I was filled with anguish and resolved to do something,” says Girish Kulkarni who has made it his life’s mission to rescue children from red light areas and give them a safe and secure childhood. In the last 3 decades Girish has saved over 1100 girls from a life of abuse in red-light areas, giving them a loving home, education and medical care. I had even seen my friend’s 15-year-old sister and 70-year-old grandmother being forced to do sex work for the price of a cup of tea”, recalls Girish. “I started by merely feeding and teaching children of sex workers initially with the intention of giving them some respite from the horrors of life of abuse in red-light areas. For 11-year-old Ravi (name changed) a normal day would start before the sun rose and involved carrying heavy loads up a narrow staircase, in a ramshackle building filled with clouds of toxic smoke. And work rarely ended before nine or ten at night. “The fumes in the stone-polishing factory were such that I would choke and feel suffocated all day long. There was a time when I fell from the first floor and had I not caught onto the railing, I am not sure what would have happened. Community Seva Centre is a social service organization serving the poorest of the poor in the villages of Ariyankuppam Commune in Pondicherry UT and Kalvarayan hills in TamilNadu since 1993, covering nearly 64 surrounding villages. We are working towards child development from womb to teenage, covering immunization, nutrition, breast feeding, pre-natal and post-natal care given to mother and child. CSC is running pre-schools for the development of children below 5 yrs of age and 18 Rajiv Gandhi National Creche Scheme ( Supported by Central welfare board) pre-schools in Pondy.Kalvarayan Hills programs includes Seva Nursery &amp; Primary School, Seva children's home, Seva high school, Seva Matriculation school, and Elders' Home. School going children are supported with supplementary education in night study centre, and summer camps, extra curricular activities, exposure trips, counseling, career guidance, vocational training, sports materials etc have been provided to teenagers to shape their future as they deserve. Women are given awareness on health care, kitchen gardening, and economic empowerment through self-help groups. Nearly 320 SHG's are running under community centre in all the 3 regions and women are being linked to banks and markets.Community Seva Centre is serving the community by serving the people who are in need. The action plan, the hurdles faced, the achievements, the future plans are being reviewed in this annual report. The end of the year will give new hopes and new responsibilities. But at the same time, past experience are very important for any organization, and they shall be treasured.

Seeking help for the School education of the Tribal children

Education facilities in the hilly regions are not good enough. Though there are a lot of private schools in the area, most of the villagers can’t afford their high fees. - A number of qualified youths/teachers are not available for tuition or night study centres in the villages.- Most of the girl children help their mothers in household work and take care of their siblings, and boys help the families by grazing the cattle in the field, which supports family earning in a small way.- Parents often migrate from their living places to do menial jobs. - People are not aware of the importance of education, as they have never had access to proper education themselves. To address this issue, CSC has established matriculation schools in the hills for the benefit of tribal children. We used to run our schools with the help of sponsorship and donations. In Puluvappaadi, we have Seva Matriculation School, with affiliation from LKG to 8th standard with a strength of 170 students. At present, we run this school through loans and corpus fund. As we are fast running out of funds, we are seeking monetary help so that we can keep helping tribal children get a good education. 
 Community Seva Centre (CSC) is a non-governmental organization established in the year 1993, located at Pooranankuppam, Pudhucherry union territory, on the south-eastern coast of India. It is registered under the Indian society act of 1860. We are running many of our projects in Kalvarayan hills of Villupuram district for the tribal people of the hills. The Kalvarayan hills are located on the Eastern Ghats range of Eastern coast and situated south-east to Salem in the Villupuram District of Tamil Nadu.We want to present the concept of empowering tribal children of Kalavarayan hills of Villupuram district to continue their schooling, as these are the first generation school goers in the tribal community of the hills area. We would, first, present the present problem in the community that debars the children from availing education.Since 1993, Community Seva Centre has continuously extended its activities and fields of expertise. In addition to our established programs in the Pondicherry union territory, and the Tsunami affected villages of Karaikal region, Community Seva Centre steadily expanded the services for the interior tribes of Kalvarayan Hills in Tamil Nadu. 
 The children will be relieved from drudgery and illiteracy. About 20 villages consisting of 1200 tribal families will be motivated for children’s schooling. Drop-out rate of tribal children will be reduced. More girl children in the tribal community will be sent to primary school. This project will be able to address the issues of primary education, health and social environment of tribal children with a social integration component of their family. It is the first generation education project for the tribal community. The first generation effort for education will continue without stop.

We used to run our schools with help of sponsorship. In Puluvappadi, we have Seva Matriculation School, with approval from LKG to 8th standard. 170 students are studying in the school. At present, we run this school through loans and corpus fund. As we are fast running out of funds, we seek funds to run this school without cease to benefit first generation tribal children to continue their studies. The tribal families and parents being below poverty line cannot afford to provide basic amenities and education for their children. They remain illiterate for all time and roam in the forests.Therefore it has been proposed to adapt a minimum of 200 most needy tribal children and take care of their educational requirement, including food and clothing and transport and other needs, so that they can complete their primary education without awaiting the family backup which is not existent in practice. 
 Identification of most needy tribal families and their children .One children will be taken up per family with emphasis on tribal girl child.Motivation of parents through village meetings to send the children to the school.Motivation of children through village animators to organize and guide them beyond school hour. Provision of educational material, school uniform, school bags and shoes for the tribal children. Provision of intermediary health check up and minimum medicinal support for the school going children.Organizing children’s fair for the tribal children in the villages. Organizing annual sports and cultural activities for the tribal children. Fallow up of the children to the upper primary school after their pass out from class VIII of Middle school.
