 Battle of the Buffet offers NGOs in Tamil Nadu a common platform to make use of high class event to raise fund without spending a penny. The event facilitates collective positive change for the greater good - an evening that provides food for the mind, body, soul and spirit. BoB 2020 is fresh with new possibilities. We are moving to a virtual platform to host the event to ensure safety and protection of donors during the COVID crisis. This year more than 50 NGOs are participating representing various causes across Tamil Nadu. 
 Since its inception in 2009 this mega fundraising event has raised close to Rs. 30 crores, benefiting hundreds of NGOs. The Problem:There are serious cases of malnourishment and nutritional deficiencies among women of reproductive age, adolescents, and children in the Kurumba tribal hamlets of the Nilgiris. Among the children (0-6 years) there is a high prevalence of stunting and wasting, which in turn leads to low immunity levels, and poor learning outcomes. Among adolescents, anemia is a serious issue. This is mainly due to their reduced access to forest produce and human-wildlife conflict, which has made them more dependent on Public Distribution System and the market. This causes a lack of diet diversity and multiple nutritional deficiencies that hinder their growth. Coupled with the lack of health literacy at the community level and the education system i.e., the school level, this makes it difficult for them to get out of the intergenerational cycle of malnourishment 
 Our Solution: We support the tribal households to implement sustainable intervention programs and educate/train them on various practices.<ol><li>In the area of Nutrition, we are providing expectant and lactating mothers as well as all children, with a hot, cooked nutritious lunch and supplements that not only support their nutrition but also teach them what a good diet is, and what it can do for them and their children.</li><li>For all the households, we are providing dry millet-rich rations and recipes that will enable them to cook healthy and tasty meals and support them to go back to their own traditional foods which are rich in nutrients.</li><li>A Kitchen Garden Program enables the households to grow their own produce in their own small spaces near their house, either on the ground or in bags, which in turn enables them to be self-sufficient and provides them with nutrition security.</li><li>In the area of healthcare, we are using a health literacy module that educates the students and the community stakeholders on basic health and hygiene concepts like sanitation, reproductive health, nutrition/balanced diet, etc.</li><li>We seek to influence individual lifestyle decisions and community awareness of the determinants of health and encourage individual and community actions.</li></ol> 
 The Impact:<ul><li>In the first four months of our program itself, we have seen health parameters improved by 65%.</li><li>Two 5-year old boys, who were stunted and had shown no growth for two years, have now shown a turnaround and recorded a growth in height, weight, and activity levels.</li><li>Through our nutritional supplements to expectant and lactating mothers, we have seen high-risk expectant mothers deliver healthy babies.</li><li>We are seeing the households achieve improved diet diversity and nutrient intake.</li></ul>

ASTITVA - Pulling Tribal Women & Children Out of Malnutrition

The social sector has a lot of successes and challenges. While the media mostly pays attention to sensitive issues, there is a need to showcase the work of the grassroot workers and social entrepreneurs. Advertorials is the present trend in print media, and this is a bane for NGOs and social entrepreneurs who do not believe in paying a fee to gain visibility.In order to bridge the gap, a monthly tabloid called ‘Conversations Today’ was launched by CSIM in 2010 and registered with RNI in 2013. This is the first print tabloid in India which focuses exclusively on social issues. This publication is circulated amongst corporates and educational institutions across India. Every year the book is compiled and published as ‘Unsung Beacons’. We have published 8 volumes so far. The reason for seeking funding is to continue promoting the work of unsung social workers and social entrepreneurs. Printing (paper cost) is sponsored by New Indian Express. Funds are required to meet the costs for printing, payment for content writers, editors and designers and for distribution. 
 Centre for Social Initiative and Management (CSIM), is a project of Manava Seva Dharma Samvardhani Trust (MSDS) which was established in 1999. CSIM is a pioneer in offering social entrepreneurship training programs in India that ensure and enhance the quality of delivery in social change agents. CSIM pursues this mission by offering a wide range of training programs that advocate the principles and practices of social entrepreneurship. CSIM operates from its headquarters at Chennai and has branches in Mumbai, Hyderabad, and Bangalore. We have recently established a rural centre at Bhopal. CSIM has been offering modules on social entrepreneurship in city colleges and is also engaged in social accounting and audit through SAN, India - a project of MSDS. 
 While there is information available on social sciences and and there are case studies on social workers, there is no document available on social entrepreneurship and their case studies per se.Conversations Today reaches a vast section of the student community in city colleges, especially those who are pursuing social sciences or social work degrees. It is also circulated widely in the corporate sector and development sector. Students of leading institutions like Stella Maris, MSSW, and Loyola College use the tabloid as a reference material and the featured articles serve as case studies. Many social entrepreneurs have subscribed to this paper and we have readers across the globe. It is a good tool for communicating the work of the changemakers across our country and we have articles contributed by Social Audit Network, UK, and Singapore International Foundation as well.
