I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. One of them is V Dhanushya, 18, who is studying nursing. “Thaiamma has taken care of me since I was six months old. She promised the mother that she would take care of the baby. “The baby hardly had any strength. She used to be called ‘insect’ by the people in the neighbourhood. The doctor said that she might not survive beyond a month. But she did for over a year, under my care. I named her Shakthi,” recalls Vanitha.Sharanalayam has come a long way since that time, with hundreds of children being taken care of by the NGO in the last two decades. Additionally attention-harvesting techniques of social and gaming platforms lead children to deeply problematic mental health challenges including screen & pornography addiction, isolation, body dysmorphia, ADHD, violence, self-harm and suicidal tendencies etc. CDF’s Good Tech Squad has worked with Trivandrum International School among others to understand the key problems faced by children and create awareness among them. CDF also educates students, parents and educators to interact mindfully and critically with new technologies instead of trusting them blindly.

With the rapid development of AI, non consensual deepfakes, misinformation and exacerbation of gender, caste, class and religious bias in education, employment, healthcare and welfare systems are on the rise. The impact of these issues end up amplifying existing social inequities and further harm minorities and the marginalised.
