“We received a distress call saying that a blind girl is being held captive by a woman and is being forced to beg. Our volunteers were able to rescue that girl and bring her to the Blind Welfare Society home for girls. We cared for her and educated her. Today that girl is a senior government official”, says Asha Bhola, President, Blind Welfare Society (BWS) as she recalls how her organisation has been able to transform lives.BWS has been a ray of hope for 40 such blind girls, many of whom have been abandoned by their families owing to their visual impairment. Sadly, the care, shelter and education for blind girls come at a cost, and BWS is unable to keep its work going. According to the nonprofit office bearer, “Many parents neglect their blind daughters and at times even sell them off for begging, etc. Even if the girl is from a well-to-do family, they feel providing education and care to a blind girl is a waste of money”. “What is the fault of an innocent child?”, she asks.Education, the only hope “These girls have no future without education. If they don’t receive education, they will remain uncared for. They will continue to be ignored by not just their families but even by society at large. Whatever I am today is only because of the education I received. But sadly, every blind girl is not as fortunate. “The major problem in society today is the stigma against mentally ill or mentally disabled people. Families feed and care for men who are mentally ill and keep them at home. But no one wants to help women with mental illnesses,” says N Vanitha Rengaraj, chairperson of Sharanalayam.Sharanalaym’s ‘Jothi’ is a sanctuary for over 100 women facing mental challenges. Cochlea Pune for Hearing and Speech (Cochlea Pune) is a NGO working for the rehabilitation of congenital hearing impaired children between the age group of 00 to 6 years. In the year 1998, Cochlea Pune was started by Dr. Avinash M. Wachasundar an ENT surgeon and Mrs.Raksha Deshpande a Master in Arts (Psychology) and a Diploma in Deaf Education, with one teacher and one Student. In the year 2000, it was registered with the Office of the Charity Commissioner, Pune.According to medical statistics, out of every 1000 babies born, 4 babies are born deaf. If early detection and early intervention of these children is not done (between the age group of 00 to 6 years), these children will remain Hearing Impaired for their whole life, and, they will not be able to live a normal life and will be a burden to the family and to the society at large and consequently to the nation.In Pune, around 60000 deliveries take place every year, so, considering the above statistics, 240 babies are born Hearing Impaired. That is to say, there will be almost 1400 Hearing Impaired children in the preschool age of 00 – 06 at any given time in Pune city. It is worth noting that, currently, we are rendering these services to 150 children (In Pune) only, such is the severity and need of rehabilitating congenital hearing-impaired children. By rehabilitating these children, we can help them to lead a normal life. It is worth mentioning that all the services required (ENT Surgeon’s consultation, audiological evaluation, hearing aids, speech training) are availed under one roof. All the Hearing-Impaired children coming to us regularly are integrated to normal schools. We are proud to inform you that no other NGO is giving such services under one roof, and, the results that we give. Cochlea Pune focuses on early detection and early intervention of congenital deaf children at various places in the Pune district, and, has a full-fledged rehabilitation centre with two ENT surgeons, audiologists, RCI qualified Speech Therapist and 40 teachers and also has a well-equipped audiological testing room with latest equipment. Every year, on achieving good language and speech, approximately 15 to 20 students integrate to normal schools. In the last academic year our students who were integrated to normal schools passed their SSC and HSC exams with above 80% marks.In the year 2019, Pune Municipal Corporation has allocated us space at their Bindu Madhav Thakre Hospital, Kothrud to start a Rehabilitation centre as a joint venture with them. Since June 2019, ‘Swaranaad Multi-Dimensional Comprehensive Development Centre for Hearing Impaired Children’ is functioning from the above hospital premises. Currently, we have about 104 students in our rehabilitation centre.At the above centre, detection of hearing-impaired children between the age group of 00 to 06 years is done, and, following activities are carried out.<ul><li>·       ENT Examination is done of Hearing-Impaired children</li><li>·       Speech Therapy for Hearing Impaired children</li><li>·       Speech Therapy for Cochlear Implant children</li><li>·       Brain Stem Evoked Response Audiometry (BERA)</li><li>·       Oto Acoustic Emission (OAE)</li><li>·       Pure Tone Audiometry</li><li>·       Impedance Audiometry</li><li>·       Psychological Evaluation</li><li>·       Ear Moulds</li><li>·       Fitment of appropriate hearing aid</li><li>·       Parents Counselling</li></ul>To help us with all the above activities we have a team of two ENT surgeons, a qualified audiologist, 40 speech therapists qualified from the Rehabilitation of India and support staff.  All the above is carried out in Child centric therapy rooms and a fully equipped and furnished audiology room.For the last academic year, we had 104 children who regularly attended the therapy sessions daily. We are proud to inform you that, 16 children i.e., 100% of who completed 6 years of age, and have taken therapy and who have now attained good speech and language were integrated to normal schools. Radical progress is seen in these children after attaining speech and language.

That is to say, there will be almost 4800 Hearing Impaired children in the preschool age of 00 – 06 at any given time in Pune city. Such is the severity and need of rehabilitating congenital hearOther issues that the project will address:<ul><li>·       Lack of awareness about the issues of deafness among the urban and rural communities that the project works with</li><li>·       Prevailing misconceptions about sign language especially in the slum communities and rural areas of Pune</li><li>·       Gap between the hearing impaired and hearing communities</li><li>·       Lack of right pedagogy and teaching resources which are specially customized to the needs of the hearing impaired in India.</li></ul> 
 <ul><li>Cochlea Pune works with 150 children with hearing impairment from Pune, focuses on early detection and early intervention of congenitally deaf children at various places in the Pune district, and, has a full-fledged rehabilitation centre with a complete team and has a well-equipped audiological testing room with the latest equipment.</li><li>Training for the mothers is conducted. Once the child is able to listen and speak relatively well, he/ she is integrated into formal school. Cochlea also runs an early detection centre that provides professional therapeutic courses and runs free rural and tribal detention camps for the children. The teachers and  Principal have prepared a syllabus for the children who attend the School. The strength of the project is there are qualified teachers are trained to teach hearing-impaired children.</li><li> Due to this speech and language, these children get integrated into normal school in the First standard and thus overcome their disability permanently.</li></ul>10 different Rehabilitation centres with activities such as<ul><li>Preschool Training, Speech Therapy for Hearing Impaired children,</li><li>Developing reading and writing skills, Physical Training, Play Therapy, Parents Counseling, and Awareness of Hearing aid techniques.</li><li>The organization runs a diploma course DECSE (HI), recognized by the Rehabilitation Council of India               </li></ul> 
 <ul><li>After early detection &amp; intervention of hearing-impaired children with impairment can be treated as a normal hearing human beings by the community. After acquiring adequate speech and language these children get integrated into normal school in the first standard and thus overcome their disability permanently. If early detection and early intervention of these children is done (between the age group of 0 to 6 years) these children will speak normally. They will be able to live a normal life and won’t be a burden to the family, the society and the nation at a large. The hearing-impaired children would be made ready to be integrated into normal schools and consequently lead a normal life.</li><li>Rehabilitation in hearing impairment will open new and various avenues like job, business, Sports, Politics etc.</li><li>Acceptance of hearing-impaired children by the community so as these children can connect to society.</li><li>These Children will be in a better position to get a job opportunity after their formal / Professional education.</li><li>Awareness about Hearing impairment plays a vital role in initiating the rehabilitation of hearing-impaired children.</li><li>These children can be role models for other HI children.</li><li>The rehabilitated person is easily accepted for a marriage proposal.</li></ul>
