“What will happen to them after me? I am 80+. I spend sleepless nights,” worries ex-Air Force officer, Group Captain AC Barua while talking about the future of the 28 destitute women under his care. “They have nobody in this world, sometimes they don’t remember their own names. They are absolutely alone,” he informs us as he goes from one room to the other meeting all the women who live at Seneh, the only home where they are loved and taken care of. After fighting for his country all his life, this octogenarian is now fighting to rescue homeless and abandoned women from dying on the streets. But he cannot do it alone. “Everyday I keep on getting calls from here and there. ‘Oh! there’s a woman lying here. Can you help?’ But I don’t dare to go and help because I don’t have the money. I don’t have the resources, our resources are very limited,” explains Gr. Capt. Many times these are women with mental health conditions and considered being a witch due to superstitious beliefs and beaten up as a result. They are victims of domestic abuse or widow mothers who are considered to be a burden on the family. Group Captain Barua has not only rescued them from critical conditions, he has provided them with urgent medical care, food and above all, a free safe shelter where they can live with love and care. Among these residents is Sarala Kalita who fled to save herself from the tortures of her alcoholic husband only to face neglect and trauma from her brothers- and sisters-in-law. “Both my brothers and their wives urged my father to leave me somewhere as they didn’t want to take care of me anymore. One day my brother’s wife didn’t even let me have food at home. She just wanted me to leave and go away. So that’s why, my father got in touch with Seneh through someone, and handed me over to Sir to take care of me,” says Sarita who has found joy in living at Seneh. “Coming to Seneh, it felt like I got a new life altogether. Sir has given me a harmonium. I love singing. It makes me forget everything and takes me to someplace else entirely,” she adds. More women like Sarala can find their way to a loving home like Seneh. All they need is a little bit of your kindness. “It is difficult to make both ends meet”To sustain their daily expenditure, Capt Barua needs approx ₹3 lakh a month and arranging the funds is a mammoth challenge for the NGO. “Our expenses are growing day by day. Residents are growing older, their sicknesses are increasing. At times we have to give them special food. They require more care so we have to get more employees. About half of them require leading around, 1-2 has to be fed also. This disconnect is amplified for people living in and around our wildlife reserves who regularly face conflicts with wildlife resulting in crops, livestock, and property damage. Over the years, our studies have revealed that children in high-conflict villages are often deeply affected and potentially hold negative views of the wildlife. 
 Wild Shaale (Shaale means ‘school’ in Kannada) is a unique environmental and conservation education program that aims to foster interest and build awareness in rural children living in proximity to wildlife.Wild Shaale is a first-of-its-kind scientifically-conceived conservation-education program. It focuses on children between the ages of 10 and 13 who live around wildlife reserves. We have created content to teach children about their local wildlife and environment. This also includes some local conservation issues to improve their knowledge, empathy, and conservation attitudes.Our sessions incorporate various learning styles (art activities, role play, story-telling, games, and presentations). We provide all the materials to ensure that every school is ensured equal resources.We believe that Wild Shaale is a fundamental building block to involving children in conserving India’s wildlife and wild places. They play an increasingly important role in influencing perceptions, attitudes and tolerance towards wildlife. 
 Globally, environmental-and-conservation education is instrumental in increasing people’s awareness, changing perceptions and attitudes, and encouraging public support for wildlife.Wild Shaale is designed to educate children on coexisting with wildlife and coping with loss. Our implementation and evaluation approach provides insights into the best-designed practices for conservation-education programs. Since 2018, we have reached 407 schools and 20,350 children around 8 wildlife reserves in Karnataka, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh.The Wild Shaale curriculum is customisable to different regions, highlighting unique animals, plants and ecosystems. Wild Shaale - Transforming Conservation Education for Children Living Around India's Parks

India is a mega diversity country.  Our country is a high-priority region for global wildlife conservation efforts especially related to charismatic and conflict-prone megafauna such as the tigers, elephants and leopards. Successful conservation efforts by Indian government and NGOs have resulted in rebounding animal populations around many of India’s wildlife reserves. However, millions of people living in and around these wildlife reserves experience high levels of human-wildlife conflict (HWC).More than 80,000 human-wildlife conflict incidents are reported in India with ex-gratia compensation payments from the government totalling almost 38 crore rupees per year. Incidents of HWC include crop loss and property damage (94.1%), livestock predation (5.6%), occasionally human injury (0.3%), and loss of human life (0.02%). Yet, it is important to note that hundreds of thousands of conflict incidents remain unreported and uncompensated. While there is some inherent tolerance for losses in these communities, repeated conflicts may lead to the retaliatory killing of wildlife. 
 Wild Seve (Seve, in Kannada, means ‘to serve’) was developed by Dr. Krithi K. Karanth at the Centre for Wildlife Studies after decades of research on the complexities of human-wildlife interactions. The research found that compensation schemes play a key role in lowering retaliation and fostering tolerance toward wildlife.Wild Seve provides a toll-free number serving 600 village settlements and ½ million people around two wildlife reserves in Karnataka. Local residents call a toll-free helpline to report a human-wildlife conflict incident. Our field staff arrive at the incident location, assess the damage, and help families file and track ex-gratia compensation claims with the government. Our field assistants belong to the local communities and this has built enormous trust with the people. Our mobile technology-based platform bridges the gap between people and the government. Through the Wild Seve program we assist the most vulnerable people living adjacent to wildlife reserves to recoup losses of crops, livestock, property damage, and injury. For families with repeated incidents of livestock loss, we have built 60 predator-proof sheds till date which has mitigated livestock loss. 
 Wild Seve offers a rare opportunity to help people directly affected by human-wildlife, lower retaliation against wildlife and foster tolerance in people. Through our committed field assistants, the program addresses the delays in ex-gratia payments, inability to navigate the government claims process, and reduces the transactional costs faced by the poorest of people.  This program has been instrumental in changing attitudes towards wildlife around Bandipur and Nagarahole National Parks, Karnataka. As of September 2021, we have responded to over 18,500 claims, and facilitated ex-gratia payments of over INR 62,724,228/- (USD $836,100/-) from the Government. Wild Seve program plans to expand to multiple new wildlife reserves in Karnataka. Our long term goal is to ensure the persistence of India's conflict-prone wildlife, by increasing awareness, supporting livelihoods, and fostering tolerance among people.

Wild Seve - Empowering People and Conserving Wildlife Around India's Parks

Our world is facing an unprecedented health emergency with the COVID-19 outbreak. The current pandemic has exposed the fragility of our public health systems and neglect of our most vulnerable communities’. Along with COVID-19, almost 75% of all emerging diseases in the 21st century have an origin traceable to wild animals. Those most likely to bear the brunt of these emerging diseases are therefore the communities living in and around wildlife reserves. In India, such communities are already marginalised. They lack access to proper health care, information, education and resources! Most importantly, they lack awareness. After all, how can they prevent something that they don’t understand? 
 Wild Surakshe (Safety) is a public safety and community engagement program focusing on preventing the spread of many zoontics including COVID-19 and stopping future disease outbreaks. Our program will assist communities living in and around wildlife reserves to understand and combat zoonotic diseases and human-wildlife conflict incidents. We will build collaborative networks to aid these communities and access government aid, emergency service providers, and healthcare. 
 Wild Surakshe connects and collaborates with communities isolated. We plan to reach 500 vulnerable villages surrounding wildlife reserves and engage people, village panchayats, government staff and community organisations. Over the next year, in Karnataka, our initiative will have widespread impact at the grass-root level by focusing on people living close to 23 wildlife reserves across Western Ghats. With your support we want to expand this program to people living in and around wildlife reserves in Maharashtra, Goa, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

Wild Surakshe - Building Community Resilience Against Disease Outbreaks in the Western Ghats

Leopards are beautiful, mysterious and highly intelligent creatures. In the Himalayan state of Himachal Pradesh, people view them as neighbours with whom they can negotiate space. Just like any human neighbour, these wild amber-eyed neighbour are not always easy to live with. Leopards, in many cases, kill livestock and even pets. Approximately 30 people are injured and three people die due to leopards in Himachal every year. Almost 50% of the leopards that die in Hamirpur, a district in Himachal, are due to human-caused mortalities such as hunting, getting stuck in snares meant for wild boar/hare and retaliatory killing. There is also an eroding trend in the culture of acceptance of this animal among the current generation. 
 <ul><li>Using the leopards and people of Himachal Pradesh state as a case study, Shweta’s research will aim to understand the current state of attacks on people by leopards. An innovative apUnderstand how people live with leopards: conduct interviews to understand how Himachali people view living with leopards. We will be talking to Government officials, media personnel, village panchayats, local community, students and urban residents. </li><li>Document leopard movement in human areas: Since leopards are nocturnal creatures, we hardly see them, let alone get to understand their movements. Stationary motion-sensing cameras will be placed on pathways, house backyards, agricultural fields and roads to photo capture leopard movement. This will help us understand the time they use these areas, frequency of use and their preferred localities.</li><li>Recommend better policy: We will communicate recommendations to the Government of Himachal Pradesh based on this project in the form of a policy input document to improve leopard management in the state.</li></ul> 
 This project will help the people of Himachal live safely with the leopards. If basic human safety is ensured, leopards and people can co-exist in relative harmony. Using innovative scientific methods, our presence and connections in the landscape, an environment of coexistence can be encouraged. If all stakeholders of the leopard are heard and represented in future management measures, conservation of leopards can be assured.
