But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. Charlies Animal Rescue Centre – CARE established in January 2013, initially on half an acre of land adjacent to the picturesque Jakkur Lake, later moved to a larger place at Mitteganahalli, Yelahanka. The inspiration behind the trust, is 15 year old Charlie, a differently abled, 3 legged Indian Dog who was an established figure in the field of canine therapy since 2005. Charlie passed away in March, 2017, but has left behind a legacy that the CARE shelter aims to live up to through rescue and rehabilitation of animals in need.The Care Shelter is also home to animals of all kinds which includes dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, pigs, ducks and a calf. These animals are permanent residents of CARE due to their varying needs and special conditions – blindness, differently abled, paraplegic,serious ailments, aged and who require constant care, medical attention and love. These animals will live at CARE for the rest of their lives.

The CARE trauma centre successfully treated two dogs with tumor growths: A. Ronnie had a large tumor on his right hind leg that impaired his mobility. Radiographs showed that the tumor did not damage the bone. The tumor was removed and Ronnie recovered well after the surgery. He can now run and walk normally.B. Monty had a massive growth on his neck that prevented him from eating or drinking. A thorough examination of the tumor was done to assess its extent and malignancy. Biopsy results were negative. The surgery was challenging due to the location of the tumor, but Monty survived and healed well. He can now enjoy his food and run freely.

On an average, the CARE trauma centre receives 180-200 Accident cases of dogs every month, of that at least a 100 cases require intensive and critical care monitoring. These are dogs that have either undergone a major surgery and require dedicated post-operative care or dogs brought in to the facility in a very critical and fragile condition. All of them need to be monitored round the clock, oxygen levels, blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, etc. where fluctuations could even cause death.CARE's critical care support unit has the best available equipment that will maintain the condition of these animals on an hourly basis with dedicated and trained personnel to record the progress of the cases.The Unit has Oxygen Concentrators to maintain a continuous supply of oxygen , Patient Monitors for blood pressure, heart rate, oxygen levels, temperatureICU maintaining cages, specially designed that allows the equipment to be attached to the cage.And the best veterinary team in place.The most important factor is the number of critical CARE cases attended to and lives saved. 
 Each Inpatient admitted requiring critical care will be first administered emergency and immediate treatment include stabilization with IV fluids, pain management, wound care &amp; bleeding control and so on. This is followed by investigations for diagnosis like blood tests, x rays, ultrasound and so on. Once a diagnosis is made, the treatment required is initiated which includes medications and/or surgeries and long term housing until recovery. We do this for about 100 animals every month. Each case costs approximately a minimum of Rs 5000 for all the above. 
 With this project we can save the lives of over 3 animals per day, 100 animals per month and 1200 animals per year, who are critically ill or injured , fighting desperately for their lives.

On India Philanthropy Day, GIVE.DO is giving us matching funds for all donations that come in during a 24 hour period on July 19th. If we have one day to raise funds, what would we raise it for? The answer is very easy. We would do it for the medical treatment of street animals who come in grievously injured to our trauma care facility. CARE does not charge a mandatory fee to reporters admitting animals. In a majority of cases, the responsibility of raising funds for these animals is borne by CARE. Each case requires a minimum of Rs 3000/- to run all the basic diagnostic tests, initiate treatment depending on the condition, provide the animal nutritious food and shelter until he/she heals and are ready for release. There are a total number of 3,00,000 dogs in Bangalore as per the BBMP Census 2019. Given the numbers, it also means that the number of stray dogs suffering from injuries and illnesses, unattended on the street is also high. As validation to the fact, the CARE helpline receives over 200 calls a day. The current capacity of our treatment facility is for about 100. This gap in numbers, results in a back log that cases a subsequent delay in treatment and in some circumstances costing precious lives that could have been saved with timely treatment. 
 The approach at CARE to improve the lives of street animals is by running 2 helplines, 3 ambulances, a fully equipped trauma care unit, finding homes for some of them and sheltering those who have nowhere else to go. The need to establish CARE stemmed from the realisation that the existing healthcare facility for these nobody’s animals was inadequate. So the heart of our work has always been trauma care. The goal was to provide the best of veterinary services to all animals that come to our gates, irrespective of their ownership status and so the focus and emphasis remains on upgrading our trauma care facility. 
 Our Current Concern and Prerogative is to undertake capacity building, as we have all other resources but seem to be facing a space crunch. Hence, our goal is to expand our currently existing facility to circumvent this issue, where dogs die not due to the severity of their illness but mainly due to the delay in receiving treatment, which is a bigger tragedy that is entirely avoidable.To overcome this, we are looking at moving our existing isolation facilty to a newer location close to the main facility and make use of the vacated space to expand our trauma care and make room for more dogs. If we are able to raise funds to do this, we will be able to impact the lives of 200 dogs at any given point of time.We hope to stay true to our motto of no dog left behind, by pushing our boundaries, thereby inching closer to our goal of universal coverage for our city’s dogs.
