“The abusers insert a candle or fingers in the vagina of children torture them. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. While Lalitha has also helped many women escape the clutches of being forced into sex work, the SPID is focused on rescuing children and giving them a better life.Sadly, many more children need to be rescued and need a loving home. Life for Aanya (name changed) used to be different. She was the 2nd oldest of five siblings, her father was a farmer and her mother a homemaker. While they definitely didn’t live a cushy life at first, they lived one of relative happiness. However, she unable to support the family, Aanya and her older sister had to now quit school and contribute towards household expenses. Life may have been difficult for Aanya but it was not unbearable. She had her family and that was all that mattered. Aanya (name changed) in Persian means dawn – the beginning of a new day. But every new day was one of loneliness for Aanya. She was separated from her family and betrayed by her friend who had sold her into sexual slavery many years ago. At first, every new day was one filled with horror and terror at the extent to which men would act to satisfy their cravings. But within a few weeks, every new day began with hopelessness, every day she would open her eyes and stare blankly at that damp patch in the corner of her ceiling. Her day was one of doomed resignation to the fact that there was no escape from this world of torment, abuse, and suffering. Every day was simply a cycle of survival. But her evil captor finally had justice delivered to him and Aanya was saved. Finding herself at the gates of CHAIIM, she knew she was where she belonged. Specially trained therapists helped her cope with her guilt and reconnected soul with body. Naturally bright, she took to CHAIIM's home management course with ease and now learns valuable life skills. She has reconnected with her family and is hopeful for the future.
