I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. For 11-year-old Ravi (name changed) a normal day would start before the sun rose and involved carrying heavy loads up a narrow staircase, in a ramshackle building filled with clouds of toxic smoke. The slum population in Karnataka mainly comprises of the migrant population who are settled in the city for more than 5-10 years. They feed large families and survive with earning even less than Rs 250 per day. With the given set of living conditions and abject poverty of these slum dwellers, providing them holistic and quality education is of paramount importance. The development of the child needs to be viewed in a more integrated fashion - hence the need for nutrition and healthcare are vital components that needs to be addressed. Education is the single largest opportunity for the impoverished children to break the cycle of poverty. 
 Christel House’s quality education program provides access to good health care, wholesome nutrition and a caring environment. We try to ensure that we admit the poorest of the poor - the average monthly income of the community admitted with us is below Rs. 7,500/- per month with an average of 5 members in the family. The Learning Centre provides children free, rigorous academic education, which stresses on competencies in English, Math, Science, Computer and basic skills. The students have access to two dedicated counsellors from Kindergarten to Grade 12. We help children achieve success by providing vocational training and mentor them until they are integrated into work and society. 
 Our model creates a “multiplier effect” as, once the cycle of poverty is broken, future generations benefit continuously. Our students overcome all odds to stay in school, graduate, continue their studies and gain employment. The commitment we have towards the students can be 20 years or more – from kindergarten till job placements. In this process, they gain the abilities and skills to contribute towards the society. The pandemic has inflicted socio-economic crisis onto the families of over 1000 children from Christel House schools, with their parents losing their daily waged jobs and not having means to even provide for food for the family. In ₹1,207 per kit we shall distribute COVID-19 Relief Kit to the families of 699 students from urban slums in Bangalore and 377 students from rural villages of Atal Nagar to keep them out of hunger and provide them with nourishment and security. The crisis induced by the COVID-19 pandemic has had an adverse impact on the marginalized and low-income families, that make up all of Christel House's parents' groups and target communities. Our students come from extremely impoverished homes, and majority of their parents work in the unorganized sector as daily wagers. With the restrictions imposed due to the pandemic, many of them lost their livelihood and were on the brink of starvation, as they did not have enough earnings and means that would enable them to have access to food and other essentials. 
 During these unprecedented crisis, we believe that supporting each other is crucial, now more than ever. Therefore, even though the Christel House schools in India were temporarily closed, we have been distributing monthly 'Relief Kits' containing packages of groceries, soaps and face masks to the families of Christel House students and also to the out-of-work migrant labourers (in the lockdown period) in the neighbourhood during these times of crisis. So far, we distributed over 21,500 Food Relief Kits benefiting the poor families in distress due to the pandemic. Since the pandemic is still unfolding in India, we are continuing our efforts to feed the families of Christel House students with Food Relief Kits.We would like to continue supporting 699 children from urban slums in Bangalore and 377 students from rural villages of Atal Nagar with COVID-19 Relief Kits worth ₹1,207 each to keep them out of hunger and miseries. Each relief kit would comprise of rice, pulses, atta, ragi, salt, chilly powder, turmeric powder, soaps, face masks and cooking oil. 
 Since the lockdown March 2020, our students have not been receiving their regular nutritious meals (breakfast, lunch and evening snack and milk) that is provided to the students while in school. The Food Support program through distribution of Relief kits is of paramount importance in keeping them safe &amp; nourished, improves their attendance, helps them stay focused on attending their online classes, and will reduce school dropouts etc.Through the timely distribution of groceries, Christel House is able to promote the health and well-being of our students, their families and the impoverished community dwellers by providing essential nutrition, which increases their immunity levels.The houses in the slum communities of India are very closely packed with no proper sanitization, people from these communities seldom have access to proper water and barely follow any hygiene practices. In such closely packed communities, social distancing is not often followed. By distributing face masks and soaps, the community spread of COVID-19 among such vulnerable communities can be eliminated to an extent.
