“I used to be sexually abused repeatedly, and when I screamed in pain, they hit and threatened me with more violence,” says Priya (name changed), a rescued child sex worker. Priya was abducted by traffickers and sold into a red-light area house before she was rescued by Guria led by Manju. For over two decades, Manju has been rescuing young girls forced into prostitution across the country. She has been shaken to the core seeing some of the most horrifying crimes that young girls have to undergo. “You can’t imagine the state of girls forced into sex work. The girls are given electric shocks and burnt with cigarette butts just to get kicks out of it. And if they get pregnant, the "owners" kick them repeatedly in the womb so that the child inside dies…If you want to see hell, it is here on this planet where young girls are sexually abused,” says Manju.Manju needs your help to rescue more young girls from forced prostitution and reunite them with their families. Donate now.Guria’s work over the yearsBased out of Varanasi, inarguably the holiest place in India, Manju and her organisation Guria, fights the sexual exploitation of girls, especially minors, by taking on the traffickers head-on, and rescuing and rehabilitating them.Started in 1993, Guria has rescued over 5500 persons from slavery, sex trafficking, and child prostitution so far. It has also been instrumental in shutting down hundreds of places that housed trafficked girls and putting scores of traffickers out of business and in jail.For instance, in 2005, a Guria-led rescue operation in Varanasi's red-light area led to the freeing of 49 women and girls, including minors. Many of them were kept against their will. Some of the traffickers were also arrested and tried. Since then, Guria has rescued thousands of young girls.Manju and her husband, Ajeet Singh began rescuing girls from Varanasi’s red-light areas and then working to stop the sex-trafficking of young girls within Uttar Pradesh and outside. The organisation’s aim is to eliminate the sex trafficking of women, especially minor girls, end second-generation prostitution and child prostitution, and rehabilitate women and girls who are rescued from the trade. Manju has faced violent backlash from the traffickers and other vested interests, but it has not deterred her from carrying on rescuing young girls from trafficking. Rescue and rehabilitationBesides rescuing girls trafficked for sex, mostly from low-income families, from across the country, Guria fights on their behalf in courts and also provides education, food, vocational training, and other facilities until they are united with their families. But because of a lack of funds, Guria is finding it difficult to rescue more girls and also take care of them once they are away from the clutches of the traffickers. Take the case of Sameena (name changed), who was abducted from Uttar Pradesh all the way to Telangana. Guria took it upon itself to rescue the girl with the help of its own work and also the authorities. After months of rehabilitation, Sameena went back to her family and even completed her education. A period or menstruation is a natural, biological process of the female body. Centre for Social Service is an NGO at Hyderabad, India. It was started in 2004 by Mrs. Vijaya Lakshmi Vemuri. CSS works towards Empowering orphan and underprivileged girls through Education and livelihood skills training. CSS has three major projects in Hyderabad-1st is a Residential Project. Under this orphan and underprivileged girls are provided safe and secure accommodation with all basic amenities and education. CSS girls are studying in various courses like Commerce, Science, Engineering, MBA etc. So far 185 girls have passed out of CSS. Some of them are working in MNCs like Deloitte, TATA, some are married and well settled in their lives. And a few of them have joined as teachers in CSS School. Two girls have completed their MS in USA and are now working there. And one girl is working in Saudi Arabia. Two girls are now doing their MS in USA.CSS 2nd project is Free English Medium School for socially and economically underprivileged girls. The School has classes from Nursery to 10th grade. 550 students are getting free education in the School. Most of the students are 1st generation school goers in their families and their parents are uneducated. So the students heavily rely on the School for their educational needs. The School has all the necessary infrastructure and well-trained staff. So far four batches of students have passed out of the School after finishing their 10th grade. CSS third project is Dr. Lakshmi Ganga Swayam Sakthi's project. Under this program, women in distress situations who come to CSS are provided temporary shelter, counseled and helped to cope with their problems. A few of these women have been absorbed into CSS itself as residential staff. Free training in tailoring, Fabric painting, Block printing, Hand embroidery etc. are conducted to help women in economic need to become self-sufficient.

Approximately 50 percent of India's population is women and empowering them is vital for India's overall development. Women's basic rights have to be met, of which the Right to education and the Right to live in a safe and protected environment is very crucial. Poverty and gender-based discrimination have posed challenges for girls in both aspects. Girls' education is a strategic development priority. Recent national data reveals that the dropout rate of girls at the elementary level is 4.10% and 16.88% at the Secondary level. Due to extreme taboos, safety concerns, less accessibility to schools, lack of affordable sanitary napkins, absence of separate toilets and poor school infrastructure, girls drop out before completing their schooling. Girl-child education is instrumental in shaping our society towards progress. Educated women can make decisions for themselves, raise the standard of living of their families, generate employment opportunities and reform society as a whole. An all-out effort in bringing about a change in the mindset towards girl child education in India is the need of the hour.

CSS strongly believes that education should be accessible to all irrespective of caste, creed, gender and economic disparities. Towards this end CSS runs two major projects in Hyderabad. <ul><li>Residential project for orphan and underprivileged girls where they are provided safe and secured shelter with all basic amenities and Education</li><li>Free English Medium School for socially and economically underprivileged girls.  </li></ul>Over the past 17 years, CSS has successfully developed the necessary infrastructure for both the projects. <ul><li>The Residential project is housed in a well-planned two-floor building with all amenities required for the stay and education of all the residential girls.</li><li>The School project is running in a three floor building with all amenities like computer lab, library etc required for the education of all the students.</li></ul>With the infrastructure in place, CSS has now brought stability to both the projects. CSS now aims to provide -<ul><li>Free Boarding and higher education to 75 Residential girls in it's Home each year</li><li>Free Education upto High school for 550 students in it's School each year.</li></ul> 
 Over the past 17 years, CSS efforts to educate and empower orphan and underprivileged girls have been very successful.<ul><li>185 girls have passed out of CSS Home, who are now successfully managing their professional as well as personal lives. Each one a standing example of how education can bring about a change for the better even in debilitating circumstances. 2 girls finished their Masters in USA and are working there and 2 girls are pursuing MS in USA proving given a chance sky is the limit for an achiever.</li><li>Most of the students in the School are first-generation School goers in their families and their parents are uneducated. Despite a strong gender bias in the community, repeated counseling of parents and availability of free education has resulted in 4 batches of students passing out of the School after finishing their 10th Board Exams and helped them embarked on the path to higher education.</li><li>The food expense of all the residential girls and staff is a major component of the expenditure of the Residential project. Any support in this area will ensure the smooth running of the Home and the project.</li><li>Teachers are an integral part of the School and any help with meeting with the salary expenditure of the teachers will directly impact the education of all the students in the School.</li></ul>
