The Christian Medical College Vellore is a charitable society aiming for excellence and compassion in medical education, services and research, modeling itself on the healing ministry of Jesus Christ. Founded in 1900, it is now a 3,000-bed multi-speciality teaching hospital operating on five campuses and serving people from India and the sub-continent. Daily outpatient appointments exceed 8,000. Every day around 50 babies are born, 158 operations and more than 30,000 laboratory tests are performed. CMC aims to promote health and wholeness in individuals and communities with a special concern for the disabled, marginalized and vulnerable. Economically disadvantaged patients are given concessionary or free treatment. Outreach programmes cover urban and rural communities and target bpl families. On International Women’s day, we pay tribute to our inspiring founder Dr. Ida Scudder. She dedicated her life to the women and children of South India. She broke stereotypes, graduating in the first batch of women doctors at Cornell, USA. When a medical school for Indian women seemed next to impossible, she overcame tremendous challenges and inspired young women (and later men) to serve with excellence and dedication.In 1922, Dr. Ida championed ‘Dollar Day’ asking one million people to give one dollar each to build the Women’s Medical College at Vellore. Person to Person – You Bridge the Gap

Everyday more than a thousand patients arrive at CMC desperately seeking medical help but unable to pay for it. Our Founder, Dr. Ida Sophia Scudder, started work in Vellore in 1900. 120 years later, her one-bed clinic has grown into a medical college with hospitals on seven campuses. She taught us to care for anyone who knocks at our door. We try to welcome anyone in need, even if they can't afford to pay for their treatment. 
 Our patients come from all over India. Most of them are financially challenged after spending their life's savings on travel and accommodation to stay Vellore. To help patients like them, CMC’s hospital free bed scheme treats disadvantaged patients free of cost. Everything is covered: bed, nursing, doctor’s fee, lab tests, operation charges and medicines. 
 In December 1922, Dr. Ida Scudder needed funds to build the Women's Medical College in Vellor. Her team that supported her in the US, launched ‘Dollar Day’, asking 1 million people to give $1 to build CMC! Thousands of students, housewives and ordinary people contributed to ‘Dollar Day’. They raised half their target by what we now call crowd funding. The rest was kindly given by an eighty-year-old lady, Ms. Ellen Scripps, and the Rockefeller Foundation. In 2020, CMC marks 120 years of healing. 120 years of caring for those who can’t afford good healthcare. But we need your help. Just like the Dollar Day, we are asking our friends and well-wishers to give something, however small, towards the CMC2020 campaign. You can be a part of this campaign and make a difference for another person! Can you give Rs.200, Rs.2,000 or Rs.20,000? Every paise will go to our Hospital Free Bed Scheme, bringing hope and healing to the needy.

CAN you help? My wife has cancer, but I have no money. Bhani* had severe pain in her stomach and she was bleeding from time to time. Her worried husband brought her to a nearby hospital in West Bengal where he was advised to take her straight to CMC Vellore.He was a compounder but had lost his job during the lockdown. The couple leased their land, borrowed money and travelled to Vellore. They had high hopes for healing ... until they heard the diagnosis: She had Cancer! <blockquote>“This is a big disease!” he said, “I had just enough money to treat a small issue and go back home”. </blockquote>Bhani looked frail and weak. Her husband told the doctors that he would take her home, where she could pass away in peace with her children around her. He had given up on life.This is just one story. Everyday we see hundreds of distressed families like Bhani and her husband. They travel many miles to CMC Vellore, hoping for relief. 
 We CAN Help! CMC doctors convinced the couple to stay. "Bhani is only 37, and has a life to live! The cancer is treatable. She can beat it!" Her husband agreed when they promised to help.CMC's charity grants covered a huge part of the treatment and medicine costs for Bhani. We want all our patients have the treatment they need. Though she looks a little weak, Bhani is responding well to the treatment. Cancer Care Relief Fund

Heart conditions, diabetes, asthma and other chronic diseases are most common amongst the elderly. Studies show that more than one in ten Indians over the age of 50 have diabetes. Often people living with these diseases must take regular medicines over a long period of time. These drugs can be essential for their health and long term well-being. Stopping taking your diabetes medicine increases the risk of stroke, and damage your eyes, heart and kidneys. It can end up in the amputation of a foot because of bad circulation. But the cost of medicines is a big drain on their income. When people living on the margins don't have enough money to eat properly the first expense they can save on is their medicines. 
 We want to provide economically disadvantaged patients with chronic diseases up to Rs.500 per month for essential medicines prescribed by our doctors. Target group will a) have a very low family income (reported as below Rs.5,000 per individual per month), b) need regular medications. Priority will be given to the elderly and those with disabilities. We will not give them the cash, but provide it as a credit at the hospital pharmacy. The patients will bring their prescriptions to the Public Relations Officer, who will a) assess their economic need, b) scrutinise the prescription and c) arrange for the credit at the Pharmacy against their hospital number. Most of these people will need this assistance on a regular basis. This scheme can be operated at minimal cost to the hospital, if the cost of the medicines can be funded. Expected number of beneficiaries 800 to 900 each month. 
 This scheme will remove one of the key reasons why people don't take important medicines, as instructed by their doctors. Amongst this group of vulnerable individuals, this will reduce the chance of preventable crises such as sugar levels out of control, dangerously high blood pressure, severe asthma attack, auto immune diseases flaring up etc. This may save lives and limbs. It should help to improve and preserve the individual's quality of life and save them money on emergency treatment.
