For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. But most people walk past them without a second glance. “Like this”, Dr. Bhagat explains, “many elders die on the roads.”Since 2003, SHEOWS (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) has rescued over 10,000 elderly people from the streets and given them a home with care and support. I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. Right to Girl Child Education

The issue of Child MarriageThe legal age for marriage in India is 18 years for girls and 21 years for boys. Breaking this law is punishable but that does not stop child marriage from being rampant across the country even in this day and age. Although child marriage affects both boys and girls, in most cases, it is the girl children that are affected the most. Child marriage denies children their basic rights to good health, nutrition, education, and freedom from violence, abuse and exploitation. According to the 2011 census, there are close to 15 million girls who are married before the legal age every year. 
 Through our programmes, we try to sensitise communities in villages towards the ill effects of child marriage on a regular basis. Additionally, we constantly work with the panchayat, influential government officials and most importantly, parents to encourage girl children to go to school. With our efforts, we try to rewire mindsets to create a sustainable long term change.With the help of partners and our well-wishers, we have managed to stop the practice of child marriage in 206 villages and slums last year.  In Banispur village (Bihar), most girls who leave their school after Class VIII, are also forced to leave their childhood behind. As an unsaid norm that most families follow, looking for a groom for a girl child begins as soon as she crosses 13 years of age. Along with the noise of these forced wedding celebrations in Banispur, one can also hear a soft yet hopeful voice that says, “Main acchi doctor banna chahti hu”. This is the voice of Julie Kumari. Julie was studying in Class IX when she overheard her father talking about getting her married to someone soon. Juile was devastated. She didn’t want to imagine a day of her life without going to school as she still had a lot left to learn. Knowing she had a difficult battle ahead of her, one that surely can’t be fought alone, she reached out to CRY’s on ground project partner. This decision that Julie took ended up changing a lot of girls’ lives in her village. Fortunately, CRY’s partner had already initiated a children’s group in the village called the Munna - Munni Manch. Their staff immediately got involved and a series of discussions later, to Julie’s relief, the wedding was finally called off. But her battle wasn’t over, all her relatives and the entire village demanded for answers from her parents as they went against the tide. To everyone’s surprise, the person who single handedly answered every question was Julie’s mother. Thanks to the capacity building sessions with CRY, Julie’s mother had also gained the confidence to fight for her daughter. Her confidence or faith didn’t falter till the very end. Today, just like Julie, two other girls have also decided to continue their studies after Class VIII. Julie continues to be an inspiration for girls in the village as she’s the only one in the village who has started going to college. Despite staying 2 hours away, she never misses a day to college. Each day, she feels she’s getting closer to her dream of becoming a doctor.

CRY- Child Rights &amp; You is taking a step forward in bringing a seismic change and creating happier childhoods. Today, nearly:-- 56% of adolescent girls (15-19 years) in India are anaemic- Nearly 45% of girls In India get married before the age of 18 years - Roughly 50% of all working children are girls - School dropout rate amongst adolescent girls in India is 63.5% - Of all reported cases of sexual abuse in India, 14.2% girls experienced the first incidence of sexual violence between the ages 15 to 19 years, 4.8% were abused first between the age of 10 to 15 years and 0.4% between the age of 0 to 10 yearsWe aim to change the above statistics and facilitate safe, secure and stronger childhoods. 
 CRY-Child Rights &amp; You has taken a forward step to support the Girl Child Education by initiating a Fund Raiser Challenge open for college students who would generously want to contribute towards this cause. Approximately, 3,61,612 girl children across CRY-supported projects are soaring high, realizing their full potential. CRY has magnificently completed its 4 decades of creating a positive impact in the lives of children across India. 
 This year is the 40th year we aim in touching maximum lives and providing children with their basic rights which they are deprived of even today.

Fundraising Challenge with CRY

COVID-19 has severely impacted the learning process for many children for whom education already meant a lot more than their basic right. With education systems adopting the online approach, many children from suffering backgrounds find it difficult to continue their learning process. CRY wishes to impact 32,580 children from grade 8 to 12 across 181 village clusters, who are at the risk of succumbing to child labour. Your contribution of ₹1,000 will go a long way in ensuring essential teaching aid materials like digital tablets for these students.Closure of 1.5 million schools due to the Coronavirus pandemic and the resultant lockdowns has impacted 247 million children enrolled in elementary and secondary schools in India (UNICEF).The pandemic has kept children out of school for the last 16 months thus creating all kinds of hurdles in their aspirations to complete their school education. The loss of livelihoods and the growing financial pressure has made children extremely vulnerable to child labour. The primary data collected by our on-ground team from a sample of households in CRY’s operational areas in 18 states shows that last year alone there has been an 82% increase in child labour.Additionally, due to the absence of digital devices, school children are losing touch with their school subjects and the habit of structured learning. This will have severe implications on children when schools reopen and they have to go back to school eventually. Inability to cope with their studies will lead to dropout and increased child labour.This is the time to intervene and ensure that children get back to lessons in a structured setting and help them make up for the crucial lost time in their education. The absence of an intervention such as this will result in learning deficits for a significant number of children which will become difficult to overcome. 
 <ul><li>The programme will be run using Digital Tablets which will be given to qualified teachers to conduct classes for children in the village</li><li>Each teacher’s study session will be attended by a group of children from the same village and also some children from nearby villages</li><li>If schools reopen in the coming months, these study sessions will be continued to supplement the school teaching and help ease children back into the routine of school</li><li>The content of the sessions will be linked to the standard-specific curriculum and lessons of the relevant State syllabus </li></ul> 
 The programme will run for 8 months across 181 village clusters impacting a total of 32,580 children from Std VI to Std XII who are at the risk of becoming child labourers. By ensuring children have continued access to school despite the closure of schools, children will be protected from child labour and permanent discontinuation of school and thus from the inescapable cycle of poverty.
