For a mother who has spent her entire life loving and raising her child, being beaten and mercilessly thrown out onto the streets by her own son is too heartbreaking to overcome. But this is a common story among the elderly residents of the Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram. “I’ve seen mothers in old and torn clothes, their bodies smelling and their hands and feet rotting and covered in maggots,” shares Dr. G.P. Bhagat, founder of the ashram. These abandoned elderly men and women lay starving on the streets hoping for someone to rescue them from their suffering. But most people walk past them without a second glance. “Like this”, Dr. Bhagat explains, “many elders die on the roads.”Since 2003, SHEOWS (Saint Hardyal Educational and Orphans Welfare Society) has rescued over 10,000 elderly people from the streets and given them a home with care and support. The Guru Vishram Vridh Ashram has a dedicated rescue team that saves the elderly from the streets and gives them immediate medical care upon their arrival at the home. To tend to the multiple health complications of the seniors, the home has a medical facility with doctors and nurses, a physiotherapy unit, a pathology lab, a digital X-ray monitoring machine and a pharmacy to provide 24-hour care to older adults anytime they require assistance, even during emergencies. We are the Clownselors - a motley group of volunteers who use humour to expedite the healing process of patients. What we do is termed as 'Medical Clowning' - a practice that has been proven by research to have a significant and positive impact on the ailing, while also providing relief to caretakers and guardians. This therapy works not only for patients but also in workplaces where employees are stressed and help in building better bonds with colleagues. Since 2016, we've been dressing up as clowns and using dance, play, music and drama as therapy at Hospitals, Schools and workplaces. We have conducted sessions at hospitals including Chacha Nehru Bal Chikitsalaya, Inderprastha Apollo Hospital, SRCC Hospital (Mumbai), Dharamshila Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, Kalavati Saran Children's Hospital, GTB Hospital, Moti Nagar Hospital, NEIGRIHMS, Bethany Hospital (Meghalaya), Jindal Hospital, and the like. We also conduct 'clownseling' sessions at old age homes, homes for the mentally ill, refugee camps, special schools and orphanages in Delhi and other parts of India.

Kashmiri’s prolonged exposure to conflict has resulted in widespread trauma. According to a 2016 study by Médecins Sans Frontières, 45% of Kashmir’s population suffers from some form of mental distress, with 26% showing symptoms of severe depression and 19% experiencing anxiety-related disorders. Therapeutic clowning is an innovative approach that uses humor and empathy to provide emotional relief and build resilience in communities facing trauma and stress. In Kashmir, the need for mental health support is critical. Our program aims to train school and college students, and community workers, in therapeutic clowning to promote healing, mental well-being, and community cohesion
