BACKGROUND AND CONTEXT:In the wake of the Covid-19 Pandemic in the month of January 2020 it is very obvious to pronounce that the year 2020 has been one of the most bizarre and catastrophic years in the history of mankind. It had severely affected the way we live and breathe hereafter. Life will never be the same again Post Covid-19. The worst hit are the economies world over. The economic fall out of this dreadful Covid-19 Virus is disastrous to say the least, No one has ever predicted the scale and magnitude of the monumental human and economic loss and negative impact of the Corona induced National Lock downs observed globally. Job loss is the most severe immediate impact of COVID-19 crisis while lower economic growth and rise in inequality would be the long-term effects, according to a survey by the Indian Society of Labour Economics (ISLE). The online survey was conducted on 520 ISLE members in the last week of May.The preliminary results showed that loss of employment was considered as the most severe immediate impact of the crisis while lower economic growth and rise in inequality were probable long-term.As per the survey, the immediate policy priorities suggested were protection of workers and families, short-term employment creation and income transfers to affected workers-Economic Times,11 July 2020.The immediate and pressing task on hand for our nation is short term job creation. This has been necessitated not just by job losses but also displacement of work force on account of migrants leaving their jobs and migrating back to their home states.The urgency of the situation is is further reinforced by the fact that even before the arrival of Covid-19 Pandemic number of job seekers registered with employment exchanges in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are 31 lakh of which a dismal 57 per cent (18 lakh) do not have any skills.There is a common misconception that unemployment rates can be attributed only to the lack of employment opportunities. While it remains a primary cause, ‘Lack of Skill’ among educated and uneducated youth is also seen as a daunting problem in our economy. It is further worsened by an educational environment that focuses more on development with regard to academic prowess rather than on honing specific skills in students. In order to address the lack of skill the following points needs to be taken into consideration.Of the current work force in these states it is estimated that 86% of the total work force remains unskilled. According to this NSDC Report during the period of 2012-22 the incremental demand supply gap of manpower in across all sectors is expected to be 36.7 laks with excess of demand for skilled and semi-skilled work force and excess supply of minimally skilled work force.Skills and knowledge are the driving forces of economic growth and social development of any country. The economy becomes more productive, innovative and competitive through the existence of more skilled human potential. The level of employment, its composition and the growth in employment opportunities are the critical indicators of the process of development in any economy. Increasing pace of globalization and technological changes provide both challenges and growing opportunities for economic expansion and job creation. In taking advantage of these opportunities as well as in minimizing the social costs and dislocation, which the transition to a more open economy entails, the level and quality of skills that a nation possess are becoming critical factors. Countries with higher and better levels of skills adjust more effectively to the challenges and opportunities of globalization.CHORD’s Intervention in the Skill Development sector and Mandate FY 2020-21In the last Ten years despite overwhelming odds of serving at the grassroots and crippling daily setbacks and challenges CHORD had trained and provided sustainable livelihood opportunity over 7000 young people in the short-term employable trades it had mastered over the years.Having gained invaluable expertise over the years and having put together a committed work force and decent network at the grassroots CHORD proposes to train another 500 unemployed youth/displaced/migrants in the year 2020-21 with same commitment and dedication with the sole aim of nudging disadvantaged communities towards progress and prosperity500 Youth will be trained in skills and placed in Telangana and AP state under this project

The pandemic has affected children from marginalised tribes, especially girls, who are unable to get access to education in Telangana. CHORD is providing education and dry ration to 500 Vulnerable Girl children belonging to Scheduled Caste / Scheduled Tribes and or Backward classes, minority communities (and their families), identified and rescued from streets, rural peripherals and slums in collaboration with the Departments of Labor, Police, and Education, of Government of Telangana. The status of the girl child is the key to achieving women’s equality and dignity which is, in many ways, a litmus test of the maturity of a society. Girls are to be the future mothers, besides future policy makers and leaders. Jawaharlal Nehru once said “To awaken the people it is the women who should be awakened first. Once she is on the move the family moves …the Nation moves”.Current Status of Girl Child in India<ul><li>Sex ratio in the 0-6 Years age group has fallen to an all-time low of 914 girls to 1000 boys</li><li>One in three girls die in the first year of life and one in four do not live to celebrate their fifteenth birthday</li><li> Two out of five girls are malnourished and every second adolescent girl is anemic</li><li> Six out of ten girls are child brides and four out of ten have their first child before they are 18 years old</li><li>vIndia ranks 113 out of 135 countries as per World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report 2011</li><li>With more than one-third of its population below 18 years, India has the largest young population in the world.</li><li>Only 35% of births is registered, impacting name and nationality.</li><li>One out of 16 children die before they attain the age of 1, and one out of 11 die before they are 5 years old.</li><li> 35% of the developing world’s low-birth-weight babies are born in India.</li><li> 40% of child malnutrition in the developing world sin India.</li><li> Out of every 100 children, 19 continue to be out of school.</li><li> Of every 100 children who enroll, 70 drop out by the time they reach the secondary level.</li><li>Of every 100 children who drop out of school, 66 are girls.</li><li>65% of girls in India are married by the age of 18 and become mothers soon after.</li><li> India is home to the highest number of child laborers in the world. India has the world’s largest number of sexually abused children, with a child below 16 raped every 155th minute, a child below 10 every 13th hour, and at least one in every 10 children sexually abused at any point in time.</li><li> According to UNDP Human Development Report (2014), on educational indicators a measure of how many years of schooling a child is expected to receive, if prevailing enrollment patterns continue. India’s average is 11.7. The world average is 12.2 years, while the developed countries average 16.3 years. Among the BRICS countries, India's average is the least. Currently, Indians of 25 years or more have received just 4.4 years of schooling on average, compared to a global average of 7.7 years.</li><li> HDR 2014 introduces a gender development index (GDI) for the first time, which measures gender development gaps among 148 countries. While the overall gender gap is an 8% deficit for women, the income gap is shockingly high — per capita income for men is more than double that of women.</li></ul>

A girl child needs to be affirmed repeatedly that she is priceless. Parents, care-givers, governments and the society at large owe her these responsibilities.Goal:Educate and empower Girl child for sustainable Education, Health, Livelihoods, Life skills and Leadership from among the urban under privileged community by promoting bridge schools, regular girl’s community neighborhood schools and skill training centers.CHORD strives to rescue, educate and empower 500 working Girl children every year through their bridge schools, formal schools and skill training centers in Hyderabad surrounding districts Telangana, India. The challenge is to break the cyclic life pattern of working and school dropout children in the slums through innovative remedial school education program developed by the organization that takes the child to its logical end through formal and vocational education. The program provides a holistic and flexible learning opportunity to children and also lays emphasis on supporting children in their early adulthood stage and strives to empower the students by making up for lost education and rebuilding a learning foundation, integrating the child into main stream education and enabling the child toward a sturdy development plan through guidance and care.CHORD are currently is running a bridge schools that cater to the educational needs of 500 urban deprived and slum girl children.Field facts of this concept           <ul><li> About 500 girl children will be the direct beneficiary of the project and 500 families will be indirectly benefitted during the course of the project.</li><li>Our target group are urban under privileged families and girl children from those families. The girl children are always busy for homestead work with their mothers to learn the basics of homestead work.</li><li> The mother is interested to engage her daughter in homestead work, rather than their education.</li><li>The maximum girls are engaged in homestead work at slums in the target areas of operation where CHORD has been trying to mitigate the gender based educational disparities.</li><li> The girl children are migrated from their villages by the family force, and lack of food, cloths, entertainment and also effect of Urbanization. The migrated family is being settled in slums with family because they are victim of displacement etc. They are living in the small houses looking for job opportunity in slums.</li><li> The child labour, particularly, girls are regularly socially, physically, mentally tortured by their profiteer/employer.</li><li> Real empowerment of the girl child is only possible through education. Low levels of educational attainment coupled with familial and social neglect has inhibited their growth potential.</li><li>Variation in literacy of male and female is evident. Girls are still deprived of primary education, due to several factors such as inaccessibility of primary education, household duties, early marriage, early girl child bearing, gender bias associated drudgery, other socio-cultural factors such as parents’ perception, that education is more beneficial for sons.</li><li>A large proportion of school age girls remain outside the school system due to important factors explained largely by low access of females to education system in the traditional value system play a greater premium on male than the female.</li><li>Since resources are scarce, parents decide to send boys to school in preference to girls.</li><li>Acute poverty has proved to be a barrier to girls’ education.</li></ul>EDUCATION DURING COVID-19 TIMES:DIGITAL /ONLINE EDUCATION SYSTEM FOR THE ACADEMIC YEAR-2021-22We have adopted Hybrid model of education (Online and Offline) since April 2020 to ensure that the girls’ educational momentum is not curtailed and they continue to receive the fruits of learning that will propel them towards a brighter future. End Hunger- Feed The Project

Child labour is on the rise due to poverty, inequality, illiteracy, parental apathy and lack of government policies which makes families desperate for whatever meagre salary a child can obtain. According to statistics, 62% of child labour is stimulated by parents of impoverished families. India has the highest number of child labourers in the world, a 12.4 million and the state of Telangana has 0.60 million working children. Ranga Reddy District has 47170 children employed. In urban RR District, Telangana, just three municipalities Balanagar, Serilingampally and Qutbullapur employ 8965 children as per our survey. This number however does not include domestic child workers. If domestic children are included this number will be more than double as per an unofficial estimate. 
 Chord follows a rehabilitation process to turn these child labourers into productive citizens of society. To begin with, we conduct survey to identify the areas where child labourers are abundant followed by rescuing and motivating them about the importance of education. We focus on remedial classes for these children along with teacher recruitment, training and curriculum development. By encouraging them to participate in extracurricular activities, we transform their personalities completely. All our efforts bear fruit when we are able to mainstream them. To get them successfully enrolled in formal schools is our ultimate motive. 
 The benefits arising out of our program covers not only the children but also their families and the society as a whole. We produce 420 first generation literates every year. These children are motivated to pursue high school education. This plays an immense role in curbing trafficking of children into bonded labour /domestic labour and flesh trade. It also provides dignity and identity to socially oppressed and under privileged children. Ultimately, the community is sensitized about the importance of formal education.

Help provide formal school education for child labourers

Across India, 90 percent of its workforce is from the informal labor sector. As per the 2017-2018 survey of the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), there are 37.4 million home-based workers in India. Post Covid-19, the mode of gainful employment has undergone significant changes, especially within the informal sector. Domestic work, street vending, construction work are trades where physical presence at the workplace is paramount, in the absence of which wages cannot be earned. The luxury of working from home and maintaining physical distancing is not the perks of informal work. Only specific forms of work such as garment manufacturing, stitching, embroidery, beedi rollers allow informal workers to work from home. But often such informal workers are housed in informal settlements with poor basic infrastructure services, and live-in poor health and hygienic conditions which adds to their existing socio-economic problems. Hyderabad’s largest slums placed at the heart of the city are like monumental reminders of the alarming state of urban poverty in growing cities. The overly populated slums due to spontaneous migration and urban congestion house a large number of people comprising of various communities, majorly representing SC/ST/BC and minority communities. Most of the people in these slums barely make any money as they are seasonal construction workers, domestic workers, laborers, and work odd jobs. Women especially living in these pathetic conditions depend on menial jobs like domestic servants and seasonal unskilled construction workers. So, CHORD has come up with a community development project that focuses on rescuing and educating child laborers and training vulnerable women towards sustainable livelihood opportunities.  
 CHORD plans to provide immediate relief and also initiate urgent financial support and sourcing the modes for income generation for the community members. We propose the following verticals Relief and Rehabilitation:As a part of early relief, CHORD plans to provide monthly Food ration kits and care kits. There are pregnant women, aged members, and children categories, hence based on the family-based checklist, CHORD plans to organize the distribution of the family-wise food ration kits. We have realized that Covid-19 has devastated the lives of the poor and the marginalized. As such the migrant laborers desperately need food and care kits support for at least twelve months until their lives are rebuilt and they readapt to alternate livelihoods and normalcy is restored to the economy. On the basis of our decade-old engagement with slum communities, we have chosen families predominantly representing migrant families to reach out with twelve months requirement of Dry ration kits and care kits to sustain their families. Re-adaptation:As a part of the sustenance planning, CHORD proposes to distribute means for earning (MFE) tools such as sewing machines, ironing boxes, and pushcarts for immediate livelihoods generation. The rapidly changing needs for skills due to the COVID-19 crisis and recession made it difficult to adapt to market trends. So, we are laying immense focus on immediate alternate sources of livelihood for the community members as it is also the felt need of the community members. With the backend support of CHORD for supply chain needs and also a source for work contracts for the individual home-based entrepreneurs, we plan to distribute sewing machines to the slum community women trained as tailors in CHORD skill centers and also plan to distribute ironing boxes, Street vending carts, sanitizer sprays, home plumbing tool kits, and electrical work tool kits.Re-Building lives through Skill-Based TrainingBased on the Post Covid-19 situations, CHORD has made a field assessment and also plans to work on re-building the lives of community members with a focus on alternate and immediate replaceable skills for employment/self-employment. We have also observed that real-time tracking of health, food, and livelihood conditions re-building support is necessary for the poor. The focus of this step is to bring intrinsic growth and development in the slums of Hyderabad through a multi-pronged approach - economically empowering women, providing remedial education for children, and sensitizing the entire community on issues like gender equity, child rights, women empowerment, etc. The goal set is not about a one-dimensional change that manages to metered measured targets but to change the intrinsic nature, the cyclic pattern of family poverty and children being forced into labor by widening the periphery of gain and transforming the very factor that triggers poverty and a labor relapse in children i.e., Parents and Community. CHORD believes that it would be very effective to Re-Build the lives of the newly affected Post Covid families and especially vulnerable women through skill-based training and empowerment. 
 The outreach of this program would cover a wide array of backward communities that are usually rare recipients of development opportunities and aid. The fisherman community, dhobi community, barber community, scavenger community, agricultural laborers, landless laborers, slum dwellers, backward Sikh communities in urban pockets, and the weaver community would be benefitted through this initiative as we plan to distribute ration kits, tools for means for earning (MFE), create free access to employable skill training in job-oriented courses in the short term and ensure sustainable employment for vulnerable women through skill-based training, counseling.
