the socio-economic process. On completion, we wish to take in all the kids who see an increase in the intake of Early Intervention students with a scope of 100 per annum. Not only that, we want to provide guidance and counselling to differently abled individuals. We really hope that more people will become aware about not only the school but also about the Early Intervention Unit.Early Intervention of the children is important not only to facilitate their all-round development and help them to lead a dignified and independent life, but also to rid their parents of the psychological burden of having a child with special needs.

Support Early Intervention Unit for Children with Special Needs - The Malsawm Initiative

The ongoing crisis in Manipur since May 3, 2023 rendered many homeless. Many villages have been burned down and more than 90 people have lost their lives. Currently, more than 30000 people are taking shelter in different places all over Manipur. There is an acute shortage of daily essentials like food, medicine, drinking water etc. which have affected ordinary civilians severely. Shelter camps are divided into two categories: The first category is those planning to move from one District to another as soon as the situation improves. Most of these internally displaced people get their shelter and protection at 7 different security personnel and Army or Security stations. Rations and daily essential needs are provided by the security/ government for the time being. However, once they move out from these camps, they will be homeless. The second category are locals who seek shelter in camps due to danger or threats to their lives. They camp themselves in schools, community halls or temporary shelters run by CSO/NGOs. They provide their daily needs including clothing, medicines, and rations at their own capacity by raising resources amongst the community. CCI also shelters 26 people from 7 families at Malsawm Ability Resource Centre, Pearsonmun. 
 Phase I: Relief1. Provide space for temporary shelter camp at our school/MARC, Pearsonmun and manage it by way of providing essential needs, medicine, clothings, etc.2. Provide rations, daily essential, drinking water and clothing's to other 26 camps located within Churachandpur in consultation with CSOs.Requirements:1. Rice – For 3000 people for 1 month2. Cereals/pulses – Dal, oil, salt, potatoes, onion, etc. for 3000 families3. Clothing 4. Utensils5. Medicine6. PTSD CounsellingPhase II: ResettlementSupport will be provided based on base-line survey during Phase-I and to include people who can no longer stay in their previous District.1. Support in rebuilding houses and villages when the atmosphere is conducive2. Provide with in collecting of house-hold needs3. Provide at least 200 families in resettlement of their livelihood based on their needsRequirements:1. Rebuilding houses with low cost and locally available materials2. Mattress and beddings3. Support in medical treatment to those injured during the clash4. Support sustainable livelihood to those willing to settle in the district and who lost job within the district for more than 6 months. 
 Provide immediate relief to at least 3000 families. Provide support in rebuilding houses and villages for at least 100 families.
