For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. But most people walk past them without a second glance. “Like this”, Dr. Bhagat explains, “many elders die on the roads.”Since 2003, SHEOWS (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) has rescued over 10,000 elderly people from the streets and given them a home with care and support. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. If the children don’t relent even then, the abusers put chilli powder so that children will say “yes” because of the burning of the skin… There are teeth marks on their bodies, and their vaginal parts are burnt. When children stay in these conditions, it is painful even to hear,” says Lalitha SA of the Society for Participatory Integrated Development (SPID), while talking about many heart-rending stories of trafficked children in red-light areas. In over three decades, the team of SPID led by Lalitha, has saved over 3000 children from the red-light areas in Delhi, such as GB Road, and many from clutches of sex trafficking. Charutar Arogya Mandal was set up in the year 1972 by the late Dr. HM Patel, India’s former Finance and Home Minister, to create an example of how the health-care needs of the rural community can be met. What has emerged over the years, is an institution that has created facilities and health-care infrastructure for a rural community that match with the best of those available to their urban counterparts and a network of educational institutions that graduate hundreds of health-care professionalsStarting with a small nursing school, the Mandal has added a host of educational institutions serving the field of medicine over the years, such as a Medical College, College of Physiotherapy, College of Nursing and an Institute of Medical Lab Technology. For patient care, its flagship Shree Krishna Hospital serves as Charotar’s largest and most well-equipped health-care facility. Since October 2019, all these institutions created by the Mandal have converged into the Bhaikaka University, a private University approved by the Govt. of Gujarat.From its humble origin as a 136-bed facility 39 years ago, the teaching hospital (Shree Krishna Hospital) managed by the Charutar Arogya Mandal has grown to a 1000-bed NABH accredited hospital today, which, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities renders professional services. It has been able to serve the community and live up to the credo, "Solace for the Suffering", envisioned by its founder Chairman. This has been made possible mainly due to the generous support of Trusts, Foundations and Donors who have assisted the growth of the institution at every stage and sound governance.Today, the hospital is considered one of the most well equipped rural health-care centres in Gujarat, with facilities such as Cardiac Centre, state-of-the-art Cancer Centre with 2 Linear Accelerators for radiotherapy, Bone Marrow Transplant, Trauma Centre, 160 ICU beds (which include the 120-bed Critical Care Centre), 34-bed Dialysis Centre, 21 Operation Theatres, NABL accredited labs including a Molecular Lab, NABH accredited Blood bank, Diagnostics facility including a 3 Tesla MRI machine &amp; CT-Scan, and a 24x7 Pharmacy, all located in a lush green 100 acre campus.Supporting the CommunityWhat defines the Mandal today, however, is not its infrastructure or its facilities. Over 5,05,000 patients who come to the hospital annually for outdoor consultations, largely from the villages around, over 56,600 in-patients admitted to its various indoor services, and over 11,000 patients who undergo surgeries at the Hospital, experience health-care as it was always meant to be; humane, rational, efficient and affordable. As a policy: “Those who are indigent and not in a position to pay for their treatment are not turned away just because they cannot afford treatment costs”. They are provided uniform quality treatment alongwith those who can afford it. To make health-care affordable, for outdoor consultations, we offer free registration and medical advice. Under our Aashirwad services aimed to provide affordable health-care to the needy and indigent families, we offer to registered members at a nominal annual fees of Rs. 250 for a 4 member family, free in-patient services in 600 Aashirwad ward beds such as free stay, food, doctors/nurses' services, ward services, X-ray, Sonography, lab investigations &amp; surgery. For this we have introduced the Aashirwad app where indigent families could get registered and automatically qualify to avail Aashirwad services. These registered members admitted in ICU could get up to 50% concession in investigation costs and would otherwise have to bear only the pharmacy costs. As the patients in this category bear the cost of pharmacy alone in the case of surgeries also, we have optimized those costs too.In addition, the Mandal collaborates with the Government for schemes such as Ayushman Bharat, &amp; Mukhyamantri Amrutam (MA) Yojana. However, the reimbursement obtained under government schemes covers a small part of the overall treatment cost in most procedures. In addition, health-care services provided by us at the Secondary Health-care facility at Sevaliya and four extension centres also bring succour to the needy.The annual burden to the Mandal towards concessions and free-ships given to patients amounts to more than Rs. 35 crores annually mainly covering needy patients with Cancer, Cardiac diseases, malnourished women undergoing complicated deliveries, prematurely born &amp; underweight neonates and accident victims. Many of the patients treated here would not have pursued treatment for their life-threatening ailments, had they not been supported by the Mandal and many Donors.

"Cancer" The word carries not only dread, but a certain finality to it. Those suffering from it often believe they are doomed. Charotar, where the Charutar Arogya Mandal’s institutions are located, has a long history of tobacco growing. Thus, it is not surprising that the region has a high incidence of oral cancers as well.Anand and Kheda districts of Gujarat are tobacco producing areas, and as a result, tobacco is not only produced in large quantities, but is also consumed through various means in large quantities. Hence, the Mandal established the M.S. Patel Cancer Centre, a state-of-the-art facility with Radiation &amp; Medical Oncology services in the year 2004. The Centre which was funded by Sir Dorabji Tata Trust was started with facilities for radiation and medical oncology, two Linear Accelerator, CT Simulation, 3-D Treatment Planning System, Image Guided Brachytherapy for Radiation and a full fledged Day Care Facility for the Chemotherapy. Since its inauguration by Shri Ratan Tata, the Centre has, over the last 19 years, earned the goodwill not only of the local community but also remote areas of the State.The Centre, with its modern facilities and a compassionate team of clinical and para-clinical staff as well as social workers, is proving to be one of the best options available for the treatment of cancer across the state. The M.S. Patel Cancer Centre is registered on the National Cancer Grid, which is a distinction and a recognition of the extensive work being done at the Centre. Last year, the Centre of the hospital had 37000 admissions out of which around 2500 patients required Chemotherapy cycles and around 4500 patients were put on Radiation therapy and 411 onco surgery of which around 2100 were new patients.The hospital's Cancer Centre receives patients not only Gujarat but also from States like Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. These patients largely belong to the less privileged section of society. Needy and economically less privileged families who are barely able to make the two ends meet with their meagre incomes first draw down their own savings and liquidate assets to meet treatment costs. Borrowings and financial aid from various communities, groups and friends, family and the state would be the next resort. Despite this, many people have to discontinue treatment, unable to bear the financial burden.Charutar Arogya Mandal could treat more such cancer patients and provide more concessions to poor and less privileged families, if there was a source of fund available for concessions.  Support treatment of poor patients suffering from cancer

The Mandal’s Cancer Initiative:Anand and Kheda districts of Gujarat are tobacco producing areas, and as a result, tobacco is not only produced in large quantities, but is also consumed through various means in large quantities. This, together with the fact that cancer is a disease that can be cured if diagnosed early, had prompted Charutar Arogya Mandal to initiate its cancer education, awareness and early detection programmes in over 900 villages in 1999 in collaboration with the Tribhuvandas Foundation, an NGO working in maternal and infant care. The Mandal, through the project period of 10 years, has trained village health workers of Tribhuvandas Foundation in educating the community regarding cancer and benefits of early detection. These workers have also been trained in diagnosing early symptoms of cancer so that they can send those they suspect to Shree Krishna Hospital for further examination. Through its continuing extension activities in over 150 villages of Anand, Kheda and Panchmahal districts under the TATA Trusts sponsored Programme for NCDs, their efforts have continued and have been intensified. When the Project was first launched in 1999, the increasing number of cancer cases being detected led to the realisation that there had to be diagnostic and treatment facilities within the hospital that matched the best in the field. At the time, there was no facility available for treatment of cancer except in Ahmedabad. Needy and economically less privileged families who are barely able to make the two ends meet with their meagre incomes first draw down their own savings and liquidate assets to meet treatment costs. Borrowings and financial aid from various communities, groups and friends, family and the state would be the next resort. Despite this, many people have to discontinue treatment, unable to bear the financial burden. This puts them through the grappling experience of having to helplessly watch a loved one painfully inch towards death. This is where donors and donor organizations could step in to save a precious life and prevent the family from falling into a abyss of debt which could last for over a generation in some cases. 
 Manibhai Shivabhai Patel Cancer Centre at Charutar Arogya MandalIn the backdrop as explained above, the Mandal established the M.S. Patel Cancer Centre, a state-of-the-art facility with Radiation &amp; Medical Oncology services in the year 2004. The Centre which was funded by Sir Dorabji Tata Trust was started with facilities for radiation and medical oncology, two Linear Accelerator, CT Simulation, 3-D Treatment Planning System, Image Guided Brachytherapy for Radiation and a full fledged Day Care Facility for the Chemotherapy. Since its inauguration by Shri Ratan Tata, the Centre has, over the last 16 years, earned the goodwill not only of the local community but also remote areas of the State.As a result of increasing workload at the Centre over these years, and in view of the complexities of the cases received, it was necessary to add to the facilities for the radiation oncology. This was achieved with the installation of a new Linear Accelerator received with fund support from the Tata Trusts and having distinct features such as Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT), and Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT). Considering the growing requirement for Bone Marrow Transplant procedures for blood cancers and other blood disorders such as thalassemia, the Bone Marrow Transplant facility was added in 2015 to the Cancer Centre, completing the array of Oncology services at the Hospital. Taking into account the increased inflow of patients, one more advanced Linear Accelerator was added in 2017. To enhance diagnostic capabilities, a 3 Tesla MRI machine was installed in May 2018, which enables early detection of tumours, stones and growths. The old Brachytherapy machine was replaced by a new one of Varian make in August 2020. 
 The Centre, with its modern facilities and a compassionate team of clinical and para-clinical staff as well as social workers, is proving to be one of the best options available for the treatment of cancer across the state. The M.S. Patel Cancer Centre is registered on the National Cancer Grid, which is a distinction and a recognition of the extensive work being done at the Centre. Last year, the Centre of the hospital had 36097 admissions out of which around 3200 patients required Chemotherapy cycles and 4000 patients were put on Radiation therapy and 545 onco surgery of which 2200 are new patients.Though the Centre is functional in the Anand and Kheda districts of Gujarat, it has registered patients not only from various districts of Gujarat but also from other states which include MP, Rajasthan and UP. The Centre has been receiving patients from all strata of society, out of which there are many who would not have pursued the expensive treatment of cancer, had the Mandal and the donors not supported them financially. The Centre, with the most modern technology and a range of experienced and compassionate experts and cancer caregivers has evolved as a shelter to numerous needy victims of the disease.
