For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. “I used to be sexually abused repeatedly, and when I screamed in pain, they hit and threatened me with more violence,” says Priya (name changed), a rescued child sex worker. Priya was abducted by traffickers and sold into a red-light area house before she was rescued by Guria led by Manju. For over two decades, Manju has been rescuing young girls forced into prostitution across the country. She has been shaken to the core seeing some of the most horrifying crimes that young girls have to undergo. “You can’t imagine the state of girls forced into sex work. The girls are given electric shocks and burnt with cigarette butts just to get kicks out of it. And if they get pregnant, the "owners" kick them repeatedly in the womb so that the child inside dies…If you want to see hell, it is here on this planet where young girls are sexually abused,” says Manju.Manju needs your help to rescue more young girls from forced prostitution and reunite them with their families. Donate now.Guria’s work over the yearsBased out of Varanasi, inarguably the holiest place in India, Manju and her organisation Guria, fights the sexual exploitation of girls, especially minors, by taking on the traffickers head-on, and rescuing and rehabilitating them.Started in 1993, Guria has rescued over 5500 persons from slavery, sex trafficking, and child prostitution so far. It has also been instrumental in shutting down hundreds of places that housed trafficked girls and putting scores of traffickers out of business and in jail.For instance, in 2005, a Guria-led rescue operation in Varanasi's red-light area led to the freeing of 49 women and girls, including minors. Many of them were kept against their will. Some of the traffickers were also arrested and tried. Since then, Guria has rescued thousands of young girls.Manju and her husband, Ajeet Singh began rescuing girls from Varanasi’s red-light areas and then working to stop the sex-trafficking of young girls within Uttar Pradesh and outside. The organisation’s aim is to eliminate the sex trafficking of women, especially minor girls, end second-generation prostitution and child prostitution, and rehabilitate women and girls who are rescued from the trade. Manju has faced violent backlash from the traffickers and other vested interests, but it has not deterred her from carrying on rescuing young girls from trafficking. Rescue and rehabilitationBesides rescuing girls trafficked for sex, mostly from low-income families, from across the country, Guria fights on their behalf in courts and also provides education, food, vocational training, and other facilities until they are united with their families. But because of a lack of funds, Guria is finding it difficult to rescue more girls and also take care of them once they are away from the clutches of the traffickers. Take the case of Sameena (name changed), who was abducted from Uttar Pradesh all the way to Telangana. Guria took it upon itself to rescue the girl with the help of its own work and also the authorities. After months of rehabilitation, Sameena went back to her family and even completed her education. Centre for Youth and Social Development (CYSD), a non-government and non-profit organization, has been working towards improving the quality of lives of tribal and rural poor in Odisha, with primary focus on eradicating extreme poverty and hunger, ensuring social inclusion and justice, good governance and citizen’s right, helping communities identify and initiate development measures, providing training and other capacity-building support to pro-poor organizations and individuals, and carrying out research and advocacy in favour of the under privileged people especially the tribals. CYSD also joins hands with the special initiatives taken up by the government, civil society and communities to address inequality both in number and intensity.Vision: An equitable society where women and men can freely realize their full potential, fulfil their rights and responsibilities and lead their life with dignity and self-respect.Mission: To enable marginalized women, men and children to improve their quality of life. To this end, CYSD uses issue based research to influence policies from a pro-poor and rights based perspective. It also works to ensure transparent, gender sensitive, accountable and democratic governance by building the capacities of people and organizations in participatory planning.Outreach : CYSD reaches out to 18 lakh population living in more than 8500 villages in 106 blocks of 12 districts of Odisha through direct project interventions. The pilots of CYSD including promotion of Women Self-Help Groups in 1980’s; watershed development in 1990’s; agro-forestry and collective farming in 2000’s have become mainstream activities by several CSOs and the Government.ii)       Fostering Participatory GovernanceCYSD strives to improve the governance system that truly represents the voice of the poor. The efforts have been focused towards strengthening local governance institutions, facilitating citizen-led monitoring and processes for ensuring community rights over food, natural resources and information by using legal space offered by progressive acts like Right to Food, Right to Education, Right to Information, Forest Rights Act, Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) etc. Under gendered approach to development, the key interventions include gender budgeting, development of women leadership, capacity building of women PRI representatives on their roles and responsibilities, promotion of education among the girls, prohibition of girl child marriage and addressing gender-based violence.The organisation so far has facilitated and experienced use of different social accountability tools including Community Score Card and Citizen Report Card; community monitoring of Public Distribution System (PDS), Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS), education and maternal health; social audit of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS); budget analysis and budget tracking. It has successfully accomplished concurrent monitoring of Mid Day Meal (MDM) and Social Impact Assessment of different development projects assigned by the Government of Odisha.iii)  Reducing disaster vulnerability and addressing climate change concernsThe organization has an identity as a strong regional player in disaster preparedness, response and enhances its effort towards innovating climate change adaptation practices and research. At the same time the organisation has also built up its understanding and responded to mitigation issues. In this process CYSD has a great learning from the experiences in responding to Super Cyclone 1999, Phailin in 2013, Hudhud in 2014, Titli in 2018 and Fani in 2019 in Odisha in terms of relief, rehabilitation and restoration activities undertaken in collaboration with government, civil society and the private sector.iv)      Advocating for Responsive StateCYSD has taken initiatives to make the State responsive to the inclusive development agenda. In this regard, regular consultations have been organized in the State under the banner of Odisha Development Initiative; bringing the civil society, government, academia, research institutions and private sector together and deliberating upon the development issues and building synergy among different actors to take the development agenda forward.Systems and ProcessesThe organisation is guided by certain policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). The policies include: HR, Gender, Child Protection, Procurement, Accounts, IT and Communication. Besides, there is a robust monitoring, evaluation and knowledge management system which attributes to its quality of programmes. The state Government has worked smartly and in a timely manner to control the epidemic and to support its citizens. The government has come up with various services which will assist its citizen’s financial and physical health, however lot of our citizens are not aware of these entitlements. 
 CYSD intends to support the citizens in their physical, emotional and financial health through a virtual Citizen Support Centre, run by a team of care givers and women volunteers for coming 3 months. Lessening Citizenry Anxieties triggered by COVID-19 Pandemic

While the entire humanity has been fighting out the Second Surge of Covid-19 - the deadly virus, we need to do everything possible to support our country, our community and our family. The COVID-19 pandemic has been affecting people’s physical health, emotional health and financial health. The government has come up with various services/entitlements which will assist its citizen’s financial and physical health, however, lot of our citizens are not aware of these entitlements. 
 A group of organizations led by CYSD intend to support the citizens in resolving their physical, emotional and financial health issues through a virtual Citizen Support Centre, run by a team of care givers (professionals, expert counsellors and doctors) and digitally empowered 500 barefoot women volunteers for coming months. The key service activities includes:  <ul><li>Create awareness about various entitlements</li><li>Manage citizens’ query on entitlements</li><li>Spread awareness about government advisories to tackle Covid-19 pandemic</li><li>Manage socio-emotional health virtually through tele-counselling</li><li>Manage physical health virtually through tele medicine</li><li>Handholding support to local self-governments to reach out to most vulnerable families</li></ul>

Diminishing Citizenry Anxieties Elicited by COVID-19 Pandemic Second Surge

Rural Livelihood Training Centre of CYSD – a Green Skill School, based at Kapundi of Patna block in Keonjhar district of Odisha, continuously provides capacity building training to community members and stakeholders like rural/tribal farmers, CBOs, women SHGs, youth groups, and PRIs for around 2 decades. RLTC is a perfect demonstration and learning field lab for farmers and others on agro-forestry, farm forestry, mixed orchard, vegetable cultivation, SRI paddy, organic farm practices, pisciculture, mushroom cultivation, dairy and poultry, enterprise development and vocational /skill building training, especially for women and youth. Facilities of RLTC includes 4 well equipped halls (30-40 capacity), dormitory accommodation for participants, 4 resource persons’ rooms, bathrooms &amp; toilets, dining hall, kitchen, library and office-room. RLTC expends huge cost on electric energy consumption for running the lights, fans, computers and lifting water. However, electricity supply has become a continuous issue due to low voltage year round and unexpected load shedding during winter and summer. A new 10KW DG (zero-emission diesel generator) set is installed to provide backup energy without emitting carbon dioxide to the environment. However, RLTC being a cost centre, recurring expenses for fuel to run DG for 5-6 hours a day regularly exceeds the income of RLTC.    
 CYSD is committed towards addressing the climate change concerns. Taking into account the changing climatic impact and high operational cost involvement, CYSD intends to go for complete transition from use of electricity to use of renewable energy by installing a solar energy project. As the first measure, it has replaced all traditional bulbs, tube lights with LED bulbs, tube-lights and obsolete fans with new ones in all training halls, rooms and campus in 2018, even, replaced an age-old 10KW DG set last year which was consuming huge fuel energy and creating sound pollution.  Now, CYSD is exploring the possibility of setting up of at least a 5KW Solar Power Plant in RLTC in first phase, which can provide constant energy to light up the halls/rooms and lift water. This arrangement will help the resource persons to carry forward the sessions smoothly, trainee participants to revisit the topics covered and get prepared for next day sessions.  
 Once required resource for a 5KW Solar Power Plant is mobilized and plant is installed in RLTC campus, this will provide constant green and clean energy to light up all training halls, rooms, campus and lift water for consumption as well as farm demonstration purposes. Ultimately, sufficient light can help the resource persons to carry forward their sessions smoothly during day’s sessions, help trainee participants to revisit the topics covered; get prepared for next day sessions and feel at home in a luminous campus. The lifted water can be carefully used by the trainees for the purpose of drink, bathe and toilets. Apart, the demonstration farm plants will grow well so that a green campus can also be ensured. The proposed Solar Power Plan can serve as a Model in a tribal block of Patna. The trainee participants along with resource persons will have the opportunity in carry the best practices to respective locations as a result they can contribute a lot in addressing climate change concerns. More importantly, electricity supply  cost can be reduced drastically – by around 70%.

Green and Clean Light to Rural Livelihoods Training Centre

The COVID‐19 pandemic continues its impact in the life and livelihood of million population across all the sections. Its economic implications have largely impacted the working class, daily wage labourers and street vendors. More than one in 10 workers have lost their jobs in past 11 months owing to pandemic. No work, no pay. Uncertainty and vulnerability have crept into their daily life. In addition to upsetting the lives and livelihoods of millions of migrant workers, mostly daily wage earners, with minimal social security, the implications on the rural poor and marginalized sections with inadequate economic and social safety nets has become severe. During April-June thousands of migrant workers from Odisha have already entered to their native places. Many of them may go back to their workplace once the pandemic is over. However, a section of these returnee migrants, with no employment opportunities, will remain at their native places and will be a burden on the rural economy. CYSD is concerned about those migrants having no job option but aspiring to do Agri-allied entrepreneurship, like Mushroom growing, Honey-bee farming (Apiculture), organic manure production, poultry farming, dairy-farming, etc. if resources are available.  
 Skill Incubation Centre of CYSD provides Green Skill Training to rural youth, women entrepreneur and local business institution (Producer Group, SHG and Producer Company) based on local resource, market demand, existing experience and trade growth perspective. The Centre provides multifaceted business stimulating orientation including identification of Micro Enterprise Business Planning, Processing &amp; Value Addition of NTFP, Agri-horticulture Products, Credit Linkage, Trade Negotiation and Market linkage, Product Branding &amp; Packaging, Technology linkage and Post Training follow ups.Considering the pandemic impact and conducting a baseline in Agri-allied sector, CYSD has imparted Green Skill Training on Mushroom Cultivation to around 750 migrant labourers through Rural Livelihoods Training Centre (RLTC) based at Kapundi in Keonjhar district of Odisha. The catchment Blocks of RLTC - Kapundi caters to the needs of returnee migrants of Saharapada and Patna Blocks of the district.But, 275 registered migrants of two Blocks are aspiring to become “Honey Growers”. Thus, CYSD plans for offering Honey Cultivation training and capacity building to 60 migrants as honey entrepreneurs in Phase-I, depending upon resources available. RLTC is well equipped to accommodate 2 batches residential programmes at one go (9-days course following Government guidelines/modules). Participants will ‘learn by doing’ from demonstration sessions. 
 60 returnee migrants will have sustainable income – which will contribute to their quality life in a dignified manner. In first phase, 90 returnee migrants from Saharapada and Patna Blocks of Keonjhar district, who have shown their enthusiasm as “Honey Grower” will receive a 9-day intensive training and capacity building programme. Post to the training programme – learn-by-doing method - each trainee will receive a Honeybee Rearing Box with bee colonies. It is expected that from one box around 25-30 kg of honey can be extracted which has a market value of INR 12500 - 15000. The initial start-up support will help these returnee migrants enhance their base and grow as neo-entrepreneur by setting up more boxes of their own. These honey growers would be institutionalised as Farmers Producer Group to develop aggregate marketing and drudgery resilience. The honey cultivation would not only help returnee migrants employed but also increase the agriculture, horticulture and forest produce production rate through enhanced pollination by the honey bees
