“Preeti (name changed) was just six when she was brought to Mumbai and only nine when she was sold into Kamathipura’s red-light area. We rescued her a few years later, but by then, she had already endured unimaginable trauma. Her stories broke my heart. This is a fast-growing business because unlike anything else, a human being can be sold over and over again. It is alarming and heart-wrenching,” Aaboo shares.But no matter how daunting the task might be Aaboo has made it his life mission to see the fight against human trafficking till the end. Living in a hell on earth“The abuse young girls face in red-light areas is beyond comprehension,” Aaboo shares. “These young girls are robbed of their innocence and their childhood. Traffickers beat them with rods, burn them, and mutilate their private parts just to break them. Children are kept in separate apartments where multiple men abuse them and get addicted to substances”, Aaboo says. Through his NGO Purnata, Aaboo is on a mission not just to rescue the victims from red-light areas but also to rehabilitate them and give them a fresh start in life. To date, he has saved 85 children and 60 women from red-light areas, but for him, the job is far from over. The extent of the struggles here was beyond my imagination. These villages had no connectivity to the outside world, and very limited access to healthcare and quality education”, says Bipin Dhane, founder of the school. Bipin, who grew up in the small town of Satara in Maharashtra, faced countless financial hardships. Despite his struggles, Bipin secured admission to the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, and then went on to take up a job in Singapore. Owing to his childhood experiences Bipin was always inclined towards helping the less fortunate, and he believed in the transformative power of education. It was in 2016 that Bipin left his lucrative career abroad and moved to Majuli, to provide the children from this inaccessible river island education they were deprived of.“Whatever little money I had saved, I gave it to my parents. I had no money to start the school. It was then that villagers came together to build bamboo huts. Each family donated bamboo, wood, and whatever little they could. Shishur Sevay is a non-institutional care for orphan girls, some with disabilities, all of whom have been rejected for adoption. We are demonstrating that, given safety opportunities and support, these children can succeed and thrive just like children born into better circumstances. We are also pioneers in inclusive technologies. Two of our girls with Cerebral Palsy use the Tobii eye-tracking device to communicate. The older girls who grew up at Shishur Sevay wanted to give back the love and care they had received growing up, and to take care of the children in need. This led to the foundation of Children's Smart Centre (CSC), a free, inclusive, community playschool, dedicated to providing Early Childhood Care and Education to the underprivileged children in the community.
